The San Antonio Spurs (9-15) and Phoenix Suns (11-13) play in Mexico City on Saturday. Both teams are coming off of disappointing losses. The Spurs lost at home to the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. On Wednesday, the Suns lost at home to the not-quite-as-lowly Memphis Grizzlies
The Suns started off the season winning seven of their first 11 games. Since then, they’ve gone 4-9. Prior to the Cavs setback, the Spurs had won two straight games and three of their previous four contests.
Devin Booker Injury Update – Will He Play?
Devin Booker is questionable for the game against the Spurs due to a forearm injury. He’ll be motivated to not only play but play well, as his mother is Mexican-American. He told the media recently that he wanted to give a good show for the Mexico City crowd.
A motivated Booker would be a scary proposition for the Spurs. As it is, he’s averaging 25.0 points, 6.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 50.7% from the floor, 40.6% from three-point range and 90.3% from the free throw line. The 23-year-old is knocking on the door of becoming a full-blown superstar.
Along with Booker, the Suns have Aron Baynes, Dario Saric and Cameron Johnson on the injury report. However, each of those three players is listed as probable so it’d be a surprise if they weren’t able to go.
San Antonio Spurs Starting Lineup
Considering that the Suns put a lot of speed on the court, it’s likely that Rudy Gay will remain in the starting lineup. He has started the last five games for the Spurs. Joining Gay in the starting lineup will likely be Derrick White, Bryn Forbes, DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge.
Phoenix Suns Starting Lineup
The Suns have been starting a fivesome of Ricky Rubio, Devin Booker, Kelly Oubre Jr., Dario Saric and Frank Kaminsky. It’s possible that Phoenix could opt to move Aron Baynes into the starting lineup in order to use him against Aldridge.
All of those players are three-point threats, so the Spurs will need to really be active out on the perimeter. If they sag too much or they are slow getting back in transition, the Suns can fill up on three-pointers in a hurry.
Spurs vs. Suns – Prediction
The Suns are favored by two points, with oddsmakers believing the final score will be 115-113. If Booker doesn’t play, the Spurs should be the favorite by tip-off. Even if he does play, though, the Spurs have a chance if they approach the Suns like they are the Los Angeles Clippers or Houston Rockets — and not the Cavs.
San Antonio Spurs – 118
Phoenix Suns – 117
