I was just wondering. how is it? what are the manin groups of ppl that live there? HOw do they percieve the spurs? are there any SA-specific habits or celebrations or anything unique to SA culture? Im seriously considering Moving to SA when I am done with college because it seems like a nice place and my team is the spurs and will be for life. my girlfriend doesn't wanna live SA because she doesn't like them :rolleyes . she likes the twolves, nuggets and rockets. she is from st.croix like me but hates spurs (traitor!!) so she really doesn't wanna live there. but im thinking i might have to physically carry her there if i make my mind up. so how many of you live in SA right now?

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd live in Texas, let alone San Antonio and was not thrilled when I found out I was moving here 8 years ago. The weather sucks 6 months out of the year for me, but you can't beat the cost of living. The people are very friendly.

Now if someone could tell me what exactly we are celebrating during Fiesta, I'd be happy. No one I asked knows.

If I remember correctly, Fiesta is supposed to celebrate Mexicos independence from Spain. And is San Antonios answer to Mardi Gras! The Spurs are S.A.'s only professional franchise and is loved by 80 - 90% of the population (when they're winning) The people are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet and as Shelly said the summers are torture, lasting about 6 months of the year. It's not so much the heat but the humidity. Mexican culture is predominate here but a varitey of ethnic lifestyles are celebrated throughout the year as well as in neighboring towns, New Braunfels Wurstfest is one that comes to mind. I have lived here for the last 30 years and I have seen this town grow into one of the biggest little cities you'll ever love!!!!

About Fiesta San Antonio
One of America's truly great festivals, FiestaŽ San Antonio is a 10-day celebration held every April to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto and to celebrate San Antonio's rich and diverse cultures. This year marks the 114th celebration!

In 1891, a group of ladies decorated horse-drawn carriages, paraded in front of the Alamo, and pelted each other with flower blossoms. The Parade was organized to honor the heroes from the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. That original "Battle of Flowers" parade became an annual event and has grown into a multi-cultural community celebration unlike any other in our country. From its small beginnings, Fiesta San Antonio has grown into an elaborate ten-day celebration featuring over 150 events, including a parade where floats really float down the San Antonio River.

I have to disagree Shelly. Arizona summers suck big ones as well. 115 degrees and dry or 95 degrees and 80% humidity. They are both hell.

Before I moved, I had the choice of moving to Phoenix, Denver, San Antonio, Dallas or Houston. I chose San Antonio for many reasons but the main is quality of life and the people. You will not find a better community!

Yeah, because those 112 degree days are a "dry heat."

Lol.

I think it only hit 100 or more like 5 times last summer in SA.

The worst day I believe was a 104 degree day. I remember that one well. Because most of the afternoon I was cutting my backyard. Freakin' huge backyard!

SA is 8th, but it is an isolated island of population with no major adjacent cities, like Fort Worth is to Dallas, to provide a large "greater metropolitan" polulation and "market size".

So, I think, in terms of "media market" size, it's way below 9th. IIRC, about 100th.

Solid D
02-25-2005, 09:12 PM
San Antonio is 8th largest but Dallas is actually larger if you look at all the little cities in the Metroplex between Dallas and Ft.Worth.

Of course, if San Antonio and Austin keep growing - this will be one huge SuperMetroplex.

This rank is by population of the metropolitan area. There are other rankings that incorporate things like income and cost of living. Although San Antonio's cost of living is low, it generally tends to rank lower in things like economic power.

I Do Not Live In Texas!

IceColdBrewski
02-25-2005, 11:28 PM
I live in SA. It's alright I guess. The people are friendly and it hardly ever gets really cold. There just isn't a whole lot to do. You can only go to Sea World/Riverwalk/Six Flags/Zoo, so many times. Bringing the family to the same ol' places eventually gets to be a hastle. I'm thinking of buying a camper or a boat just so we can start doing something different for a change.

Given the choice, I'd rather be back in Las Vegas. There's always something to do. If you get sick of the city, you can always head for Lake Mead. Or if you're into camping or skiing, Mt. Charleston is a short trip away. Plus the heat is dry. As Shelly said, I'll take dry heat over this humidity shit anyday. The only bad thing is the crime rate. Every low life thug/punk/gangster who's running from the law in LA usually heads straight for Vegas. I got jumped twice, had my truck broken into 3 times, and had to dodge bullets on more than one occassion during drive-by shootings. Both my brother and my best friend (at the time) had their wheels stolen.

Cool you should mention that, IceColdBrewski! I, too, once lived in Las Vegas and to be honest, the summers there - while hot, could be easily relieved by a plunge into Lake Mead. Have to admit, I truly miss Lake Mead and the casinos.
However, I moved to San Antonio from New York State only 8 years ago - in February, to be exact. That April, I experienced Fiesta for the first time and was enraptured by it. Of course, being a person who absolutely loves hustle and bustle, that was the only time I truly was enraptured.
The summers here are not all that great, but I love the heat and get really cold during the winters here.
The people are absolutely the greatest!!!! Our NBA team is the greatest!!! I had a few friends on the Knicks and managed to get together with a few of them during a pre-season game (Marcus Camby, Latrelle Sprewell for example). Now that they're no longer Knicks, and I'm no longer a New Yorker, it's not the same...
Of course, now I have my sweetie-pie Malik Rose on the Knicks, which might renew my interest - uhh, I think I'm gonna stay a Spurs fan.
I think that if you move to SA, you'll fit right in. Half the population seems to be from somewhere else - we seem to be members of every possible ethnic group and nationality. The Mexican thing can get a little tiresome, but you can't beat a town that has a fiesta every weekend (there always seems to be a reason to celebrate something here).
There are many positives about SA and it sure wouldn't hurt to try us out. :elephant

The rush hour traffic here is still nothing compared to cities like L.A., Houston, Atlanta, and many, many others.

In Los Angeles and Orange County you have to plan your day around traffic. You cannot just hop in your car and go anywhere at 2pm.

I moved to "the OC" (which we never called it that) in 1982 and there was hardly any traffic then. But with all the building they've done out there, that's quickly changed. SA was like that when I first moved here in 1997, but it's changing. It's starting to remind me of OC.

I avoid the 410 as much as possible.

I came to San Antonio from Michigan 9 years ago. Now I live in Leon Valley, which is a really nice little place. The weather stinks, but the food can't be beat, because you can find food from anywhere in the world around here. And the Christmas lights on the Riverwalk every year are beautiful! The job market is decent and the housing VERY affordable.

Fiesta celebrates Texas' independence from Mexico, mainly the Heroes of Alamo. A lot of people confuse it with Cinco de Mayo, which happens arounf the same time, and people just celebrate both.

san antonio would be percieved by a lot of people as a "big little city"...it grown quite a bit and keeps growing, but it still stubbornly hangs on to the small town mentality. Population wise, we are the 8 largest city in the nation (city wise). But when you factor in other cities overall population, we are still much smaller as an overall metro area. For example, dallas-ft worth is the 9 largest, but san antonio doesn't even compare to the metroplex overall, same as seattle, cleveland, detroit, boston.....

There is stuff to do if you want to do it. I lived in Los Angeles for 17 years before moving here and I don't get bored at all. You can do the same things you can do in any city. It's not like there isn't entertainment if you want it. Yes, you can see all the Spurs games on TV. And as far as going to games, the cheapest seats are $9 in the corners of the upperdeck. You can get decent lower level seats for around $50.

San Antonio has none of the following:

hurricanes
earthquakes
mudslides
large grassland fires
blizzards
volcanos
tornados (very very few)
ice storms

SA does have some flash flooding, but unless you're and absolute idiot, you'll never get caught in any water.

I rather have heat than cold. You can always put on shorts and a hat and drink water to stay cool, but no matter how many coats and pairs of underwear you put on, eventually you'll get cold.

sounds good...im not a big city guy (especially since i lived on an island most of my life), i cant deal with the craziness of cities like NY (where my gf wants to live). and tickets are cheap! are there spurs parties and stuff? like at restaurants where ppl sit around and watch the game? there are some of those on st croix

To me one of the downsides of S.A is that it seems like ever since the flood of 98, it rains too damn much like it is right now. Summers seem more rainy and humid instead of hot and dry like before.

I've lived in San Antonio my entire life (26 wonderful years...hehe) and I love it. Recently I decided that I wanted to move to California because I had been there many times. I went to visit friends for two weeks last summer but I couldn't stay. I just felt that I wanted to be back home w/the family and the people. So I don't think I could ever move from here (as others have said too). Love San Antonio.

My bestfriend went to college in Lubbock, Texas and she was excited to leave San Antonio. After a year she was complaining that she missed San Antonio. Now she's back home (after graduating) and doesn't want to leave.

You should try it out...even for vacation or something and see how you like it. That's the best way to go. :)

What are the manin groups of ppl that live there? HOw do they percieve the spurs? are there any SA-specific habits or celebrations or anything unique to SA culture?

Just a bunch of Mexicans and a few others. They drink beer, watch the Spurs, Cowboys, Lucha Libre and open up taco restaurants on every corner. Other than that, this is a regular city with only one professional team.

Sequ has not been the same since his unfortunate lose to "The Beast" in the MWWF (Midget World Wrestling Federation) for the world title. The Beast accidently landed right on the soft and still growing part of Sequ's brain. Sad, since then he's semi vegetable and still short.

Yeah, all 82 games on shown either on WB35, KENS 5, or FOX Sports, and then you have the national games on ESPN, TNT, ABC, etc.

However, if you were a Spur fan when Paragon Cable was still around about 9-10 years ago, a lot of the games were on PAY PER VIEW! That sucked so bad.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this to you duncan2k5, but the average salary of people in San Antonio who have moved here from St. Croix is $14,000,000 per year.

Moving here after living in Virginia and Ohio....My dad has always said....."you can't shovel heat".....god I hate snow, cold weather.

I have lived in the Leon Valley area since 1980....I can remember when Grissom and Culebra Rds. were basically 2-lane country roads, and Tezel was practically a dirt road.

I love San Antonio...it is a big city...but it is a small city at heart.

Shelly,

I live in Dallas, but my corporate office is in Orange County (Costa Mesa). SA is nothing like OC whatsoever traffic-wise. I was out there last week when it was raining and you should have seen the 405 going both ways. Having said that, you can't be Southern California weather 99% of the time. I would move out there in a heartbeat (as long as my company wanted to give me a 100% raise to make up for the cost of living differences).

I didn't say it was like that now. I said SA when I first moved here in 1997 is like OC when I moved there in 1982. OC in the 80s had no traffic and there were still orange groves in Irvine along the 5. I know SA will never be like OC...it doesn't have the commutes like CA does, but the traffic has gotten worse since I move here.

My parents live in OC so I'm back there every year and am amazed how much is changes each time and much worse the traffic is.

I used to commute from San Juan Capistrano to Corona for years--100 miles round trip. I put 75,000 miles on my car in 2 years. Ugh..
