There's NO WAY we can beat this US team. Not only because of the names but also because of the way they are playing.
This is not the old "we can beat all teams without scouting" US team. They understood they needed to spend some resources on studying FIBA rules, officiating and opponents strategy.
Argentina is not winning this game unless a catastrophe occurs.
US team is just TOO good. It's sort of Michael Phelpy or Usain Bolty. Just too good.

WTF are you talking about? This has nothing to do with hating Manu or Argentina, this is a no brainer. Argentina has five or six top talented guys, and a couple of them (Delfino and Prigioni) are very inconsistent. USA has all world players at every position at every depth. They play like team, very unselfish. Nobody, not even world champion Spain, has stayed close to them in the 2nd half. Nobody needs to cheer up Argentina, they are the defending Olympic champions, but nobody has the depth necessary to go 40 minutes with the US team. It's an easy call.

As the game gets closer, I just don't know how I'm supposed to root for Kobe over Ginobili. I can't stand Kobe and he's not even a product of American basketball. He should be playing for the Italian national team.
Maybe if Kobe gets arrested or something and misses the game, then it'll be possible for me to root for the US. Otherwise, I'll have to be a neutral observer.

Okay
All in all americans will be well motivated to crush Argies, and in this turnament I think it is the last chance to beat this USA squad.
In 2000 There were some problems with motivation. Americans were going to nightclubs and staying late having party.
Now it seems like they want to prove they are the best with no contest.
I just wonder for how long they will be willing to stay in that scheudle (NBA + FIBA)
NBA fans pretty much don't even want the NBA players playing in the Olympics...and after the players win gold they will likely lose the desire to keep playing basketball year round.
You see, in my country, playing in the Olympics for basketball players isn't a doorway to being declared a National Hero and becoming wealthy from endorsements...in my country, playing on the Olympic basketball team is a thankless job, that pays no money, garners no respect, no additional fame, and doesn't accomplish anything other than putting a gold medal on your chest.
In my country, playing for the National Basketball team doesn't even get many Americans to root for you...proof in this thread.
Now can you honestly tell me the same is true for Manu and the guys on Team Argentina? Of if they were Poland?
No prestige, no respect, and damn sure no money...is that the way it works in Poland and Argentina with their Olympic Basketball players?
Tell me again who is doing this more for material(and otherwise) gain? Truely, all the NBA players are getting out of this is a gold medal...and literally nothing else. Not even good will from their countrymen...

This is pretty damn true. The US players don't really get anything out of playing in the Olympics. The US media not-so-secretly hopes they lose so that everyone can talk about the failure for a couple weeks non-stop. Basically, the US players are in a lose lose situation. If they win, they were supposed to win. If they lose, they are a group of conceited ballas who disgraced Americans because they didn't have any heart.
A team like Argentina might not specifically be playing for money but that is the end result. If Argentina never busted onto the international scene, players like Nocioni, Herrmann and even Oberto would never have made it to the NBA and wouldn't be making the millions they are making. Argentina winning gold in 2004 probably earned the players in excess of $100 million.

The fact that they are dominating with that chucker tossing up stupid 3 after stupid 3 and getting his overrated defense lit up shows you just how special the players on this team are.

Kind of fail. China is one of the biggest markets for the NBA (if not the biggest). I'm sure Stern really wanted a Team USA like this one playing in Beijing, and Team USA players would love to see their popularity skyrocket in that country.
Of course, the same can be said about the members of Team Argentina. The point is: if you want to be tendencious and suspicious, you'll surely find a way to.

It is definitely charity for them to do it...which is why so many of the best players decline the chance...like they did in 04.
Of course, the same can be said about the members of Team Argentina. The point is: if you want to be tendencious and suspicious, you'll surely find a way to.
I assure you, if you think the Americans get as much benfit from doing this as the Argies do, you are entirely wrong.
The primary reason for doing this is National Prestige within ones own country.
Why don't you conduct a poll and see how many Argies are rooting for Team USA VS how many Americans are rooting for Team Argentina...
Then tell me the benefit is the same.
If you get one Argie rooting for Team USA I will be in shock..
This is why I personally get irate over international posters generalizing my country....we Americans definitely aren't all the same...I remain unconvinced that is true of other posters...except for maybe the French.

me too. i honestly believe this means a whole lot more to Argentina fans than US fans. US fans have the NFL,MLB,NHl,NBA,MMA all these variety of sports to follow and athletes to root for that the basketball olympics means very little to the normal US citizen.
u never see a riot break out on behalf of US fans when we lose. but yet it happens almost reguarly in other countries because thats what they live to see and love. years of dedication for this one moment for many international athletes. US athletes have other endeavors that they live for. an olympic gold medal is just another accomplishment. for the argentinians, thats all there is.

You know no matter what I'll be rooting for Manu. Except seeing the US dominate him would me kinda happy but sad at the same time. It is true that I love Manu and how he plays and there is no way I could personally root for Kobe over Manu.
But this isn't a one on one game. And if Kobe has to go off for 80 for the US to beat the living hell out of Argentina then I'll be happy all day and all night.
However, you can bet your ass I'm not rooting for Oberto. I have he gets posterized left and right and I hope those stupid short nasty jumpers of him clang so much they have to replace the rim at halftime. I hope he gets dunked on and has American nuts hanging in his face so much that he knows what soap Dwight Howard uses.

are you fucking kiddin dude? guys like Herrman,Scola Nocioni, Delfino, and even Fricking Manu Ginobilli were already rich before 2004,most of the guys on that team were already playing in Europe for a long long time.

US 2.5 M p/yr is about 1m Euros/yr,and they pay less taxes in Europe tham in the US,plus most players get a house for free for the time they spend on the town they“re playing for, so yes they could be making more money in Europe.Believe that.

Worst players than Manu and Noc, just to name our best players... are making twice what they are in Europe. Remenber Euro>>>>>Dolar.
Playing in the NBA was never about the money for most international players, it's about playing on the best league in the world.
Ginobili has the NBA to thank for his now World Wide NBA promoted fame. Before he was known in Argentina and Italy.
Now hes known world wide.
Thats another story... and to be fair, the NBA owe players like Manu, Yao, Dirk, Parker, Kirilenko, etc, a lot more than they owe the NBA.
International players of that caliber are amazing publicity for the league, wich the league takes advantage to the fullest.
Is a win-win situation, you make the league better, and more popular than ever world-wide.

If they win, they were supposed to win. If they lose, they are a group of conceited ballas who disgraced Americans because they didn't have any heart.
i think it used to be true. but there are several factors that have changed that-
1) if the olympics were in korea or brazil or italy, it wouldnt have the marketing benefits that it does in china, and im fairly certain that there is a lebron quote along the lines of "i knew i wanted to be in Beijing to fulfill my goal of becoming a global icon".
2) the chance to "redeem" past teams/players will bestow a lot of these guys glory and praise that players like vince carter or gary payton never got for their olympic success. furthermore, for some of these guys, this is the only tournament they have a chance at winning. Kobe bryant hasnt won jack in over 5 years, you think his marketing people are happy about that? (obviously kobe has chances to win a ship next year, but guys like bosh and howard, as young and as good as they are, may never get a chance as good as this)
so i think they are getting something out of it. obviously, they risk more than they stand to gain, but to say they get nothing is like the kid who celebrates every win, then says he wasnt trying when he lost.
as far as argentina, when these guys started playing together, winning tournaments and making the NBA was crazy talk. of course the result of their work was they got paid. but you cant say that they took up the NT for the money. quite the contrary, they probably had to pay for their own expenses as u-17 players in a country that had no bball history. now that they paved that road, the argentine basketball program is getting money and kids are thinking "hmm, those NBA contracts look a lot better than serie A or la liga." so we will see more talent, but also, more greed and less sacrifice.
the only way for an American to understand what this argie basketball team means to us, is for the US to have a soccer team beat Brazil, Italy and Germany on their way to World Cups, Olympic golds, and the core of that team featuring in dominant clubs like Milan and Barca.
and for those that might say "we would win in soccer if we tried/cared", well, i remember many concerted efforts to turn the US into a soccer power, and they've yet to produce a single first class player. (though they have had some results, i'll give you that)
--
and finally, a lot people are saying "this is all argentina has." Argentina has a lot of good sport success, from rugby to tennis to yachting to soccer to field hockey and on and on. this basketball team is just different, precisely because no one ever imagined we could be good at it.

I love it, and if we were ever to beat a Brazil or Argentina in the WC I'd be ecstatic but I doubt the rest of the country would share my sentiments. You don't understand the United States. It's just not a soccer nation. We beat Portugal in 02 and it didn't do all that much for the sport.
I understand you're proud of your team. Thats fine. But many Argentinians have grown cocky and have decided that my countries team has no heart. Well, my no heart team is going to beat the ever living crap out of Argentina tomorrow and konck you back down to your rightful place in the basketball hierarchy: Below - with everyone else - the United States.

it is arrogant to attribute a personal preference to an entire group of people, particularly when it is easy to show that there are americans that care about soccer (hence, the existence of US soccer with both men and womens NT, the MLS, united leagues, WC94 attendance figures, etc.)
though im pretty sure chump was just kidding.

Thats not arrogant. And please, saying "typical american arrogance" is a crock of shit to begin with. Its fucking ironic because its usually an incredibly ironic thing to say. What Chump said is correct. You guys simply don't understand how low soccer is on the professional sports totem pole here.

beating portugal is akin to beating puerto rico in basketball. a good team, but not a power by any means. portugal has won one eurocup, and that was about 40 years ago.
i grew up in the US, and lived there off and on for 40% of my life. two of my brothers are american born. i played baseball and football and basketball and soccer in public and private schools, in central park in NYC and intramurals in california and think i have a pretty good understanding of how most americans view sports (of course, it varies a lot from state to state and class level). most americans dont care about soccer. but there are many that do, just like there are "many" argentines grown cocky with the bball team. there are also many saying we dont stand a chance. the way that you choose which group outnumbers the other tells me all i need to know- you're just looking for a fight, a chance to talk trash. that wont change the fact that history books will show, that from 2002-2006, the dominant team in basketball wasnt team USA, it was argentina. when the US does the same in a team sport that other people care about- like soccer or rugby- then i might feel bad about being "below you"

Yes but when you have had a little World Cup success as the US has had, beating Portugal is a big deal. They were fairly well ranked at the time, not the best but they were favored in the match.

Moment of truth for basketball's Team USA
The U.S., which faces Argentina next, is eager to redeem itself after the disappointment of the 2004 Athens Olympics. It would serve the team well to remember its comeuppance lessons.
By Mike Downey, Chicago Tribune
BEIJING -- In 1936, our basketball team kicked some serious Olympic butt.
A guy named Joe Fortenberry scored eight points in the gold-medal game. So did Canada.
Final score: USA 19, Canada 8.
After that, Canucks stuck pretty much to pucks.
We thought we were pretty hot stuff. But we got beat in 1972. (OK, so the German clock-keeper let the Russians rob us.) Then we lost again in 1988. (Danny Manning and David Robinson notwithstanding.)
So we sent for the big guns. Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley . . . we rounded up every big-time basketball player we could think of except Meadowlark Lemon.
This strategy succeeded. We beat Cuba by 79 points. I think all five Cubans smoked cigars while they played.
We also beat Angola. I bet you can still remember where you were on that 1992 day when the news came that we beat Angola in a game of basketball. I mean, be still my heart.
We got pretty cocky again.
Comeuppance came in 2004. We were floored. We got Uncle Sam's hat handed to us.
Our basketball team went to Greece and hit the skids. Our defense had more holes than the Acropolis. I took one look at our offense and did exactly what Meryl Streep did years later when she got to Greece to make a movie. I shouted out: "Mamma mia!"
Our punks stunk.
I saw them take the court and said, wow, check out these names: Allen Iverson! Stephon Marbury! LeBron James! Tim Duncan!
About a week later, the only thing I wanted to check out was out of my hotel.
Jason Kidd of our 2008 team here in Beijing remembers the feeling pretty well.
"I stopped watching after we lost to Italy," he said.
Unfortunately, the feeling is about all Kidd remembers well. We didn't play Italy that year.
We did play Puerto Rico.
I always assumed we could beat Puerto Rico in basketball with any five guys of ours in shorts. I thought a Kansas Jayhawks junior-varsity could beat those guys. I felt we could win with Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and the cast of "White Men Can't Jump."
Puerto Rico pounded us.
We lost by 19. We couldn't have made a shot that day if the Puerto Rican kids had left the gym and gone for a swim.
I'll never forget Julio Toro, the coach, saying how proud he was to have his Puerto Rico team beat "the big colossal from the North."
"I'm humiliated," said our coach, Larry Brown. I think he immediately began looking into other job offers from Cuba and Angola.
Well, we got by Greece, but by only six points and only because Lamar Odom blocked a last-minute shot by the immortal Dimitris Papanikolaou.
And we edged Australia, even though we were behind late in the game.
Then we lost to Lithuania, mainly because the great Iverson and Marbury and James and Duncan couldn't hold the immortal Sarunas Jasikevicius under 28 points.
Everybody was humiliated. I was humiliated. Larry Brown was re-humiliated.
"We beat the States," yawned Jasikevicius. "So what?"
The beatings didn't end there. Argentina also took a basketball net and tied up our arms and legs the way gauchos do rodeo calves.
I doubt our NBA stars could have defeated a team made up of any three Argentines, including descendants of Eva Peron. I doubt we could have beaten a France team that included Tony Parker and Eva Longoria. I doubt we could have beaten a Canada team that included Canadians.
Which brings us to Beijing.
It is payback time. Friday will be the night the United States of America, for which it stands, gets to see whether we once again get to be Best of the Best or whether we get to continue to be the laughingstock of Buenos Aires.
"We want to play the best, the defending champs," Kobe Bryant said before it was clear whether Team USA would meet Argentina or Greece.
"We ain't letting anyone down this time," teammate Carmelo Anthony said.
"If we don't treat every game as our last, we could lose," said teammate James.
Well said, fellas.
America's team rides again!
As for South America's team, aw, well, madre mio, do those poor guys even have a chance?
"We know they're by far the best team," poor-mouthed Manu Ginobili, the wild San Antonio Spur of the Pampas. "We know we'll have to play a perfect game and that's probably not enough. They'll have to play badly."
Yeah, right.
That's what Puerto Rico thought.

I bet you Chump was 100% serious in that post. If Chump was arrogant by saying what he did, then you were arrogant in the post he replied to because while you took a different side of things you said the same type of things:
the only way for an American to understand what this argie basketball team means to us, is for the US to have a soccer team beat Brazil, Italy and Germany on their way to World Cups, Olympic golds, and the core of that team featuring in dominant clubs like Milan and Barca.
So you say we'd care and Chump says we wouldn't. Yet because Chump is in disagreement then it is arrogant. Ok.
how much did the LA galaxy pay for a washed up david beckham? 250M? for a sport that you have no success at and no interest in, that's a high price tag. If business ventures were a signal of interest you might have a point. Sadly, theirs a reason you haven't seen anymore of those contracts. It was a boondoggle and did not revolutionize interest in the sport in America anymore than any of past events which were supposed to do the same: Pele playing here, World Cup held here, 02 World Cup for example. The attendence, TV ratings, and merchendise sales of MLS still lag far behind every other major sport in the United States so whether or not internet traffic on a board (which I'm not even sure you're correct on - unlesss you have inside information on numbers for those sites you're basicaly pulling shit out of your ass) the fact is that the money isn't there and that is a far better indicator of true interest by the American public.
As for your last statement, no one was ever arguing that the there is zero interset of Soccer in America and no one denies that is has grown in recent memory. What was challenged was your asseration that the US winning against a Brazil or Argentina in soccer on a big stage would illict the same type of response Argentina's success on the basketball court did.

In looking at the schedule, it appears that the only thing keeping NBC standard from showing the game live is the "Today" show doesn't end until 10:00 AM.
I can't wait for this, hopefully TV over here shows the whole thing.
I don't really know who to root for. USA is and always has been the best basketballing country in the world, despite what the Olympic and World Champ results say. Them winning gold seems right. Plus, I like the way they are playing, very entertaining, but solid fundamental basketball.
Argentina are so fun to watch, and they have Manu. One of the best true teams I've seen in my time.
I don't really care who wins, but I think US will. I expect that Argentina will put in a very good effort, and I think a lot here are underating them and there chances. Who knows though, USA could potentially win by 40. Tough game to guess a margin really.

I find it very depressing that so many so-called Spurs fans here are behaving in such a fashion. The Olympics are supposed to bring people together, not tear them apart. I think Spurs fans in the United States should be grateful that two of their best players are from other countries because it brings new culture, experiences, fans, and attention to the team. Conversely I think Argentine Manu fans and French Tony fans should realize how fortunate they are that their favorite players wound up on a team with a legendary player like Duncan and a great coach like Pop. The relationship has worked beautifully for all involved.
Personally, I think it would be a lot more boring to follow the team if all their players looked the same and came from the same country. I like variety and I like that we have fans from all over. I kinda wish we still had Beno and Rasho, not because they were all that good as players, but they brought over another segment of fans to Spurstalk.
The majority of Spurstalk might be Americans, but I would hope that as far as basketball goes we're Spurs fans first, so I don't - and will not - understand all this animosity and hatred for a team with two Spurs on it and all this passionate support and trashtalking for a team with no Spurs, and in a few cases players whom we flat out don't like in the NBA, like Kobe, Carmelo and Jason Kidd.
In fact, Anthony in particular is behaving every bit the ugly American that rubs so many people the wrong way. Look at this quote that he gave to Chris Sheridan:
"I can't wait. I can't wait to get over that hump," Carmelo Anthony said. "These last two games, there's no reason to hold anything back. To be a champion you have to beat a champion. They still have the gold medal, no matter who won the world championship in '06. We have to go out there and take that from them."
Take what from them? Their gold medals? Like go into their homes in Argentina and steal them? They give out new medals every Olympics, dude. No matter what happens tomorrow, they'll keep their '04 ones.
Also, on SportsCenter recently, I heard him say, "After we win the gold nobody will remember what happened in '04."
Wrong. I will remember. I will always remember and I'm sure many others will as well. One loss doesn't take away from a previous win. I think it's pretty arrogant for Anthony to assume that the Argentine players or people will feel any less proud of their accomplishments in '04 regardless of what happens in '08. But I guess this is a typical "what have you done for me lately" mentality. A lot of people on the board have it as well. If a player has a bad playoff series then all the great ones from before are forgotten.
Anyway, I ask again. This brawling, flagrant fouling, drunk-driving, stop-snitchin' advocating jackass is what you have forsaken Manu for? Just because he happens to be born in Baltimore rather than Bahia Blanca?
Jeffrey Dahmer is American, but I wouldn't root for him against Kobayashi in a hot dog eating contest either.
I find the comments on these boards troubling for many reasons but most of all I'm surprised why some posters here care at all in the first place. So many of you shared TPark and ChumpDumper's sentiments that the Olympics don't matter, that's it's a meaningless exhibition, that basketball matters only in the context of how it pertains to the Spurs. They bashed Manu repeatedly for wanting to play in the Olympics and called him selfish for doing so, because he'd be doing it - and I repeat - for a cause they didn't care about.
But now it's August 20 and all of a sudden all of these people do care. What changed? Are you all rooting against Ginobili now just out of spite? What would these boards be like if Argentina lost to Greece a couple days ago or if Australia upset the U.S.?
No matter what happens tomorrow, come October Manu and Oberto will be on the Spurs and the 12 guys on the U.S. team will be on teams looking to beat the Spurs. I don't understand how so many people here will seamlessly go back to rooting for and supporting players for whom they wished nothing but ill will this whole offseason and vice versa for their superstar opponents.
No true Spurs fan should ever root for a team with Manu and Fab on it to get their asses kicked just like no Argentine would ever root for the Spurs to lose a game. I cannot fathom how anyone could even contemplate such a thing. I'm not the world's biggest Parker fan but I certainly wouldn't root against France against the U.S. if he's playing for them and no Spur is on the U.S. side. At the end of the day it's the player we see 8 months a year, not a national uniform, and I don't know about all of you, but I'd like our Spurs players to be happy, in good spirits, confident and successful, in all their competitions and endeavors.

The U.S. will not be an international soccer threat until they can produce a world-class striker and a world-class playmaker. Young Jozy Altidore has the potential to be the former, and it's a good sign that at 19 he's already playing for Villarreal. But I still don't see that classic #10 on the U.S. team.

I suggest you give up sports and try Opera...or flower growing. Seriously...that was the biggest crock of shit I've ever read. Why even bother watching competition? The very nature of it is for someone to beat someone else...
Vince Lombardi would have ripped off your head shat down the bloody stump. At the very least...you'd have been cut.
Shawn Johnson has more balls than you. Pick a side...for you see, when trying to be a fan of everything, you become a fan of nothing.

How is it arrogant to display a personal preference? In fact its fucking arrogant to suggest that we have to like what you like or its arrogant. Not only that its also fucking stupid.
If you don't understand what arrogant means then maybe you shouldn't use the word.
Is not... anyone can say football (soccer for you) sucks and is boring. Saying thats "American arrogance" is stupid imo.
After all, I consider your football (American football for us), to be boring as hell and gay compared to Rugby (real man sport). That doesn't make me arrogant or anything, is just my opinion.
PS - Pay attention bdictjames - THIS post is an example of American arrogance.
I have family in the States and I know most of what you say is true... but Team USA will probably destroy Argentina not because they have a lot of heart (not saying they don't), but because they have a far superior team in this games.
I hope Manu plays awesome, stays healthy, and I hope the game is somehow close.
Ideally, I want the game to be a nail biter with Kobe propelling the U.S. team to victory. Manu will be pissed off at Kobe and tear up the Lakers in the NBA season.

You are wrong. I am as true and loyal of a Spurs fan as there is on this board and have been longer than most here and I am rooting for the US. I don't wish ill on Manu or Oberto but I root for my country's team. Its not malicious or nasty its just basketball. Take issue with individual comments if you wish but there is nothing wrong with rooting for one's national team and doing so doesn't make me or anyone else any less of Spurs fan.
Harry Callahan
08-22-2008, 06:48 AM
I would not take any joy in Manu and Oberto's team getting blown out. Especially when the opponent has dirtbags like Carmello Anthony. Anthony should be happy he is getting to ride the coattails of other players.
Anthony was a disgrace in Athens in 04, and he does not deserve the Gold Medal he will probably get.

I'm happy the US are kicking the shit out of Argentina; Yes. I can't do anything about Manu's ankle. I hope its not serious but I don't know what you want from me. I can't fly to Beijing and give him a foot rub. I bet he goes back into the game.

can someone provide a link to the game?
Go to www.rojadirecta.com, and look for the Arg-US game. Choose the FLUTV link.
Manu's ankle did not look like it got twisted very bad. Probably just a tweak.
And a good excuse to sit out this debacle.

Laugh it up. If you don't want Manu trade him to the Lakers. Then laugh it up when the Spurs don't even make the playoffs.
