The Tigers simply released him after he batted .253, .248, .241, .235 in consecutive years.
Another guy the Rangers gave up on. Guy is hitting .296 BA 22 hr 63 rbi
Here is what the rangers acquired in the deal.
2002: Oakland A's (via trade with Mike Venafro for Mario Ramos, Jason Hart, Ryan Ludwick, & Gerald Laird on Jan 14, 2002)
All we have left to show is Gerald Laird and his .220 BA
The Tigers simply released him after he batted .253, .248, .241, .235 in consecutive years.
Tough to find a whole lot of fault with that one. Pena has been somewhere in between awful and mediocre until this season.
And the Rangers more than upgraded at that position over that span.
^^What he said. There is plenty to find fault in with Rangers trades but that one was ok and is still OK to me. Plus, I really think Laird will pick it up soon.
It is nearly impossible to steal on Laird. Try to forget the Batting avg.
He showed flashes of being a very good ballplayer with the Tigers, but never on a consistent basis. I think there was a mental toughness issue, hope he's over it.
Another ex-Tiger first baseman, Dmitri Young, is having an excellent year with Washington.
