Trump offers $100m bond instead of full $454m as he appeals New York case
Donald Trump is asking a New York appeals court if he can pay $100m of his $454m civil fraud judgment as he awaits an appeal.
The judgment also banned Trump from taking out loans from New York banks for three years, which his lawyers said makes it “impossible” for him to pay the full amount up front.
Trump’s lawyers are asking the appeals court to halt the collection of the rest of the amount, along with the judgment’s loan ban, until the appeal goes through.
“The exorbitant and punitive amount of the judgment, coupled with an unlawful and uncons utional blanket prohibition on lending transactions, would make it impossible to secure and post a complete bond,” Trump’s lawyers Clifford Robert, Alina Habba and Michael Farina wrote.
The New York attorney general’s office said the appeals court should deny Trump’s request as Trump has not said he does not have the assets to fulfil the judgment’s full amount.
“Defendants all but concede that Trump has insufficient liquid assets to satisfy the judgment; defendants would need ‘to raise capital’,” prosecutors told the court in a filing. “A prevailing plaintiff is en led to have her award secured, and defendants have never demonstrated that Mr Trump’s liquid assets could satisfy the full amount of the judgment.”
