Butch Davis has been fired as coach of the Cleveland Browns, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting.
Davis, whose teams went 24-36 overall in three-plus seasons, met with team owner Randy Lerner on Monday night and was told of the decision, according to Mortensen.
There has been no decision on a replacement, but Mortensen is reporting that Lerner intends to meet with a group of Browns players to discuss who will be selected as the interim coach. Offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie and defensive coordinator Dave Campo are the leading candidates to take over as the interim coach for the rest of the season.
The Browns (3-8) are in last place in the AFC North and have lost five consecutive games.
Last week, Browns president John Collins insisted Cleveland would not make any coaching changes during the season -- unless Davis resigned. But that stance changed after a 58-48 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and the Monday night meeting with Lerner.
There has been speculation that Davis, who had three years remaining on a contract worth approximately $12 million, will pursue a high-profile college job. One newspaper report said there is mutual interest between Davis and the University of Florida. Davis coached at the University of Miami before joining the Browns in 2001.
The Browns made the AFC playoffs as a wild-card team with a 9-7 record in 2002, Davis' second second in Cleveland. But the team followed that up with a 5-11 record in 2003 and has struggled through an injury-filled 2004.
Quarterback Jeff Garcia, signed as a free agent in March, has struggled while learning the new offense and has had to cope with the team losing several key starters to injuries, including rookie tight end Kellen Winslow Jr.

Didn't the Browns run the west coast offense? Jeff Garcia should've known that offense since he played at SF.
What offense do the Browns run?
It's probably similiar to the one Norv Turner ran in Dallas. Not only was Butch the defensive coordinator at Dallas during the Jimmy Johnson era, but his O coordinator was the O coordinator of the Redskins during Norv Turners days.
