He might as well go for it. The Astros aren't paying anybody else.
What is this ...either pay him $22 million or he retires? Houston wouldn't even pay Beltran half that.
Roger Clemens is making a pitch for yet another major-league record, this time in arbitration.
Clemens, 42, filed for $22 million US in salary arbitration on Tuesday, which, if he wins, easily surpasses the previous high of $18.5 million US submitted by New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter in 2001.
Jeter later agreed to a 10-year contract worth $189 million US.
Clemens, who was offered $13.5 million US to return to the Houston Astros this season, is also contemplating retirement, too.
Clemens ended a brief retirement last season to pitch for the Astros, posting a 18-4 record with a 2.98 earned-run average in 33 starts and striking out 218 batters in 214 1/3 innings en route to winning an unprecedented seventh Cy Young Award.
The right-hander started for the National League in the 2004 MLB All-Star Game plus went 2-1 in four playoff starts totalling 27 innings as Houston came within one victory of advancing to its first-ever World Series.
Clemens is 328-164 lifetime with a 3.18 ERA, 117 complete games, 46 shutouts and 4,317 strikeouts in 640 pitching appearances over 21 MLB seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Astros.
He might as well go for it. The Astros aren't paying anybody else.
It doesn't matter, the arbitrator would never rule in favor of Clemens if it got that far. It would make him the highest paid pitcher ever for one season, which would mean he is by far the best pitcher in the game, which he is not. So he is not going to get 22 mil, if it goes to arbitration.
That 7th Cy Young says that he was the best pitcher in the game last year.
He has been leaning towards retirement, and probably just threw out an outrageous figure. If they decide to pay him $22M, ....pitch one more year. If not, then he's perfectly content retiring.
negative, it says he was the best in the national league, which he wasn't anyway. it was randy johnson. but randy didn't get it cuz his team couldn't hit the ball.
I'm kinda torn on this argument. Clemens is no ing doubt great, but Randy Johnson is amazing. I guess I would agree and say that RJ was the better pitcher last season.
lol,
kick ass Roger Clemems....
If the Astros dont bring back Clemens, wich its looking like that wont happen.
3rd or 4th placeville for the 'Stros.
i think he is just in around askin for that much in arbitration because 22 is the number he wears and he would be playing in his 22nd season. he probably just likes the number. i'm sure he knows he won't actually get that if he decides to play and take it to arbitration.
if it goes to the arbitrator.
I wouldn't doubt it if he won.
there is not a chance in he would win. clemens would have to make the case that he would basically have the best year any pitcher has had. the previous high salary for a pitcher in a season was 17.5mil by pedro. i guess he would win if they believed he would put up number like 25 wins with a 1.5 era or some . otherwise, not a chance.
22 mil for a guy who might end up being the 3rd starter? please. an arbitrator would not be that stupid.
i'd bet they might be likely to settle at about 18 mil or so. ing that arbitration bull .
Looks like Clemens got his money. $18 million.
He's probably worth at least that in revenue to the Astros.
If we lose Lance Berkman because of this, I'm going to become a Rangers fan.
It won't effect Berkman. Clemens is off the books again next year. Unless I'm mistaken somewhere.
Don't they have to resign Berkman this winter?
Oh, I'm not sure. I thought Berkman was eligible to become a FA after next season. I know they were trying to sign him to a long term deal, but they weren't really at risk of losing him until next season. At that point, I think Clemens will be off the books, and they can throw the bank at Lance. I'm no salary guru, so there's a chance I might be wrong, that's just what I understood.
Berkman is eligible for arbitration, Berkman wants 11 million, the Astros are offering 10 million. That will most likely be settled before arbitration since it's only 1 mil apart.
Which they have now agreed to a 1 year, 10.5 mil deal.
I'm guessing it's one year because they'll be able to pay him more once Bagwell's contract is off the books.
