    Rockets sign Rod Strickland
    LAST UPDATE: 1/19/2005 3:18:21 PM

"Rod gives us another experienced veteran in our backcourt," said general manager Carroll Dawson. "He will give us more depth, as we fight through an assortment of injuries."

The 38-year-old Strickland split time last season with Orlando and Toronto and averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 assists in 61 games.

Strickland has also enjoyed stints with New York, San Antonio, Portland, Washington, Miami and Minnesota during his career and has posted averages of 13.4 points and 7.4 assists per contest.

He currently ranks seventh in NBA history with 7,948 assists and 19th all-time with 1,613 career steals.

In other news, the club released guard Brandin Knight, who made one appearance after signing a 10-day contract on Sunday.

    I've always liked Strickland.

He was my favorite Spur when he was here.

I guess Rod's not ready to throw in the towel, just yet.

Oops! Maybe towel is a bad term to use.

Strickland is a PG. The Rockets have not had anyone besides the young rookie (Barrett) to be able to run their offense and direct them when they get bogged down. Strickland is at least a real PG, even though I doubt he'll be able to play defense to Van Gundy's liking.

Ward is on the IR and over the hill with no D. Gaines is on the IR and of questionable PG skills. Sura, Wesley and Barry are all Shooting Guards trying to bring the ball up and enter the offense. PG is the Rockets biggest area of need. Is Strickland the answer? Probably not, but he's at least legit at that position.

If this is true then why do stiffs like c ward and a carter have jobs and strickland was out of work?

I still think Elliot dunks and Spurs win if Sean doesnt stop when Rod passed the ball. I blame both equally for that missed oppertunity.

Damn, if Rod Strickland had had a better at ude and took better care of his body, he'd be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Dude was as natural a point guard as there ever was, and basically half-stepped through his whole career just on talent. And is still seventh in all-time assists.
