    Tony Massenburg?

    Mike Wilks?

    Romain Sato?

    Sean Marks?

    IMO, Wilks.

Yeah, hes been a trooper, but come on, this team realisticly has 4 point guards counting Brent Barry who IMO, that was what he was brought over for.

Subtract Mike Wilks, add Karl Malone?

Gee I wonder if you do that......... derrrrr maybe...

I'm betting Mike Wilks or Romain Sato will take the cut, my money being on the latter.

Wilks has proven himself in a few games whereas Sato, though showing a few flashes in the preseason, hasn't really seemed to live up to Pop's expectations. With the recent injury to Tony Parker fresh on the burner, I doubt the Spurs organization will be rushing to drop any 1s from the roster, even IF they do have the option of playing Barry at the point.

Longshot odds go to Sean Marks, but I still think his patience with the Spurs organization has earned him his seat on the team.

I think I have to remove Sato cause he has a gauranteed contract.

That and the Spurs, for whatever reason, are very high on him.

I heard that Sato was a really good defender and rebounder. Maybe thats why they have such high hopes of him.

    Good point. Probably Wilks then.

Still seems like a risky move, considering TP's injury and Barry's inconsistency as of late. It's easy to hope that they might work to fix each other, but if that fails to happen, Beno is going to have a heavy load to carry at the point.

And if Beno should break again, we'd have to play Tim at the point and all would break loose.

Perhaps a riskier move is doing nothing at all to address your glaring weakness in the frontcourt for fear of losing a 3rd or 4th string point guard.

I'd say Wilks... though you're right in that he's proven himself pretty well with the minutes he's played...there's just not room for everyone and we don't need 4 PGs

I never said that we shouldn't pick up Malone.

I'm one of those new age Spurs fans, so personally, I don't have a whole lot of angst against the guy, except for what he did to us in Purple and Gold. And like Popovich said, when you're talking about picking up a player of his caliber for minimal pay, it really is a 'no-brainer'.

I do remember seeing him elbow DRob in the jaw whilst watching the game at Tiffany's B&G with my dad and brother. I was little though, all I remember were lots of rowdy drunk people weren't very happy.

    Stolen from the Harvey post.

Malone would get the vet minimum salary of $1.1 mil, prorated for however many games are left in the season.

Also of note is the following...

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#9

    Quote:

One interesting thing about minimum-salary contracts is that for certain players, the league office actually pays part of their salary. This happens with players who have been in the NBA for five or more seasons and are playing under a one-year, ten-day or rest-of-season contract at the minimum salary. In these cases, the team pays the player at the minimum salary level for a four-year veteran, and the league pays the remainder. For example, in 99-00 the minimum salary for a four-year veteran is $510,000, so a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,000,000, would be paid $510,000 by his team and $490,000 by the league. Only the four-year minimum is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. The reason for doing this is so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive.

So Malone would cost the Spurs less than probably everyone else on the roster. The horror.

The Spurs would have spent $745,046 of their own money had they signed him before the season started. It's less now because it's prorated for games already played. If he's even remotely healthy, what better player could be signed for that amount?

Would be Wilks as I reckon they'd want to persist with Sato for a while longer.

Why is Sato's name even on this list?

IF someone has to get cut, its down to either Wilks or Massenburg.

Personally, I prefer Wilks to Massenburg, but I think Wilks is the odd man out on this deal.

Parker's groin pull may be an on-going issue. Quicker point guards such as Nash, Ridenour, etc. will be tough for Udrih to handle, much less for someone like Brent Barry. Wilks can defend quicker PGs so you don't cut him at this juncture.

    Sean Marks?

He hasn't seen a minute on the floor last season or yet this season.

I'm not saying he should get cut, but maybe.
