Pro basketball: Spurs trade Udrih to Timberwolves

In the final hours before the deadline to set rosters for opening night, the Spurs traded point guard Beno Udrih to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a conditional second-round pick in the 2008 draft.

Udrih, the club’s first-round draft pick in the 2004 draft, broke the index finger on his left (shooting) hand in the first days of training camp and did not play in the Spurs’ seven pre-season games. Having lost his status as primary backup to Tony Parker to veteran Jacque Vaughn last season, Udrih’s injury and the compe ive play of rookie Darius Washington in the pre-season combined to make him expendable.
“This is a reflection on Darius’ play in the pre-season,” Spurs’ general manager R.C. Buford said. “It was unfortunate for Beno that he was injured. He wasn’t healthy and able to take advantage of Tony’s unavailability and Jacque’s injury, and Darius did take advantage.
“This deal also provides us some roster flexibility, both now and going forward.”
Indeed, since the Spurs received only a future draft pick, they were able to jettison Udrih’s $1.75 million contract. Washington’s contract is believed to be at or near the rookie minimum, which is $427,163 for the 2007-08 season.
Udrih played in 73 regular season games last season, averaging 4.7 points and 1.7 assists in an average of 13.0 minutes per game. He saw action in only eight of the Spurs’ 20 playoff games and scored only two post-season points in a total of only 20 post-season minutes.

You also have to love the fact they waited to the last day to pull the trigger on this one, basically ensuring Beno would not be starting the season with any NBA team. Way to send a message.
I agree with that idea. While I think the notion of trading Beno has always been a topic of discussion, I think the Spurs feel as though they have a comfort zone with Washington that allows them to enter the season with 3 points including Darius.
This is another area in which the past, I think, taught a lesson. Pop went into the 2003-04 season with, essentially, Parker and Carter as his point guards. When Parker couldn't play in the opener, and then Carter got hurt 2 games in, the Spurs scrambled to bring in Jason Hart and Shane Heal. They spent the rest of the season with only Hart as a backup to Parker (until the infamous Charlie Ward acquisition) and had nobody who could really play the point when Parker needed rest. That team survived on motion and ball movement, but I think Pop has always desired the safety blanket of having true point-type players to run the show. The point guard fiasco of 2003-04 begot the drafting of Beno Udrih, which has now run its course. In the meantime, Pop has made finding point guards a bit of a priority.
Identifying a 3rd guy who could be trusted to play quality minutes at the point in the NBA was likely the spark that made the Beno deal come to fruition.
I think Darius is going to have to do a lot to convince Pop to abandon Vaughn as the backup, mostly because the notion of sending Darius to Austin has some developmental appeal. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that Darius could, in essence, play his way out of assignment to the Toros if he's good early on, but I suspect that the plan for him is a tour of duty in Austin while Vaughn resumes the backup point role.
I see the logic in that scenario and think it could be a perfect spot to make that kind of a move. At the very least, it seems we can be sure that he's mentally tougher and far more motivated than Beno, even if not as physically talented as Beno is. I still have the feeling that Darius will get some chances early, but that even if he shows some signs, the Spurs will focus more on development than getting immediate contributions.
I wonder what RC means by providing flexibility NOW and going forward. Is there someone else the FO is interested in obtaining?
To be traded by the champions is one thing. But then to be cut by one of the worst teams in the league, that's something else.
Awesome! There's gonna be a lot of celebrating on this board tonight!![]()

Um, I think you're reading way too much into this one.
It's more like they caught McHale drunk off his ass at home and pulled a fast one before he could sober up.
They can now add another player without going over the lux tax threshold.

You are not alone. This year, i will root for the Rockets![]()
I've only started reading this thread, but I could've sworn it said right in the article that Minnesota was going to waive Beno. Did I misread?
Nope. Salary cap deal where the Spurs send Beno and $2-$3M in order to save 2x that much. Minny gets free money and gives up a pick so highly protected it'll never get to SA.
Adios. You are not alone. This year, i will root for the Rockets
Yeah Minnesota isn't totally stupid. They cut his ass as soon as his name was official on the Minnesota side.I've only started reading this thread, but I could've sworn it said right in the article that Minnesota was going to waive Beno. Did I misread?
Wow! I've been away from the forum for several hours, I log in and see that it's Xmas time in November, baby! Best news of the offseason. Well, okay. Almost.
Still, the Spurs have rid themselves of their last piece of dead weight. I'm thrilled for Darius and now he doesn't have to look over his shoulder and is assured a future here if he continues to develop.
This cap the end of a very memorable offseason for the Spurs.
I'd worry now about who they're going to pick up for that last roster spot. But it's time to have a drink on this one!
