The Red Sox have made significant progress toward signing free-agent left-hander David Wells to a two-year contract with incentives, The Sporting News has learned.
The signing of Wells, coupled with the expected return of free-agent right-hander Pedro Martinez, likely would end the Sox's pursuit of free-agent right-hander Carl Pavano.
Wells' deal would be creatively structured, according to a source close to the negotiations, possibly enabling the Sox to engage in other pursuits, including a possible run at free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria.
However, the Cardinals' talks with Renteria stalled Friday when the team would not grant the player a five-year, $45 million contract, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
Free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera could emerge as an fallback position for the Cardinals, but it's also possible that the team will turn to a less expensive option and sign Placido Polanco to play second base.
TPark, looks like the Cards might lost Edgar.
Wells = Martinez
Red Sox need to get someone to replace Derek Lowe
The Red Sox need some youth in their pitching...Wakefield is 37, Wells is 41, and Schilling is 38.
They have Aroyo, but need another one or two.
Arroyo is pretty sorry.
You're Pretty Sorry, Aaroyo Is A Pimp.
If by pimp you mean that hair, then yeah, I agree.
