The San Antonio Spurs (2-3) return to the Frost Bank Center with the goal of winning their second consecutive contest. However, it won’t be easy. The Minnesota Timberwolves (3-2) head to South Texas after an impressive victory over the Denver Nuggets last night. Last season, the Timberwolves made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals.
In San Antonio’s latest game, the Spurs defeated the Utah Jazz by a final count of 106-88. Victor Wembanyama led the way with an epic 5×5 performance. In 34 minutes, the star sophomore had 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks. It was the second 5×5 of Wembanyama’s career. Since 2020, no one else in the NBA has recorded a 5×5.
San Antonio Spurs Injury Update
The Spurs remain without two of their key pieces. Devin Vassell hasn’t been cleared yet after offseason surgery on his foot. Tre Jones is also sidelined with an ankle injury.
With Jones out, the Spurs have been using a combination of Blake Wesley and Stephon Castle at the backup point guard position. In the second halves of games, it’s mostly been Castle at point guard when Paul isn’t in the game.
San Antonio Spurs Starting Lineup
The Spurs will likely start the same exact starting lineup for the sixth consecutive game. Expect head coach Gregg Popovich to go with Chris Paul at point guard, Julian Champagnie at shooting guard, Harrison Barnes at small forward, Jeremy Sochan at power forward and Wembanyama at center.
Off the bench, Keldon Johnson has been operating as San Antonio’s sixth man.
Anthony Edwards Stars for the Timberwolves
Anthony Edwards continues on his journey of becoming the latest superstar in the NBA. The 23-year-old is off to a great start for Minnesota. In the first five games of the season, Edwards is averaging 29.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He’s shooting 46% from the floor, including 43.3% from three-point range. Last season, Edwards averaged a then career-high of 25.9 points per game. He’s on pace to shatter that mark this season.
Betting Guide: Spurs vs. Timberwolves
The Timberwolves are favored by four points and the over/under is 214.5 points. The smart money is on the under. The Spurs have been much better defensively this season and the Timberwolves are playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Last season, Minnesota was one of the best defensive teams in the league — and that will surely again be the case this season.
