The Pats were banged up as hell and still looked like they were going to win. The same old Jets almost blew the big lead in the 2nd half, and the same old Pats came back poised and almost won the game. NE was extremely short-handed, but damn it still feels good the Jets finally beat them

I thought it was pretty pathetic of NE to piss away that sick touchdown that Randy Moss caught at the end of regulation by letting Favre throw pass after pass to Keller for first downs. Didn't they sack him twice and have the Jets pinned deep near their end zone with a 3rd and 25 or something? That was a really poor effort by their defense.

Another thing NE shot themselves in the foot with by losing this game, other than the division lead, is that Indy now owns a tiebreaker over them if the Pats can't regain the lead in the AFC East. That's if the Colts win on Sunday but I really fucking doubt Sage Rosenfels has gotten over the mindfuck that happened to him when he choked against the Colts earlier this year.

What part don't you like? It's been done that way forever, which is one reason I like it. I seem to recall that statistically the team that wins the toss doesn't necessarily win the game more often. The deferring option or giving the home team some extra advantage might be cool, but there should be no reason to tweak it further than that. There's really not a better way of doing it.

It beats the shit out of the college format, which takes the kicking game and special teams completely out of the equation. And it's an order of magnitude above hockey, which is kind of like having a dunk contest to decide basketball games.

The college format is retarded, but the NFL at least needs to give both teams a chance. How can it be done? I don't know, but the NFL isn't paying me to come up with a solution.

And the whole "your defense just needs to step up" is a stupid argument. In the NFL these days and the rules set up, offenses are already at an advantage. And after playing four quarters of football, any defense is going to be worn out. Sure, there's times where defenses do step up on OT, but for the most part the game is decided by the coin flip.

But it really isn't. Since 1974, only 28 percent of games are won on the first possession by the team that wins the coin toss. That means both teams get a chance the majority of the time, so poof goes your complaint.

Teams at the end of close games play for overtime anyway, so if you change the format, teams are still going to play for the tie. That's why the college overtime requires you to go for two at some point because coaches will almost always play the odds, which means being conservative, which means a thousand overtimes until someone makes a mistake. The last thing the NFL wants is for someone to get hurt playing garbage time in an extended overtime period.

If you're trying to make it more fair, you can't do that. First of all, if you make the play clock shorter, then teams will have trouble making substitutions and getting plays in because they practice the entire year for that play clock. It also gives some teams advantages over others simply based on their personnel. You could say that you can only run out of the shotgun or the I formation in overtime and it wouldn't be any less unfair.

It really is, but I don't think the players union would go for having to beat the shit out of themselves for an extra quarter. You'd almost be better off eliminating overtime altogether or counting only a half a win for an overtime victory.

Overtime as it is is a gut-check. It's like the kick at the end of a distance run. It's the ultimate in pressure. It's 60 minutes of back breaking work that can be for nothing in a single play. That's why you feel so fucking lousy about your team losing it. You'd feel equally great if they'd won, and you know it.

That's what makes it great.
