Barry + Udrih was being considered for Maggette around deadline time last year.
A bit off topic but, I recently heard from a fairly reliable Clipper source that the Clips offerered Maggette to the Lakers in mid-season for Luke Walton straight up . . .

and the Lakers turned it down.

Sounds preposterous but that's what I heard.

He'd be better served with another year in Europe. I cant see him getting on the court in his first season with the guys we have. Overseas he can work on his jump shot and iron out the creases in his game and come back next season with Tiago. Although i dont really like the idea of 2 new comers with out system.
Right, it makes no sense at all to

    1) have him working with Engelland on his shot

    2) start learning the Spurs system now

    3) get some playing time during the regular season and give some of our ancient vets some rest

    4) have someone around that you can throw out on the court in a bind and have bother someone like Dirk or another long SF with his length

That would be a horrible idea

Well, another thing to consider is that Sanikidze might be under contract another year. He signed a two-year contract last summer. There might not be an NBA buyout.

Even if the Spurs have to wait on him, at least it now looks like he'll be worth the wait. He's shown to be a 6-foot-9, 21-year-old wing who moves like a point guard with the wingspan of a power forward or center.

Granted, he's only played 22 minutes so far in summer league but it's hard not to be excited by his potential. Eight points, nine rebounds and some good defense.

Sanikidze looks like a keeper to me so far

Sanikidze has an energy-effective game. He can get stuff done by hustling, which means if he simply hits his spots in sets, he has a place in the occasional rotation.

I was tied up tonight and missed viewing the game, so thanks to all for the analysis and comments. Good stuff...but over the tax threshold and one slot available to fill.

Is Sanikidze no laonger under contract with his Spnish team from last year? Amazing that he got hardly any playing time with them.
Can't find any info on his contract. Seeing as the Spurs have made no mention of bringing him over this year, that means either they didn't expect him to be this good or he's scheduled for another year in Spain.

Last summer, Sanikidze led the Republic of Georgia to that U-20 division B championship. At the time, that looked like some bad compe ion. But Petteri Koponen and a few others who are now looking NBA quality were in that tournament.

It's pretty weird though that we haven't heard a peep from the Spurs about Sanikidze ever making the team. Perhaps they are as surprised as the rest of us.

They were talking about doing that THIS season if the roster spot could be freed up. But Mahinmi is nowhere near contributing this season...let alone 2 years ago. On the other hand, Sanikidze looks like he could fill in a bit right now if needed and maybe play a role within a year. I doubt Mahinmi can even crack the rotation NEXT year when Horry and Elson are off the team...and thats without adding Splitter.

For those who haven't watched Sanikidze play, he's basically Andrei Kirilenko meets Renaldo Balkman. Of course not anywhere as good just yet, but so far there's nothing I've seen that doesn't make it seem like he could be an NBA player one day.

Sanikidze just inked a new contract recently for two seasons with Estudiantes. No word on buyout issues yet. It simply wasn't an issue until a couple of days ago. Nobody really thought Viktor was nearly ready.

I almost hope thats the truth. That would mean that they realize how much of a bright spot Sanikidze is and that he needs to be a focus of their international development. It would also mean that they have not simply been snubbing him...they just didn't know.

Sanikidze barely got any floor time with Estudaintes last year so it would be hard to know how his game was. Maybe Estudiantes was hiding him.

Well, we are going haywire over barely 20 minutes of playing time in the Summer League, most of it against the dubious defensive team known as the Golden State Warriors.

That said, there's a lot to like there, even if he's not on the radar and the Spurs refuse to recognize him. He sure as serves a need, though.

Good news, it looks like I was wrong. He signed that contract about a year ago:

    Estudiantes lands Viktor Sanikidze
    By Robert Mayor

Future Georgian pearl Viktor Sanikidze (SF, 2'03, 19) has agreed terms with MMT Estudiantes for the next two seasons. Player (Selected with the number 42 in the 2004 Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, although his rights were traded the same day to the San Antonio Spurs for a 2005 second-round draft pick and cash considerations) comes from PRO A Dijon.

Sanikidze has also played for multiple national teams for the Republic of Georgia, including in the European Championship for Juniors in 2004 and the Ostchem U20 European Championship Division B in 2006.

I am surprised that everyone is surprised by Butler's O ability...that's why Isiah signed him. It wasn't because of his D. If Butler gets minutes he can put up numbers better than an average NBA C...he'd already shown that in NY IMO.

Yet another case of Spursfans judging a player by the minutes Pop allows them to play...in error.

Anyway...if Butler can't play D...he's not going to play for Pop....and that's just the way it is. I honestly think Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley would have not gotten off the bench for Pop...but anyway...

I am learning to appreciate Pop's stubborness though...seeing Butler stand there while everyone else runs down the court is an unusual sight for Spursfans...Spurs bigmen just don't do that sort of thing, Pop doesn't allow them on the court if they do. But you can tell Jackie is trying to do what the Spurs ask of him....that's the main thing...that's what usually equals success for a project.

As for the rest of it...I still like White better than Williams, it's not even close IMO...White is sucking because the PG is not making plays for him and doing it for himself is the weakest part of his game...he's not a creator type of player, he's very much a role player and it's when he's asked to be more than that he struggles IMO...he wasn't asked to do anything of the sort in his brief minutes with the Spurs this past season, when he played so well, he'd played off of his teamates. I still say he's a keeper...just don't ask him to be a SuperStar. It's not a crime to be a role player.

Sanikidze...well there is the long three. I wonder why Pau buried him....the secret is out now. He needs to be on the team this year. I dont' see why the Spurs can't do it.

I think I saw on a broadcast that this season was the first season the Spurs have finally turned a NetPRofit since moving into the AT&T...makes sense to me that since the Spurs had a spot for Mahinimi and he is injured...perhaps something can be done with Victor. We need him now and it'd be nice to have him mentored by the all the versatile and talented swings we have on this team. The Spurs had to have a good idea of what the cap would be when they considered brining Ian over....they always know the cap before it's set.
