    Ivory Coast seethes after attack
Anti-French feeling runs high in loyalist parts of Ivory Coast after France hits back over the deaths of nine peacekeepers.

Armed mobs of government loyalists have taken to the streets of Ivory Coast's main city, Abidjan, in an outpouring of anger against France.

Rioters attacked a French school and army base as Paris moved to disable the country's small air force following an air attack on its peacekeeping force.

Nine French soldiers were killed along with a US citizen when Ivorian planes bombed a rebel stronghold in the north.

France then destroyed two bombers at an airbase in the capital, Yamoussoukro.

In addition to the two Russian-built Sukhoi 25, three Mi-24 helicopters were destroyed, the French military said.

Paris has dispatched an extra two companies of troops to beef up a force of 4,000 already deployed since the end of the civil war last year, and has also redeployed three jet fighters to the region.

The UN Security Council is discussing events at an emergency meeting.

The BBC's world affairs correspondent, Mark Doyle, says this is the most serious crisis between France and its former colony since independence in 1960.

Ivory Coast was for many years a tolerant melting pot of religions and ethnic groups, but a coup in 1999 followed by civil war ended all of that with a vengeance, our correspondent says.

    'French go home!'

Unconfirmed reports speak of explosions and heavy gunfire in Yamoussoukro on Saturday evening.
The earlier attack on its airport ignited anti-French feeling in Abidjan - a much bigger city - where mobs loyal to President Laurent Gbagbo went on the rampage.

Brandishing axes, machetes and clubs, they roamed the streets shouting "French go home!" and "Everybody get your Frenchman!" as French property was looted.

At Abidjan's airport, French and Ivorian forces exchanged shots and a French military plane was reportedly damaged.

Troops guarding a French base in the city fired tear gas at a crowd protesting at the destruction of the Ivorian planes and a French secondary school was also set alight

President Gbagbo has appealed through a spokesman for an end to attacks on French interests pending an investigation into Saturday's events.

    Extra troops

A statement from the presidential palace in Paris said that two extra military companies were being sent to Ivory Coast to boost the French force there.

President Jacques Chirac ordered the "immediate destruction of Ivorian military aircraft used in recent days in violation of the ceasefire".

Such action, the French statement said, was authorised by the United Nations mandate covering France's peacekeepers in Ivory Coast.
France also redeployed three Mirage jets, usually based in Chad, and a supply plane to Gabon, closer to Ivory Coast.

French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said her country held Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo "personally responsible" for public order in his country.

At least one Ivorian Sukhoi 25 bomber attacked a position of France's Unicorn peacekeeping force in the rebel stronghold of Bouake at 1300 local time (1300 GMT) on Saturday.

Eight French soldiers were killed immediately along with an American, believed to have been a missionary, while 23 soldiers were injured and evacuated to Abidjan. A ninth soldier later died of his wounds.

At about 1415, French forces launched on the attack on the aircraft on the ground at Yamoussoukro.

Without giving details of the airport attack, the defence ministry said the army had "responded in a situation of legitimate defence" and was seeking "the immediate end of combat".

The African Union has urged both the government and rebels to refrain from any further violations of the truce they signed last year after a bitter civil war which split the country.

These kind of is why I have a very hard time believing Kerry supporters are smarter than Bush supporters.

Kerry suporters universally want to suck french and terrorist ...

Yet what they fail to realize, Chiraq is 1000 times more conservative than Bush. He's also much more corrupt.

And what all the dumbass conspiracy theorists fail to realize...all the conspiracies involving 911 operate under the premise of the Bush administration attempting to create a Presidential Democracy(a democratic government where the President weilds almost total authority)...

    Guess what...that's what France is.

Also, regardless of the peacekeeper status of the french, countries generally keep a military base or two in countries they have occupied. (see: Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, South Korea, Japan, etc.)

Also, regardless of the peacekeeper status of the french, countries generally keep a military base or two in countries they have occupied. (see: Germany - they should of thought about that before they declared war on us, Saudi Arabia - at the behest of both the UN and the Saudi Government for various reasons, Kuwait - ditto, South Korea - been paying much attention? We are removing our troops and their government is begging us not to do so, Japan - See Germany, etc.)

So basically, if Koffi sends them in, even if they are hostile to the government in power, it's ok right? Why? How is that any different then what we have done in Iraq?...Koffi's got the UN all over Africa, doesn't look like they are doing good to me.

This is actually the whole reason why the french are there to stop such a bombing, regardless of if any french soldiers were killed or not. Both the loyalists and the rebels, after much fighting went to the UN to ask for help, they set up a cease fire, then brokered an agreement between the two sides to permenantly stop the violence, then sent in peacekeepers (of which the french are part) to enforce the ceasefire. France's actions were backed by the UN security council, of which our good ol' U.S. of A. is a part of, so even your boy Jr. agrees.

Now, some differences between what they are doing there and what we are doing in Iraq. We were not asked by anyone since shortly after the gulf war to come into Iraq. Definitely not by both sides. The last party to ask for our help was the Kurds, but since we had the No Fly Zones they had no need for our ground support, as they were pretty autonomous. We do not have the mandate of the UN, and we have 1, maybe 2 if your stretching it, major allies.

One last thing, the reason why Kofi has the UN all over Africa, is because africa has a lot of civil wars, and various other "hot spots."

You really need to follow this more closely...they have been in the Ivory Coast for a while, actually they are ing around in a lot of countries where they aren't wanted...that's why they would never be able to help us militarily in Iraq, that's why John Kerry was an idiot when he said he could get them to help us and why they said um no we won't...

I can't belive you guys trust ChiraQ and Anan more than our own government. Why?

    These guys are ing corrupt.

Everything you guys think Bush is guilty of? Chiraq is guilty of.

This is why it's so hilarious when I hear liberals saying they are going to move to France. You get the worst of both worlds, ChiraQ is as conservative as Bush, he's a hardcore Roman Catholic, and France's population and industry is largely socialist. These people that think they can run to France are ing ignorant of what is going on over there, France still had the draft up until 3 years ago.

LMAO this is ing great stuff, it's not based in reality but it's still great to read lol.

LMAO. Since when do liberals approve of military action in Civil Wars? Isn't that what you guys raised about in Vietnam? LOL. Gotta love it. Just admit it...you like the UN and France better than the US, you think those guys are more honest. And nothing is going to convince you otherwise.

You're wrong of course, but you just might as well admit what you really mean. You are also wrong if you think these guys have any insight into how to fight a war or keep peace, the only successful peace keeping missions they have ever had were our military.

What the does French involvement in a former colony have to do with Iraq or the war on terrorism? Seems to me that you have fallen for the right-wing spin on France and Chirac, line-hook-and-sinker. If you can't bring anything better than this STFU.

Right wing? It's fact, it's not freaking right wing...the right is being too soft on Chiraq. You never seen this crap in the US even on CNN...Bush is being too soft on Chiraq...Chiraq has him by the freaking balls because we still need French intelligence in the mideast and he can't rip him a new one like he wants too. I mean why do you think Bush never brought up the fact that we are bringing indictments against UN officials during those debates? And Chiraq's stance is totally motivated by greed and political opportunism. The only thing Chiraq is doing right in the eyes of his people his hating America...and he's doing it only because he is so unpopular in his own country.

I'm not saying Bushad is corrupt...I'm saying it's accused of being corrupt...Chiraq is corrupt..he's been nailed and as soon as he loses office he will probably be prosecuted in cases in which several felony convictions have already been handed out. He's been found taking bribes, giving bribes, civil abuse and vote rigging...The only reason his ass isn't in jail right now is because of a law they passed granting him immunity while he is the President.

And all governments are corrupt to an extent..but the USA has privatized industry and is one of the most transparent governments in the world, it also has one of the most vicious medias in the world, Franceh as state controlled media the President wields a ton of power and their major industry is also state run..a huge difference there...the evidence against the Bush administration, for the worst things they are accused of, is both cir stantial and ignorant.

Put it this way...there's no country anywhere near as big as the USA that has as clean a government as we do. Yeah it's corrupt to an extent and you are fool if you think you will ever have a governement totally free of corruption.

The French are looking after their own interests, and well as the worlds interest by keeping forces on the Ivory Coast. This isn't political opportunism, nor a Bush Jihad.

Privatization does not equal transparency. Especially when corporations basically own the politicians that are supposed to be looking after the public's best interest. No where is that more evident than in Iraq and Halliburton.

Thank you. ing Thank You. Now you know why Kerry and Liberals are idiots. Smarter indeed...

France is looking out for it's own interests. That's exactly what it's doing, and so is Chiraq and why the you think they should be given any say in what's our best interest...as Kerry wanted...is beyond me.

LOL this is great, you guys are totally defending this...priceless, the double standard on clear display by the liberals participating in this thread.

You guys are anti-American and you are pro-Europe and pro-UN. That's the truth.

And you ing wonder why we didn't let ya'll get control of the country.

Why should we be? We wouldn't want to be foreign occupiers beating the crap out of a poor country.

The UN ed up...Not only am I not in favor of ever supporting any of their efforts anywhere again....I personally am in favor of stopping all dues paid to them and kicking their ing butts out our country...they are now a subversive corrupt organization.

Unfortunately they turned down an offer to move to Canada...you want to know why? Because they are without our aid and connections to us...but that doesn't stop them from stealing billions on the side in the Oil for Death program.

Are you drunk or stoned? Every country looks out for it's own best interest. Why should the French be any different? That doesn't mean that they are plotting against the U.S. or George Bush though.

As always, your looking for much more in what is being posted, even to the point of manipulating the topic into insanity.
