View Full Version : so my wife finally got going as a teacher

well, my significant other finally got into the teaching ranks out at
a high school in the southern parts of SA. woo hoo.
Lemme tell ya though.......however bad you have heard that teachers have it,
go ahead and multiply that by 20 and you have an idea of what she's
gone through.
Forget the kids that get ready to throw down right there in the
classroom on a daily basis or the ones that drop F bombs, and when she
tells them to cut it out, they drop 1000 more.....
she got to her class room and had to bring in her own desk, desk
chair, waste baskets and yes, even her own chalk board eraser.
oh, and the intercom that is supposed to page the adminstrative
offices in case of an emergency.......she doesn't have one...
it's so bad, it's almost hilarious.
oh, almost forgot the 7am - 10pm days she has put in so far.

As thankless as teaching is, you still get the three month vacation. $43,000 for 9 months isn't too bad if she's smart enough to make the kids do the grading on everything but the exams.

Congrats, my wife just got her certification for Special Ed, she didn't want to do HS so she was holding out. Now, today, she just accepted a job doing CPS. My wife has a huge heart, don't know how long that will last.

TX is probably one of the few states that's hiring teachers all the time...at least NISD is since a new school opens every other day.
Isn't CA cutting a bunch of programs and laying off teachers? My B-I-L's girlfriend just got her degree to teach and her 1st year she has to teach in East LA or some area like that (something to do with where she got her degree. I think it was Cal State DH and the job placement you have to do).

Michigan has like 5 of the top teaching programs in the country - put a surplus of well-qualified teachers together with the 9% unemployment rate here and crap economy, and you get a whole lot of unemployed teachers. There are a couple people in my information science program getting their masters in library science so they can have other career options.

Teaching is a tough job and you're not paid all that much ... but you can take a good deal of the summer off, the benefits are better than you're going to see in other jobs paying similar amounts, there is still a retirement package (again unlike similar-paying jobs), and you're not likely to have your job outsourced to Bangalore.
But I can't see doing HS in an urban district no matter what. All the best and thank her for her service.

One of my best friends teaches middle school math, and I have heard some crazy, crazy stories from him. He's an amazing teacher, though - he does it because that's what he really feels called to do and that it makes a difference, and 70% of his kids in his TAKS math class (who had failed the year before) passed this year. As horrible as the kids can be, though, I've heard worse stories about the administrative bullshit he's had to go through. No one wants to make it easier for you.

No they don't.
In most districts, librarians and counselors (who must have a master's) get paid on the same salary scale as a teacher with a master's degree- except for circumstances where they work a longer school year so they make more. And a master's is only worth about $1000 more per year.

School librarians usually get paid more than just a teacher with a masters - especially if they have media training. School media specialists here in MI can make upwards of $55k/y, and that's not really unusual for urban districts.

for those that got a somewhat negative perception of teaching from what I originally posted, just wanted to throw out a two-month-in update....
now that's she's shown that she's gonna stay awhile, she has gotten more and more supplies, tools, ideas, etc to help make her life more pleasant.
She also finally has all the finalized rosters that come equipped with parent phone numbers to which she has taken the time to call all the jerky students parents and discussed their behaviors.
(Listening to these conversations with some of these parents has been disheartening and disgusting in some instances. How parents take their kids' side or make excuses for them in these situations is beyond me.)
Many of the rotten eggs have removed themselves from class due to their excessive absences and some have been removed due to their behavior, so she is actually getting some production out of them and many that were borderline have now turned away from the darkside and are enjoying the class.
She is now loving what she is doing and feels she is in the right place at the right time.
Life be good in the Blake household.
Thanks for all the words of encouragement........I passed them along.

I think a student's bad behavior in school needs to be dealt with and begins at home. Now I know that not all parents can control their kids behavior in school but I don't expect teachers to have to spend time disciplining when they are teaching. Proper respect for teachers begins at home.

They do typically work that many hours when they first start out because they have to develop their entire curriculum, take longer grading because it's new to them, etc.
Once they have a few years under their belt, that number drops significantly for most.

can't give you an exact minute by minute breakdown, but there are plenty of incidentals that add up that you don't realize that you don't expect.
I've gone and helped her do some things in the classroom myself on Saturday such as setting up a power point projector, hanging up posters, decorations.

and not to fall in love
and to find a girl for you

yeah...i guess i'm just jealous about the summer months. i'll probably never take a real vacation during those months because that's our busy time.
anyway, a friend of mine in his late 20's just started teaching 3rd grade and he says it's crazy tough...i guess it's hard to understand unless you experience it first hand...if she can handle it and likes it i'm glad it's working out for ya'll...i'm really interested in seeing how she likes the extended time off during the summer and around christmas, what is that like 3 weeks?
if you think about it, they get the 2 1/2 summer months, 1 week thanksgiving, 2 weeks Christmas, 1 week spring break, and then 9 days of personal/sick leave......that's closer to 4 months off during the year.......definitely a perk.....
I also think that some teachers work a lot harder than others depending not just on the grade level, but also the content area.

I agree. Kids don't fear time-outs or suspensions.....
they fear the paddle/ruler/hitstick/belt/twig/etc

my mom mostly taught English in a private school, so her work load was a little lighter, but there were weeks that she had tons of papers to read and grade.
Perfect example-- do people realize how long it takes to read and grade 150 essays- written by Freshmen!

Take away the cell phones, video games, computers, cars. That will get their attention.

Nothing cringier than a guy who announces he's a cuck and then sticks around for max humiliation.

Dude, are you as disgusted with the WWE as I am? We fast forward about 70% of it now, and it's getting worst.
Come on AEW.

Haven't watched in years.. I just read articles bashing it. The reunion shit was the same rehashed garbage they've done like 4 times in the last 5 years

Haven't seen that yet, we save RAW/Smack and New Japan for the weekend. I love the biz but as you said more or less it's really sucking now,

Extreme Rules was a very good show til the shit Lesnar ending. EVERY match was good to great, sans the chicks.
Things are about to get real interesting. Vince gave Paul Heyman and Bischoff real, actual power to run each brand as they see fit so long as long as ran by Vince. Using more foul language and roughing up broads again...it's got no choice but to change.
And if AEW keeps doing the dumb shit like having quadraplegics in battle royals or the stupid ass Hadoken, Chikara nonsense for the indy fanboys, they're going to lose this fight fast. Already bad enough the Young Bucks are going to get tumors from all the thigh slapping they do...and Cody's ego needs walking back a bit, you can already see it growing.
