Settle on a range, not a specific number. Ask, don't demand.
Some are hardliners on salary, but bennies are up for negotiation.

Yes, they are. I actually took a small salary cut so that I could start with 3 weeks vacation. Only my boss knows, because I spread out taking my 15 days. I don't think I've taken more than 3 or 4 days at a shot, because I combine with holidays whenever possible. F'rinstance, over Christmas, I'm taking 3 days, combined with 3 holiday days and 2 weekends to total 10 days. People with seniority to me are still waiting to hit 5 years to get that 3rd week, but I thought "Bull , I've been in the workforce for 20+ years. I'm not going back to 2 weeks". If you don't ask, you won't get, though. The worst they can do for any bennie request (if you are polite) is to say "no". Someone at my last job tipped me to this, albeit too late for that job. You have to request these things before you accept the offer....bennies are up for negotiation.

Do you have added skills or quals above and beyond those required by the position? If so, that might give you a bargaining chip. What sort of job is it?
I'd start with a salary 10-15% abovew what you'd be happy with and negotiate them to the middle.

xcoriate - yeah, you're right in a way. However, the job market is so tight right now that in most professions employers can't cut conditions or they'll be unable to find staff. People in jobs like retail are getting screwed though. The key is get yourself a profession, whether it be a trade or something white collar, and you'll generally do okay.

I hope it went well !!! Just in case you haven't already gone though, remember to keep it in your mind that you are worth every penny you are asking for. It makes it a whole lot easier to ask for more more money that way. They can sense if your shooting for the moon but not sure you're worth it.

As for the negotiating tips, my advice is to shoot for the moon. You already have the job, right? Assuming they wouldn't fire you on the spot for not simply caving to their every provision, there's no harm in starting high and letting them be the ones to try to talk you down.
