Tim Duncan has quietly crept to within 3 assists of his first triple double of the season. The Spurs have put themselves in position to win the first of these team's 3 meetings on the season. Duncan is pulling out all the stops and makes the picture perfect touch pass, netting Parker an easy two.

Final: Spurs 112, Lakers 111 (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/spursworld/2009/01/game-blog-spurs-vs-lakers.html)
By Joe Alexander
FOURTH QUARTER
Roger Mason Jr. completed a three-point play with 10.5 seconds left off an inbounds pass and the Spurs' defense came through on the final possession of a 112-111 victory over the Lakers.
Mason and Manu Ginobili double-teamed Kobe Bryant on the Lakers' last possession. Bryant passed the ball to Trevor Ariza, who drove but was surrounded by the Spurs' inside defenders. Ariza traveled the Spurs got the ball back with less than a second left.
Kobe Bryant made a 3-pointer to put the Lakers in front 111-109 with 12.0 seconds left in the game. Spurs timeout.
The Lakers' Trevor Ariza made a tip-in, then Tim Duncan made one of two free throws. The Spurs lead 105-102 with 3:08 left. The Spurs have an outside shooting lineup on the floor for the final four minutes with Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Roger Mason Jr., Matt Bonner along with Duncan. Bonner has five fouls.
L.A.'s Josh Powell had three baskets and Kobe Bryant nailed a 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer. The Spurs' lead is down to 102-100 with 4:45 left.
The Spurs hit the 100-point mark with 8:04 left in the game on a George Hill jumper. That gave the Spurs their biggest lead at 100-89. Kobe Bryant was on the bench early in the quarter but he is about to come back in.
Michael Finley, who was scoreless the first three quarters, completed a three-point play with 11:18 left. The Spurs lead 98-89 with 8:59 left.
Tim Duncan didn't get a very long rest to start the fourth quarter. Matt Bonner picked up his fourth foul with 10:34 left in the game and Duncan went back in. Duncan had been on the bench since 2:28 left in the third quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
Manu Ginobili scored six points in the last 12 seconds of the third quarter, three free throws and a 3-pointer, and the Spurs take a 95-87 lead into the fourth quarter. Ginobili has 25 points.
George Hill hasn't had many shots tonight, but he has been making them when he gets the chance. His 3-pointer with 1:12 left gave him eight points and put the Spurs ahead 89-80 - their biggest lead so far.
The teams are trading shot for shot. Tim Duncan has six points in the first nine minutes of the second half and the Spurs lead 82-79. Andrew Bynum has the Lakers' last two baskets.
Roger Mason Jr. hit a 3-pointer and a jumper and Tony Parker added a jumper. The Spurs lead 70-63 early in the second half. While the Spurs have had trouble matching up with the Lakers' big men, but Lakers haven't been able to keep up with all the Spurs' perimeter scorers.
SECOND QUARTER
Manu Ginobili and Kobe Bryant both scored 14 points in the second quarter. The Spurs went into the break with a 63-61 lead.
Manu Ginobili has three 3-pointers in the second quarter. The most recent put the Spurs in front 56-53.
Tim Duncan's second basket of the night came with 6:14 left in the second quarter and tied it 45-45. He got on a roll and scored seven straight points.
The Lakers' Andrew Bynum is now 5 of 5 from the field and has 10 points. Gasol had 14 by the end of the first quarter.
Manu Ginobili and Matt Bonner hit 3-pointers early in the second quarter. Ginobili has three baskets in a stretch of 62 seconds going back to the end of the first quarter. The Spurs lead 39-38.
There was a familiar sight to start the second quarter: The Spurs' Bruce Bowen standing next to Kobe Bryant. When Bryant went to the bench with 9:10 left in the second quarter, Bowen was replaced by Roger Mason Jr.
FIRST QUARTER
Manu Ginobili had a steal, a fast-break dunk and a driving basket all in the last 20 seconds and George Hill made two free throws with 0.1 second left as the Spurs finished the quarter with a 30-29 lead.
Tony Parker just helped the Spurs get a stop on a Lakers break, then came back and finished a Spurs break at the other end. He has 10 points and it's tied 22-22.
The Spurs can't stop the Lakers' big men. Pau Gasol hit 6 of 7 and has 12 points. Andrew Bynum has four and the Lakers lead 20-15.
Kobe Bryant recorded his first basket at the 5:19 mark. It looked like Roger Mason Jr. had good defensive position at Bryant was driving, but Bryant pulled back and shot over Mason.
Both teams are off to a hot start and the Spurs lead 13-10. Pau Gasol scored the Lakers' first eight points.
Roger Mason Jr. got the defensive assignment on Kobe Bryant. Four-plus minutes into the game Mason has five points on a 3-pointer and a jumper. Bryant hasn't scored yet.
PREGAME
Spurs starters: Tony Parker, Roger Mason Jr., Michael Finley, Matt Bonner and Tim Duncan.
UPDATE: The Lakers' Jordan Farmar and Luke Walton are inactive tonight. Both have been injured. Sasha Vujacic is on the active list but is out with an injury also. Lamar Odom returned from injury in time for Tuesday's game against Houston and is active for tonight.
It seemed like there were as many Lakers jerseys as Spurs jerseys on the folks wandering around the concourse before the game. There was a loud road when the Lakers hit the floor - both cheers and boos. This might be the liveliest crowd we've had so far this season.

Are you fuckin stupid? Why wasn't Tim on the block demanding the damn ball when the Lakers came back? Where the fuck was he? He's SOFT...period. His defense has been atrocious in this quarter and you're still on his sack because of a couple of shots? GTFOH :lol
Oh, let me see, a couple of shots that kept us in the game? Yeah, Tim only had 20 and 10 with 8 assists and 2 blocks playing 1-on-2 against two very good bigs tonight, he was total garbage. Do you even know what you're saying?
As for play calling, Pop does that you fucking tool. If Pop calls a play for Manu or TP, as he did during the Laker's run, Tim's going to break the play and call for the ball??? You GTFOH because you're a fucking moron.
As for his defence, he's doing the best he can playing without another defensive big who has a hope against Bynum and Gasol. And how'd he do helping to force that TO on the last play.

rebounds
Lakers: 32(8 offensive)
Spurs: 31(7 offensive)
does anybody expect more out of Bynum than 18 points on 9-15 shooting? I don't..the rebounding isn't a surprise, since he's prone to having some games like this..
Pau Gasol had 21 points on 10-14 shooting..not surprising, since he's a great player..he can play better than this, but not by much vs. Duncan IMO..
my point is that we just won a game vs. the Lakers, despite big performances from their frontcourt..even Josh fucking Powell scored 6 points in the 4th quarter..

You can't have it both ways. Like I said if Farmar is healthy who gets the minutes. Does Ariza still play and cover Parker or does he sit. Is Phil going to play 12 players during the whole game. Like I said you had your core guys Bryant,Gasol,Odom,Bynum so I don't think that was as much of an issue as you play it up to be. Your acting like your key players were out which they weren't.The main weakness of the Lakers is your PG's are not that good.

It's a travel and here is why.
After the double team on Kobe, on the pass, Ginobili steps to the free throw line and establishes his position. It's Bonner that is shading him towards Ginobili.
Ariza attacks the middle and tries to split the double. The travel call was because when he picked up the ball, he took 1 step with his right foot. He then tried to take his 2nd step on the drive but his left leg hit Ginobili's left leg. Ariza's left leg did not touch the ground and once his right leg came down, that's the travel right there.

and not just that - Parker seemed to shrivel up in the last part of the 4th qtr. I'm a Parker fan, so I'm not hating on him. I can't argue with whether or not Mason's shot was a lucky shot, but his release is so quick that I think he's suited for those last second shots. We need a good ball handler late in the game. Tony just doesn't cut it. He's too "i'm thinking of a word" ahh French. He'll surrender in the 4th quarter.
BTW you need to work on your defense Parker. When Fisher is schooling you, you have a problem. It's not TP's ball handling, it's his decision making. Twice within a couple of minutes in the 4th, he left his feet with no clear shot and no one to pass to and ended up throwing the ball away both times.
If people wonder why why Pop loves JV, it because he never does stuff like that. Maybe it'll start to rub off on Tony someday.

Your acting like your key players were out which they weren't.The main weakness of the Lakers is your PG's are not that good.
farmar was part of the rotation. powell never plays, along with radmanovic so the same rotation would stay just replace farmar vujacic walton with powell, yue radmanovic. like i said what if the spurs had to go with vaughn instead of hill and bowen instead of mason. its a big deal!

It's funny to me that people don't realize how good Tony has been in the clutch this year. Better than any other Spurs statistically.
Neither Manu or Tony did anything in the 4th tonight.
It's a team. Some guys step up on some nights and some guys step up on others.
+1 to that
Didn't you notice that Lakers D was locked on manu and tony? I mean Ariza defended tony well. Thank god we have mason.

Well, our role players really did well against the Lakers (Hill, Bonner, and Mason). I don't think we will have a problem with scoring (unless of course we decide to choke our fourth quarter leads) but we do need another big if we want to beat the Lakers in a 7 game series.

TP kept trying to take it to the rack with all the Lakers bigs packing the lane, and not even looking for the kick out. I like the aggressiveness, but sometimes TP seems unaware of where his help is.

Blame the coaching staff for not getting the ball to Manu at all at the end of the game. The way he completely destroyed Kobe at the end of the first half and again at the end of the third quarter should have been capitalized on. No matter, the Spurs got the win without the big statement. It didn't have to be that close, though.

I got kind of pissed with the pound to Tim late O calls. Both Manu and TP missed on Tim rolls. It as if Tim wasn't expecting it both times.
