in a normal fight yes but in the nba brawl Melo may have realised then that he shouldnt have gone in hot headed coz he would get suspended. So he made sure he didnt make it worse

If I remember correctly, Kermit Washington wasn't suspended any particular amount of games, but was out for the rest of the season.

I think that's accurate. Another way to view it is if Robinson doesn't get involved, the end result is just a lot of jawing between Smith and Collins.
They showed some of the postgame press conferences, but I never did see the actual brawl on NBATV (I was flipping channels though).

Yeah, but then you might not even HAVE suspensions. Robinson's actions by themselves would have warranted a suspension. Smith's action escalated it further.
I think players should be suspended for what they do, not for what other players do or how fights escalate. Case in point, I thought Ben Wallace got screwed last year when he was suspended 6 games for a flagrant foul just because Jackson/Artest/O'Neil went bat .

I don't understand your point. Smith is supposed to just let Robinson shove him mutliple times? Yeah, it's nice if he would have been cool enough to just walk away, but if you do something that can be expected to generate some sort of retaliation (e.g., commit a flagrant foul), then you bear some of the responsibility for that retaliation.
And I completely disagree. Wallace bears some culpability. What a weak-minded thing to do. It was already calming down, and could have been the standard procedure after a flagrant foul, but he tries to get in a punch as if he was still 12 years old in the head on the court of a schoolyard.
