Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Boston Celtics – Game #18

The San Antonio Spurs will be back in action tonight when they take on the Boston Celtics in the AT&T Center. The Spurs were scheduled to take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday but that game was postponed shortly before the contest was to begin.

While San Antonio ended up traveling to New Orleans for no reason, they can’t be too upset with how things have played out. First of all, it appears as if no player tested positive for COVID-19, which was the fear leading to the postponement.

Secondly, the Spurs got a well-timed rest day. Not only was the Pelicans game the second night of a back-to-back, it was part of a stretch that called for the Spurs to play five games in seven nights. Now it’s a much more manageable four games in seven nights.

San Antonio Spurs Injury Update

Drew Eubanks and Quinndary Weatherspoon were both cleared for Monday’s game against the Pelicans and are again cleared to return tonight. Eubanks has been out for about three weeks due to COVID-19 protocols, while Weatherspoon has been sidelined after undergoing left knee surgery in the offseason.

The only player not available to the Spurs right now is Derrick White, who is expected to be out a few more weeks due to a fractured second toe on his left foot.

Boston Celtics Injury Update

The Celtics, who enter this game with a record of 10-6, are as healthy as they’ve been all season. In fact, it’s the first game this season that Boston will have Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker and Jaylen Brown available to play in the same game. Tatum has missed five games, while Walker has only been able to play in four games.

Rookie guard Payton Pritchard and second-year guard Romeo Langford are out for the Celtics.

Spurs vs. Celtics – How the Spurs Can Win

Vegas has the Celtics as the favorites to win this game — and it’s difficult to agree with that assessment. The Celtics are healthy and they have a better road record (5-4) than the home record of the Spurs (3-5).

For San Antonio to win, they’re going to have to put a lot of points on the board. While Boston has a lot of offensive weapons, they’re only a mediocre defensive team. (To put the Celtics defense in perspective, the Spurs have been a better defensive team this season.)

If the Spurs can get to 120 points, they’ll have a good chance of winning this game. That sounds like a lot of points but San Antonio is averaging 118.9 points per game in their victories this season.
