Oh jeez. Do I really need to say why this is laughable?

Yes, he's a doctor, but he's mostly just a television personality. Has he actually done anything to establish himself within the medical community as an expert on something? What does he know about public health issues? Has he ever had a leadership position? Be honest, now: is Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General any less absurd than Dr. Drew as Surgeon General?

Don't you think that maybe, just maybe, Obama is being cynical and making a CNN man a part of his administration? I mean, he's so cute and funny! Everyone loves Sanjay Gupta, and CNN loves Obama!

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about

An assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine and associate chief of the neurosurgery service at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Gupta specializes in all facets of neurosurgical care with a strong interest in complicated spine, trauma and 3-D image guided operations. He has recently had articles published in the Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgical Focus on percutaneous pedicle screw placement.

Dr. doobs?

No, I'm a lawyer. But my father has been in academic medicine for over thirty years, and he has held an important leadership position in the federal government (NIH - but I won't tell you more).

"An assistant professor of neurosurgery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurosurgery) at Emory University School of Medicine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emory_University_School_of_Medicine) and associate chief of the neurosurgery service at Grady Memorial Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grady_Memorial_Hospital) in Atlanta."

My father achieved the analogous positions in his field in his late twenties and early thirties. Seriously - weak sauce.

Your dad was Associate Chief of ________ in his 30's? I find that extremely hard to believe. An assistant professor in medicine in his 30's? Sure, that's possible.

Gupta also achieved those positions in his twenties and thirties, while having tremendous success in broadcasting and writing.

Quite strong sauce.

But he never progressed--my point is citing his experience as an assistant professor is pretty much meaningless. An assistant professor is the first thing you do in academic medicine. It's the lowest thing you can do in academic medicine. I'll return to me previous question: has he done anything to establish himself in the medical community? Another one: what does he know about public health issues, besides telling me on CNN to eat my vegetables and to avoid sitting on my ass all day?

Why not Dr. Drew?

In his role as a medical doctor, Pinsky is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keck_School_of_Medicine_of_USC) at USC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Southern_California), Medical Director for the Department of Chemical Dependency Services at Las Encinas Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Las_Encinas_Hospital&action=edit&redlink=1) in Pasadena, California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasadena,_California), staff member at Huntington Memorial Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington_Memorial_Hospital), and a private practitioner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_practitioner).

BA Amherst College (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amherst_College)
MD University of Southern California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Southern_California), Keck School of Medicine of USC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keck_School_of_Medicine_of_USC)

Member of American College of Physicians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_College_of_Physicians)

And, no, I don't think my dad should be Surgeon General. He would make less money, and he's looking forward to retirement. I only mentioned him because someone asked me if I was a doctor, or what I knew about doctors' credentials.

The point is, this is a joke. Sanjay Gupta is a celebrity. I'm asking for someone to please show me how he is a great doctor. Has he distinguished himself?

Like I said, pretty pedestrian qualifications, especially for a man who is 39 years old. This is a celebrity pick.

Do you really think he's the most qualified candidate? Isn't that what matters? And why not Dr. Drew? I posted his qualifications, you know.

Exactly -- and folks these days are more likely to listen to a well-known public figure. Gupta is completely qualified.

If that's the case, then why do we even have a Surgeon General? I mean, Sanjay Gupta is already a well-known public figure, and he makes a ton of money because people watch him and listen to him. Doesn't he already tell us not to smoke, get off our asses, and wear rubbers? Why would he accept a paycut to do precisely the same thing? Why not save some federal money and abolish the Office of the Surgeon General? After all, we already have Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Drew, Dr. Oz, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Dre, Dr. J, Dr. Phil, and Andrew Weil. Just a question.

Maybe the Surgeon General has responsibilities greater than that of a talking head on CNN. Maybe the Surgeon General needs to be a leader and an effective administrator. Maybe the Surgeon General actually needs to know something about public health besides the glaringly obvious.

Not everyone can be a celebrity like Sanjay Gupta or Dr. Drew, so perhaps we should first consider hard-working doctors who have actually distinguished themselves in their fields.

The Surgeon General in addition being the nation's chief public health educator does lead a large public health bureaucracy (http://www.hhs.gov/ophs/). While Dr. Gupta, as doobs pointed out, may be lacking in institutional or academic experience, his cv is thoroughly respectable and he is obviously well qualified to fill a public affairs capacity.

Isn't he?

The Surgeon General is probably the most worthless, least influential appointment in government.

Its one step up in responsibility than being an Ambassador.

And we all know what the Blagololoovichh wanted in return for Obama's seat because it was such a cake job...

In case anyone cares - Why he was chose:
Because he is not only a qualified, experienced doctor, but a TV-friendly personality who is good at explaining medical issues to the American People. As Obama is looking to try and make a major change to our broken health care system, this will be vitally important to have. The Surgeon General is hired to be the face of the medical system in a president's government, and to advise the American people on medical issues the president decided are important.

That's why he was chosen. IMHO, it was a very good selection.

Also, I'm glad Atul Gawande (www.gawande.com) wasn't chosen, because my partner is currently working with him and we don't want him to go off to Washington D.C.

Y'all do know that the Surgeon general is mostly a figurehead position with little ability to affect policy, right?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgeon_General_of_the_United_States

Sheesh.

The fact that Gupta is semi-famous is actually a bonus.

This particular position requires about as much administrative skill as managing a very small business.

Much ado about nothing. :rolleyes
