Great game, great players. Deserved victory. USA should build on that in the future.
Compared to 2004, they talked a lot more to eachother, encouraged eachother, gave their all for eachother.

Who says that NBA players don't care about this? Look at these guys. I'm so tired of the shit where people complain that they can't root for Kobe or Melo. Thats bullshit. Meh. The US didn't really re-establish itself as the basketball power. Being in a close game against a team without arguably their best player isn't a way to close these Olympics out. They needed a 30 point blowout to shut up the critics and reclaim their past glory.
Now the rest of the world can say that if the US didn't knock down more threes than usual, didn't get a favorable whistle at some points of the game and had to go against a squad that wasn't starting a prepubescent point guard, it would have been totally different.
Nice win but the US of A is about domination ... not simply winning.

I think the days of the USA dominating are over. The players and coaches know it. It's time fans know it now too.

USA fucked around too much in this game. They just had to find out if they could flip the switch when it got close so there would be no question about if they could win a close one...everybody already knew they could dominate, so not much would have been gained by them doing so.
They wanted it close to prove they could do it, at any point they wanted, they wanted Spain to have a chance to take it, to give them a reason to fight their hardest at the end.
Made for a better finish but the cloeseness of this game was artificially created by the players...

I could have gone outside and took a piss while that one guy was allowed to spot up for a 3 . Then they did it again on the same posession...

False...dominating would have proved nothing., especially since they just did that to this team a few games ago. Team USA, the players, wanted Spain to have a chance at the end...so there would be no question about their ability to beat a team with a fighting chance at the end.
That question was answered...no one can question their heart now...they dangled it right in front of Spain's face and gave them a chance to take it.
And Spain could not do it...

False...dominating would have proved nothing., especially since they just did to this team a few games ago.

Seriously though, I hope the US retires on top. Let college players participate again. You reclaimed gold now go out on top. Doing this all over again won't be nearly as easy. This team wanted revenge. In four years it'll be back to boredom.
I think you're wrong. I think if you look at how those players reacted it means something to them and I think in the future we'll probably field even better teams.
The truth is that while this team was better, it wasn't the best we could have put on the court. If they had been able to get a Duncan or Amare to go and didn't take Jason Kidd then the team would have been even stronger.
If in four years we end up taking guys like Oden (if he pans out), Amare, Doug West and a lot of the same guards (Wade - Lebron - Melo - Paul - Dwill will all be in their primes) then I could easily see this team being stronger.

USA had nothing on D. Horrible 3-point defense, too much gambling for steals, and no answer inside with Pau and Rudy's runners.
Right....Team USA sucked ass in this game...to say they played bad D would be misleading...they played virtually no D..especially when they got a decent lead. But I don't think they wanted to blow Spain out...because then everyone would have said it was all talent and no heart...now they can't..Spain had every chance to take it from them at a point and with a close enough score to where heart made the difference...and Spain didn't have the heart to take it from them.

Example:
I could have gone outside and took a piss while that one guy was allowed to spot up for a 3 . Then they did it again on the same posession...
One of the biggest BULLSHIT I ever read.

Spain has more talent then you're giving them credit for. Also, in any given game a few players can play stronger than usual but that doesn't mean they'll do it on a regular basis. I seriously doubt that Spain would put up 2 of these type of games if the teams played 10.
The USA figured out a lot about the international game this time around as well. This was a huge learning experience for them. While they definetly had the talent edge, a lot of the other factors were playing against them.

What matters is if those players care enough about winning. This team cared because they were embarrassed the last three times in international competition. Now that they are back on top, I don't see how they are going to muster up the drive to want to do it again.

I know right now all the USA fans are going crazy for the victory, to be honest I'm a US citizen who lives in SA who was rooting for Argentina in 04 and 08 and it has nothing about being unpatriotic, it is just I hate how the team selection process is they don't put together fundamental teams anymore just flashy players, I mean look at the USA Women's team, how do you not select Becky Hammon as one of your PG (hello runner up to WNBA MVP) that doesn't make me less of an American but off that subject because it goes down a bad road in this forum
Let me say this Team USA did play as a team in these Olympics, they had chemistry and still they were tested by 3 or more teams throughout the tournament: Lithuania, Greece, Argentina, and Spain even when they played their best basketball probably within the last 12 years (depending on 1996 or 2000 teams) so I will repeat and you would have to be ignorant not to see this in the near future:
I think as more international players join the nba and then play in the Olympics for their respective teams we will see multiple foreign teams with multiple NBA players on them and the gap will be closed (if not already) forever and each olympics will be a question mark as to who wins the gold

They could have been much better inside. If this team had Doug West instead of Carmelo playing power forward they would have done much better. If this team didn't play Jason Kidd a single minute they would have been much better.

I think people see the names on this team and don't realize that they didn't play their best ball a lot of the time. Anytime Kidd was on the court they really did play handicapped. Kobe played really poorly for much of the tournament and made a lot of bad decisions. Howard was a liability at times if he had a sizeable opponent. At many points Wade, Lebron, Paul, Bosh and Dwill carried this team in one way or another.
I think they were great, but there's no question in my mind they could have been better. A lot of that is on Coach K. Making JKidd a starter was a bad decision and its one that should have been changed early on. I don't think they felt enough pressure to do that but that doesn't change that Jason Kidd was easily the worst player for this team and got a good deal of minutes. He probably did the best he could with the bigs he had to work with, and I don't know if he coudl really have benched Kobe more because he's Kobe, but I definetly see things that could have been done better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Krzyzewski
Early years
Krzyzewski, the son of Polish immigrants, attended Weber High School in Chicago, Illinois before it became a middle school. He then attended The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and played basketball while training to become an officer in the Army. He was captain of the Army basketball team in his senior season, 1968-69, leading his team to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) at Madison Square Garden in New York City. From 1969-74, Krzyzewski served in the Army and directed service teams for three years and then followed that up with two years as head coach of the U.S. Military Academy Prep School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
In 1974, he resigned from the Army having attained the rank of captain. Bob Knight, his former coach at Army, offered Krzyzewski, then 26 years old, a graduate assistant position at Indiana University. That 1975 squad posted an 18-0 Big Ten mark and a 31-1 overall record.
Prior to joining the Duke program, Krzyzewski spent five years building the program at his alma mater in West Point. He led the Black Knights to one NIT berth and left with a five-year record of 73-59 (.553).
Krzyzewski is a devout Roman Catholic. He is involved in fundraising for Catholic charitable organizations in North Carolina, including Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

WTF LJ. You're a Spurs fan and you're acting like being a better team isn't more valuable than raw talent? For the most part this Spain team has played together for quite a bit of time. Not only that but their games are much better suited to the international rules. That goes a bit of the way to making up for the talent disparity. The Spurs never face a team where Tim Duncan is worse than the other team's worse player. I wanted the US to destroy Spain. How it ended up, the world is still confident they can catch beat the US. The world knows you can have like 5% of the talent and still beat the US.
Again, the US isn't simply about winning. The US is about domination :smokin
Well, unless anyone believes whottt's scenario of the US tanking :rollin

The best player on Spain wouldn't have made the US team. In this game they had one NBA All-Star (P. Gasol), two NBA washouts (Navarro and Lopez) and young future NBA talent (Fernandez, M. Gasol and Rubio). That's decently talented but less talent than Argentina and not too far away from a team like Lithuania.
Of the top 100 basketball players in the world, Spain had one player.
That I agree with.
The gold medal game was USA vs Argentina
I am surprised by this reactions. If Kobe would have not put two of his last 3s in (what could easily happen) and Spain put just one more....
I still thin it was a great finals.
Congrats to USA.

We were missing a dominant big man. If we had that big man in the paint, this would have been a 20-30 point blowout. Too many rebounds and easy layups for Spain.

Well the US was pretty unstopable the entire game. I know the margin of victory really wasn't that big, but I don't believe they ever were really in danger of losing either. I know thats tough to say when Spain got it so close, but Spain hit some amazing shots. The last few minutes of the game the USA really clamped down on that hard and it was evident.

US hoops back on top, beats Spain for gold medal
By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer 21 minutes ago
BEIJING (AP)—Order is restored in international basketball. The United States is back on top, but not by that much anymore.
Culminating a three-year mission to end years of embarrassment, the U.S. Olympic team survived a huge challenge from Spain, winning 118-107 Sunday in the gold-medal game.
After overwhelming everyone for seven games, the Americans led by only four points with under 21/2 minutes to play. Then the U.S. proved it could handle a close game that seemed would never come in Beijing.
Their prize: the first U.S. gold medal since the 2000 Olympics.
Argentina won the bronze with an 87-75 victory against Lithuania.
Dwyane Wade scored 27 points for the Americans, who found a much gamer Spanish team than the one it humiliated by 37 points earlier in the tournament. Kobe Bryant added 20 points.
In a game so void of defense that it felt more like an NBA All-Star game than one with a title at stake, the Americans had too much offense down the stretch. Bryant converted a clutch four-point play with 3:10 remaining, holding his finger to his lips to quiet the rowdy Spanish crowd behind the basket.
Wade added another 3-pointer that made it 111-104 with just over 2 minutes left, and only then could the Americans relax a little.
They began to celebrate during a break after some technical fouls on Spain with 26 seconds left, then celebrated at midcourt when it was over with “Born in the USA” blaring over the arena’s speakers.
Nobody else had been close to the Americans in Beijing. This team’s only Olympic competition had been history, in a Dream matchup with guys named Jordan, Magic, Bird and the rest of the U.S. team that dominated the Barcelona Games in 1992.
Forget comparisons to those guys. The Americans were lucky to be better than Spain on Sunday.
Rudy Fernandez scored 22 points and Pau Gasol had 21 for the Spanish, the reigning world champions who were hoping to win their first Olympic gold.
U.S. players appreciated the game Spain gave them. After the contest they hugged the Spanish players. Bryant had an especially long embrace for Gasol, patting his Los Angeles Lakers teammate on the back.
Seeming to appreciate the moment, after congratulating Spain, the team joined in a circle, jumping up and down at center court and waving triumphantly to the crowd as coach Mike Krzyzewski applauded on the sidelines.
The Americans had won their first seven games by 30.3 points, including a 119-82 rout of Spain. But they never had control of this game, giving up open looks from the perimeter and plenty of points in the paint.
But Bryant, who waited so long to finally wear the red, white and blue, hit two 3-pointers in a big fourth quarter to add the gold medal to the only piece of hoops hardware he didn’t already own. The NBA MVP pounded his hands toward the floor in celebration at the end.
LeBron James scored 14 points, while Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul had 13 apiece for the Americans, who had won bronze medals in their last two international events, the 2004 Olympics and ‘06 world championships.
The U.S. started planning for this game after that first event, the low point in its hoops history, following a sixth-place flop two years earlier in the world championships. Jerry Colangelo was given control of USA Basketball and constructed a national team program in 2006, requiring those who wanted to play to commit to three years.
He got Bryant and James quickly on board and landed almost everyone else he asked for, finding a group of NBA stars eager to give up their summer to get back what they felt belonged to their country.
And he needed all of them against a Spain team that on this day would have likely beaten any other recent U.S. squad.
Jason Kidd ran his record to 56-0 in senior international play and collected another gold to place alongside the one he earned in 2000, becoming the 13th U.S. player with multiple golds.
That elite list, which includes Michael Jordan and seven other Dream Teamers, could grow in 2012. Paul and Dwight Howard said they would be in London if asked, and perhaps half this team could join them.
James ran out for pregame warmups with his finger in the air, already believing the U.S. was No. 1. But even though the Americans were shooting better than 70 percent for most of the first half, it would take a long time to prove it.
James and Bryant were both on the bench after picking up two fouls in the first 31/2 minutes, and though Wade came in and picked up their scoring load, the U.S. reserves couldn’t open their usual cushion.
Spain hit seven of its first nine shots, leading for much of the first quarter. A quick burst of 10 points by James and Wade had the U.S. advantage up to 14 points with 4 minutes left in the half, but Spain chipped away and trailed only 69-61 at the break.
Spain was within four on a number of occasions in the third, and Fernandez’s 3-pointer cut it down to 91-89 with 8:13 remaining. Bryant answered with a bucket, later added a 3, and things seemed safe when James scored to make it 103-92.
Spain made one last push to close within 108-104 on Carlos Jimenez’s 3-pointer, but Wade hit one on the other end, and the final score became lopsided when the Americans hit a bunch of free throws after the Spanish became frustrated and were called for the technicals.

That's exactly my point...it takes a hell of a lot more confidence in yourself to let someone get close at the very end, when you can lose everything, than it does to blow them out, especially if you already know you can blow them out....because it absolutely can bite you in the ass and get out of your control, and make you feel like a complete idiot.
And that's exactly why they did it, they wanted that pressure in this game...they wanted to be challenged at the end.

I don't want to call you stupid for your suspects, but I really think you are wrong on this one.
I think not much.
The truth is that most people don't have a good image of steroids. If they are used "right" they cause minor damage if any.

It is an exhibition
Your getting things confused and not suprising.
Fuck it I don't care if you guys can't figure out the difference between me not wanting Ginobili to play in it, and me rooting for USA then back away from the computer.
oh i understand the difference. the difference is that you think the spurs own manu, so for him it is a BS exhibition, but at the same time you are a patriot, so when your country wins you are "on top of the world", even though you won an "exhibition". In other words, when it suits your club interest it is meaningless, but when it suits your national interests its meaningful.
epitome of selfish, indeed.

You can´t be serious...

A lot of posters here are like that. They don't want any Spurs internationally players playing in the offseason, but they still want Team USA to dominate with NBA players.
I don't really get it. If you can't respect Tony and Manu's decisions to play, then you shouldn't support LeBron, Kobe and the rest of the American NBA players playing.

I could are less they are playing because they play for other teams and thats their team's problem.
Im rooting for the TEAM, not the players.

You can´t be serious...
Tell me something...how do you know giving someone a chance to eat you at something, someone either you think you can beat because you are so much better at something than they are, or because you are really good at something and get bored, or perhaps you do it just because you want to see how you will handle the pressure...
How do you know what happens when you try that?
You know what happens because you have tried it before. Of course you have, everyone has...
Usually not the ultimate pressure situation...but then again, you aren't Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade or Lebron James...on the same team.
That is exactly what Team USA did in this game. I mean they obviously stopped playing defense at points in that game.
Ask yourself this...if Gregg Poppovich had been coaching this game...how many of those guys would have been left on the floor tonight based on their defensive play? None of them..that's how many.
How about a final comment about the actual game before bedtime?
If there were any way to match this Spanish team up against the 06-07 Spurs, I'd bet the rent money that the Spurs would kick their asses. The score might be more like 81-70, but the outcome would be the same.
Spain played an inspired game tonight. The Redeem Team's defense sucked, and we had 2 players on the bench within minutes with foul trouble. All of which contributed to the game being as close as it was. But I still say there's one more thing. Bring that same Spanish team over here and let them play the Redeem team under NBA rules, and see how close the game is at the end.
I agree with Tim... FIBA sucks. Let em come play Big Boys' Rules and then we'll talk about how the Euros have "caught up".

thank you kori. I know Tpark respects you, and hopefully that will be enough to make him understand.
and to be honest... i do understand how Tpark feels. In soccer, NT players can sometimes miss important club games, something that doesnt happen in basketball, and which can really hurt the team you root for- so i've been in that situation where the NT conflicts with your club, and you get angry or worry about it. What pisses me off is that he thinks that his feelings give him a right to insult someone else, in this case, a player who has shown on multiple occasions that he will sacrifice his body for his team.
its a case of "hate the game, not the player" or however the hell that phrase goes

IMO Spain allowed americans to win.
They had to do it acually, just for good of basketball itself. To keep americans on top. Americans gives you more popularity, that global bball can gain.
