Reggie Miller Suggests Spurs’ Becky Hammon for Houston Rockets Head Coach

Becky Hammon’s name is popping up quite a bit as far as NBA head coaching vacancies, with the latest mention associated with the Houston Rockets. NBA analyst Reggie Miller is advocating for the possibility of Houston shaking up their franchise’s culture by hiring the San Antonio Spurs’ assistant.

Reggie Miller Believes Becky Hammon Could Bring Houston ‘Culture Change’

The Houston Rockets are coming off another disappointing NBA postseason, this time getting bounced in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers. There are now rumors that Russell Westbrook could get traded. In addition, Mike D’Antoni, the team’s coach for the past four seasons, announced he won’t return as coach next season.

That creates a vacancy for the job that NBA analyst Reggie Miller believes Becky Hammon is suited to fill. Per News 4 San Antonio, Miller says Hammon could bring a necessary culture change to the Rockets.

“Becky Hammon has learned the Spurs way, which is a culture that is totally different from what the Rockets are. Maybe you need a culture change, and what better person if you want to be on the outside and break the gender barrier and change things totally?” Miller said.

Miller added that bringing Hammon in as head coach shouldn’t be a difficult choice for Houston. After all, they had no problem changing up their team’s look by adding Russell Westbrook to the backcourt with James Harden.

“Why not push the boundaries. You pushed the boundaries when you went 6-7 and below and brought in Harden and Westbrook and played iso ball. Why not push it more and hire Becky Hammon? I think she would be a fabulous coach,” Miller said.”

Hammon Mentioned for Knicks, Pacers Jobs

Reggie Miller became famous as a sharpshooter with the Indiana Pacers over his 18-season career. Ironically, Hammon’s name popped up within the past several weeks for the head coaching vacancy in Indiana after Nate McMillan was dismissed. Hammon was reportedly amongst candidates to have a virtual interview for the Pacers job, as well as Spurs’ assistant Will Hardy.

Last December, Becky Hammon was among New York Knicks’ head coaching candidates. The team fired David Fizdale with CNBC reporting that Hammon would be interested in coaching there if she could land a long-term deal of four or five years.

So far there’s no word on whether or not Hammon is amongst interview candidates for Houston. The Los Angeles Clippers’ Sam Cassell has popped up as a candidate. Cassell spent the first three seasons of his career in Houston, winning two titles with the Rockets.

In addition, a report suggests former Cavs and Lakers coach Tyronn Lue is a consideration for the job. There are unconfirmed rumors linking Gregg Popovich’s name. However, he seems intent on returning as Spurs’ head coach for next season. Visit our Spurs news page for more updates on the team and players.
