Look at Jackson's career stats. Between 2004-2011, he averaged at least 18 ppg seven times and at least 20 ppg four times. Obviously, that was partly because of the role assigned to him. He won't average more than 10 with the Spurs because he will always be the third or fourth option in the offense. But that's okay. He is still capable of scoring 18 ppg given the right situation. It would be erroneous to evaluate his success with the Spurs based on stats. It doesn't give an accurate indication. His stats could all drop off, and he could still have a huge impact on the team's success.
He's going to assume RJ's scapegoat position. KL right now is the best fit for the 3 position.

No doubt, this is a GREAT trade. RJ was worthless and his game was flat and uninspiring.
    Perfectly said.

It's a great trade for the Warriors..

Jefferson fits in very well with a non-playoff team like the Warriors..no pressure, just play offensive ball..as an offensive player, he's easily better than Jax..

In addition, they received a first round pick..

I like the trade, as a Spurs fan, but strictly from a basketball perspective, Golden State easily got the better deal..
The best part of the trade for the Warriors is they'll be able to tank enough to protect their lottery pick. When it comes to tanking, Jefferson is a magnificent addition.

I think the greatest value could be Jax's expiring contract. That might be able to be turned into a good big. The FO is basically in the same position they were with RJ in '10.
Good point. So instead of amnestying RJ this summer, the Spurs will have a tradeable asset in Jack's expiring deal. So for a first round draft pick, the Spurs save $11.1 million, get a nice-sized expiring contract and a wild card who has a chance to be a very positive addition.

They just don't understand the mental aspect of the two situations. RJ was sucking the life out of the Spurs and Jack probably would suck the life out of any team that wasn't the Spurs. For immediate purposes...its a good move for both teams. Warriors fans will face a bit of sobering reality around the middle of next season when they realize that RJ is going to pick up his option and they will have to deal with another whole season of him.
Yeah, Warriors fans need to get back to us a year from now and tell us what they think. Instead of having Jack's contract about to come off the books, they'll look forward to a year and a half more of RJ

Dude, calm down and use your brain instead of your emotions...

I'm not mad at getting rid of RJ. Let's get that straight. But this trade is NOT a salary dump. If it was, then it would've been smarter to keep RJ and just amnesty his contract at the end of the season. RJ was traded FOR someone, and that someone has a similar salary this year and the next. SJax may or may not be eligible for that same amnesty, but if the Spurs use it, it means the trade was a failure and the Spurs lost a 1st round pick in the process. To further the risk, I understand there's some rule that means SJax, who's reported as injured, must play on the team in a few days to be eligible to play in the playoffs?

Regardless of that, this trade is about making a run for the le. And while I feel as if SJax is a MUCH better fit in the Spurs scheme, there's a REASON why he wasn't resigned by the Spurs in 03 (he was vocally bitter about it as well).

Let's just hope Jax has matured. If I recall, an immature Pao Gasol was upset last year about a rumor surrounding his gf. Lamar Odom is a mess in Dallas. Some guys are just not right chemisty-wise. I'm not sayin SJax is not - as I really hope he is. I'm just mentioning we need to be cautious.

I do hope and pray Pop has got this one...
SJax's contract is easier to trade than RJ.

This trade is awesome for 2 reasons:
    1) When Jax takes a three, you feel that it's gonna go in as oppose to RJ in which you pray that it'll make it.

    2) Jax's contract will be a useful trade asset to all those teams that desire to get into the Chris Paul, Dwight Howard sweepstakes that will happen for 2013.

If we are lucky, Jax may convince him he needs to slap a mofo every now and then.

Still not worth re-signing RJ, but this goes a long way to make up for it if Jack still has the clutch gene.

#1 is absolutely false..Jefferson is actually a solid 3-point shooter, while Jackson is streaky, at best(putting it nicely)..

    #2 is a good point..

The pros of acquiring Jackson, from a basketball perspective: much better defender, handles pressure well, adds toughness and swag to a team that desperately needs it, and he's an underrated passer..

As a scorer, he's inferior to RJ, as bad as that sounds..

I want to go on record saying that I think S-Jax will suck and may not even be a rotation guy come playoffs time.

Needless to say, I hope I'm wrong.

Ill add my dos centavos and say welcome back Capt Jack. Hes older, maybe hes lost a step but he is some positive at ude and its not like hes totally gone. Re Jefferson, seems like a nice guy but he just never had it here, good luck to him and his long expensive contract in Golden State.

Yes jax is older(got some hamstring issues) and yuck on his fg% but hes what the spurs need-at ude, toughness and the willingness to take and make the big shot

If you're talking about the trade deadline, it was 2 hours ago.

If you're talking about the deadline for a player to be active with a team to be eligible for the playoffs, I think it's a week or so from now, but not 100% sure.

    Stephen Jackson's stats:

    2003
    Points per 36 mins: 15.1
    TS%: .526
    RB%: 7.4%
    AST%: 14.1%
    TOV%: 16.4%

    2011
    Points per 36 mins: 18.6
    TS%: .520
    RB%: 7.7%
    AST%: 18.1%
    TOV%: 14.9%

So if Jackson can even revert to his form from last season, he's basically what he was in 2003. His points per minute will come down in San Antonio, which will help his true shooting percentage a little bit. He's a slightly better rebounder these days and a much better playmaker.

Here are SJax's numbers from the 2003 playoffs:

    Points per 36 mins: 13.6
    TS%: .529
    RB%: 6.6%
    AST%: 14.1%
    TOV%: 19.0%

It's really not a high bar when hoping SJax can regain his 2003 form. He could regress a little bit from last year and still be in the ballpark.

And on top of that, it's possible he can bring intangibles like toughness and confidence to the table that RJ would never bring.

Yeah, I was talking about the trade deadline.

So, if Kaman or Diaw were to get bought out,
when is that projected to happen?

I want to see the Spurs pick up a big.
