The NBA has officially unveiled the San Antonio Spurs schedule for the 2021-22 season with several highlights to look forward to. They include games featuring former Spurs players DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, and Patty Mills as they return to play San Antonio. In addition, there are several televised matchups of note and games against the reigning NBA champs and Golden State Warriors.
Spurs’ Schedule Features Early Matchup With Bucks
The upcoming NBA season looks like it should begin on schedule, as the Spurs’ first official home game is slated for October 20, 2021. They’ll take on the Orlando Magic, a team that finished at 21-51 last season and near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. The team features emerging young star Cole Anthony and the No. 5 draft pick, Jalen Suggs.
On October 23, the Spurs will host the reigning NBA champions, the Milwaukee Bucks. Last season, the team was successful at home against Milwaukee, picking up a 146-125 win this past May. However, DeMar DeRozan was the leading scorer, and Patty Mills came off the bench to score 20 points. Both players are no longer with the Spurs roster.
In terms of their home schedule, the Spurs also get two seven-game homestands for the season. The first will arrive from January 12 through 23, with the second from March 7 through 18. They’ll have 12 back-to-backs with teams this season, and four of those are at home.
The Spurs’ first road game arrives on Friday, October 22, as they visit the NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.
When do DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills, and Rudy Gay Return to San Antonio?
The San Antonio Spurs schedule will also feature the anticipated returns of three former roster members, DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills, and Rudy Gay. On December 27, fans will see Rudy Gay as the first to return to play his former team. Gay signed with the playoff-contending Utah Jazz earlier this month.
Patty Mills makes his return to San Antonio on January 21. Mills became a member of Eastern Conference contenders with the Brooklyn Nets earlier this month, giving them a solid backup for Kyrie Irving.
Former All-Star DeMar DeRozan is now a member of the Chicago Bulls due to a sign-and-trade agreement, which took place this past month. DeRozan and the Bulls are slated to take on the Spurs on Friday, January 28, in San Antonio.
Spurs Have One National TV Game, Five NBA TV Matchups
The Spurs finished last season with a losing record of 33-39 but still qualified for the NBA’s play-in tournament for the postseason. However, they failed to advance after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies. That will be the team that San Antonio faces in their only nationally televised game, set for Wednesday, January 26 on ESPN.
Five Spurs games will take place on NBA TV. The first is at Oklahoma City on Nov. 7, with the second at Portland on Dec. 2. Two other games will feature the Spurs playing the Warriors away and at home on Mar. 20 and Apr. 9, respectively.
That April 9th game is the second to last game of the season for the San Antonio Spurs. They’ll close out the schedule on Sunday, April 10, against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks.
