The Texas Rangers will pay Eric Gagne a base salary of $6 million and up to $5 million more in incentives based on games finished. They were satisfied with Akinori Otsuka (32 saves in 36 opportunities) in the closer role, however, and the immediate plan is to have Gagne pitch primarily in the eighth inning.
    Interesting.

At first I was pissed at this signing, because I thought it would mean they would flip Otsuka off to another team, taking a HUGE risk with Gagne as your only closer.

However, it seems like they will keep Aki and have him and Gagne doing the 8th-9th inning thing, which I like. A 1-yr, incentive-laden contract for someone who could be lights out again is a good risk as long as you have a backup plan, which it seems like the Rangers do.

I feel much better about Washington's men running the pitching staff than I have about any other manager and coaches in recent years. They may get some decent pitching yet

No, that was already predetermined. As soon as Buck got fired, the Rangers were assured of 92 wins and a ring.

He's not hurt, he just hasn't had the innings yet to throw him into the fire of the 9th inning in a close game. They plan on getting him some innings and bringing him off of the DL on 4/13.

the other day he pitched an inning gave up like 7 hits 5 runs or something like that.

Hes reverted to the Gagne the starter

Although, if he can build up the innings and get back CLOSE to form, then thats all the Rangers need.

The starting pitching on the other hand..........

yeah, he's going to come in and throw lights out in spring training when he hasn't pitched anything meaningful in 2 years due to injury. Sure.

    I don't believe I said that.

But hes not coming back as sharp as i thought.

Not lights out, but not 5 runs in an inning.
