    ESPN.com It looked like it would never happen. All the Padres needed was a victory over the Dodgers on Thursday night to overcome the Red Sox for the No. 1 spot in this week's Power Rankings. And entering the ninth inning with a four-run deficit, San Diego's hopes appeared bleak. The No. 1 ranking would have to wait at least one more week.

    But then something came over the Padres, as if they were suddenly emboldened by the opportunity. Determined not to squander a fleeting chance to be called baseball's best team, the Padres rallied against Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton. And when Russell Branyan walked with the bases loaded to force across the winning run, the Padres had done it -- No. 1, baby.

    While the Red Sox went 2-5 against the Yankees and A's, the Padres enjoyed a 5-1 week that included a sweep of the Dodgers and closer Trevor Hoffman registering his record 500th save. The Red Sox fall to No. 2 after four straight weeks at No. 1, with the Angels nipping at their heels at No. 3. Last week's No. 2, the Mets, dropped five of six games to fall to No. 5 in the rankings.







    When is the last time you've seen this? The Padres pitching staff is unbelievable right now and they just stole a left handed pitcher with their 19th pick in the draft.

    NL west has great pitching
