View Full Version : Cavs v Lakers

This is going to be a great game. Both teams have some injuries, but are still playing at a high level. It will be interesting to see how the Lakers handle this game and Lebron. Will Ariza guard him? Kobe? Who is going to guard Pau and Bynum?
This is a tough part of the schedule for the Lakers. They have played 2 contenders the past two games and lost both games in a shootout. This is another home test against another potential finals opponent, it will be interesting to see how this goes.

I think the Cavs turn into the Cadavers tonight and go down. The West injury really hurts because they have to depend on Sasha Pavlovic to step up- which he normally doesn't because he is such a pussy. But for whatever reason he seems to guard Kobe pretty well...by which I mean he doesn't give up 40, or even 35 when he guards him.
The good news is that the Lakers are banged up too, and the Cavs are 4-1 in the last 5 vs the Lakers. I think the Lakers' size will hurt the Cavs and carry the Lakers tonight. Missing Z really hurts us.

Yeah, Big Z being out is the worst injury for either team. It will be interesting to see if the Cavs just try and out gun them by going small.

3 straight losses to contenders would not bother the Lakers?

To me, it would hurt the Lakers more.
Lakers have loss key games lately. They got swept by Orlando and loss to the Spurs. Only elite win they have this year I would say is beating the Celtics. If Lakers dont beat the Cavs tonight I'd say this could messed with their head a little.

It's not like they lost to some panzy ass teams. They just need to execute better down the stretch.
Lakers at worst will win 60 games this year and will still have home court throughout the West Conf. I'd be happy with that instead of gassing your team to get the best record. It's all about spacing yourself. You'd have to look at the 2006 Spurs & Pistons. They looked tired that post season. :bang:bang:bang

It is not about wins losses so much as it is about quality wins and losses. The Lakers have been in every game, but you know no body likes to lose 3 in a row (especially when 2 are at home).
The Lakers should be winning these games. They do not worry about "panzy ass teams" but they do care about the measuring sticks of the league.

3 straight losses to contenders would not bother the Lakers?
Well, you guys would have to know what this team is all about to know why it wouldn't. Yeah, they won't like it if it happens, but this is a real team. They hang out en masse together during their free time, socializing. A tight band of brothers have they become. They have tasted getting to the finals, something many teams must do before they can win them. Season mission is an NBA title. They are capable, and remain favorites in the west. Kobe doesn't need Shaq to win it all, contrary to what the smack talkers say.
Had the Lakers won last year, they wouldn't be as driven as they are this year. That's bad news for the league. That's my opinion, and I don't mind seeing all the people here say otherwise. If I wanted to see everyone agree with me, I would post at a Laker site. I like the hostile environment more.
Besides, the season is just now reaching the midway point. A long way to go.......

for this particular game Z being out is the worst- I think that over the long haul West being out hurts more because he is our best perimeter defender. He is able to keep speedy guards out of the paint. That is why we match up well with the Lakers, because they don't depend on that.
But I think the loss would hurt the Cavs more because they are neck-and-neck with Orlando and Boston. If they have a bad road trip it could be hard to make up ground on those teams. I'm sold into thinking the Cavs need HCA to win the East

Whoever is guarding LeBron is gonna have their work cut out for them. I think he's around 270 pounds, which is ridiculous considering how fast he is on the court.
Gasol is listed at 260 and Bynum is 280 I believe
Walton, Odom, and Radman are all around 230, while Ariza is at 210 and Kobe's around 200.
LeBron's probably gonna have a weight advantage on everybody, I hope the Lakers are ready to play tonight.

Lakers have to be favorites, especially at home. But the Cavs will play good defense. It will be interesting to see if Kobe tries to match Lebron or if they just dump the ball to Bynum and Pau all day (which they should).
Lakers 55: When will the losses matter, at what point? Also, it does not take "getting to the finals" to amp you up. Spurs won their first finals appearance.

The Lakers don't need to win regular season games to prove to themselves that they are the best team in the league. They could lose tonight and I sincerely doubt it would do anything to their psyche.
The real test for them was against BOS on XMAS day. That was the only team last season that truly got into their heads and punked them. Well, they passed their test. Now it's all about staying healthy and maintaining the #1 spot in the WC for HCA in the playoffs.
Regular season games in January typically don't mean much to contenders.

Exactly. It would be one thing if the Lakers were getting blown out by contenders, but they've basically lost the last 2 games in the final seconds. No reason to panic really.
I'd like to see Walton return to the lineup ASAP though. The IQ of that 1st unit goes down the drain when Space Cadet is on the floor.

No one is saying you should panic, but to say that the only game that matters is the one Celtic win is absurd. So the Lakers can do no wrong for the rest of the season because they passed their one and only test this year? It makes no sense. Many Laker fans state that the team does not care about the mediocre teams, but does care about making statements against the cream of the crop. If this is true, then these losses, although close and competitive have to mean something.

Besides that, the game should be very entertaining. Fans are going to use this in the argument of Kobe v Lebron. Although it will be great, real fans know that one game does not define a season or answer a debate.

DPG21920

I do not think they have had one this year, which is pretty crazy. Spurs have the same kind of tough schedule coming up. It will be a massive test for them and they are not playing nearly at the level of the Lakers, and their games are on the road.
ElNono
01-19-2009, 07:43 PM
I think this game will come down to Kobe hitting a clutch trey to put the Lakers up 4 with .6 seconds to go, followed by Lebron making a double-crab move, taking 5 steps before he chucks a trey while being fouled and missing the game-tying free-throw. At which point the refs will rule a violation and let him try again. Then we go to overtime.

Well Lebron has owned Kobe the past 4 or so matchups, but people will still say Kobe is better. So tonight is a way for Kobe to make himself better than Lebron, but Lebron can never be better than Kobe- even if he scores 41 points and hits the game winner...because that was done last year and Kobe is still so much better than Lebron

I never said the game didn't matter. Of course the game matters, every game matters.
But this one doesn't really have the importance that the BOS game did. It's just a regular season game against a very good ball club. The Lakers won't approach it any differently than they did against SAS or ORL.
The Laker team has all the confidence in the world. Losing in January won't change that come playoff time.

Brah, you know I am one of the more logical thinking Laker fans. This game, like the one on Friday, means a lot more to the other team than the Lakers. Just like Wedesday meant more to SA than LA, and the Navidad game meant more to LA than Boston. It's just a measuring stick for the other teams right now. It means infinite times more to Cleveland right now.

I see what you are saying, but I do not agree with some of the Laker fans that are acting like the Lakers can do no wrong and nothing matters because of the one Celtics win.
If you guys had lost that game, but still played the same exact way since then and had the same record, you would still be the same team and just as good.
Also, I do not agree that the Spurs game meant "way" more to the Spurs. Hear me out. The Lakers are supposed to have that killer instinct, get up against good competition. They know that the Spurs are widely regarded as their biggest obstacle in the West. Those are the games where the Lakers usually come out and dominate. Look at how Kobe was acting. He wanted that one bad and he did not get it.

Naw...I dont think so. Because two of those three games were decided in the last minute of the game. The Lakers could have won both the SA and ORL games.
The playoffs are about matchups more so than the regular season. When the Spurs won the title in 2007, the Cavs beat them twice in the regular season. And last year...Phoenix won the regular season series against the Spurs 3-1 and SA beat them in the 1st round playoff series 4-1. Also, The Spurs won last year regular season series against the Lakers 2-1 and lost in the WCF.
(I can't believe I'm defending the Lakers!! LOL!!)
The bigger concern I would have as Lakers fans...is their inconsistent defensive effort for 4 quarters and the team giving up 100 points or more in almost half of their games so far.

It's not like the Lakers have been blown out by any elite team thus far. They've basically been in every game right to the bloody end. If they were getting crushed by elite teams then I think there would be pause for concern, but losing extremely close games when you're down important role players is not going to make the team question itself.

Obviously, there are some important games in the regular season and yes the Lakers-Celts Christmas Day game was important because it was the first time since last year's finals they played each other and the way the Lakers lost was embrassing. But..to call it a "statement game" is a bit much in my opinion.
Just as much as last week's SA-LAL game was a "statement game" for the Spurs. I maybe in the minority with that opinion....but a mid-Jan regular season game isn't a statement game.

I never said this game tonight matters. I used it as a comparison to the Celtics game to prove a point about some backwards thinking.

Why do you care so much about the Lakers DPG? Just curious....you spend an awful lot of time trashing them.
I don't think any Laker fan is truly confident about the team we have now. They're good, but not 3-peat good by any means. I want to see what they look post ASB before I make any sort of meaningful predictions. In the 1st of the season they'e done fairly well I think, 31-8 is a good record and nothing to be ashamed about.
DPG21920
01-19-2009, 10:10 PM
Where have I trashed them? I constantly say they are playing elite basketball and acknowledge that the Spurs are not playing at their level.
My problem is not with the Lakers team, but their fans.
Why do you care so much about the Spurs, just curious? You spend a lot of time on a Spurs board trashing them.
DPG21920
01-19-2009, 10:14 PM
I do not think they have had one this year, which is pretty crazy. Spurs have the same kind of tough schedule coming up. It will be a massive test for them and they are not playing nearly at the level of the Lakers, and their games are on the road.
Why do you care so much about the Spurs, just curious? You spend a lot of time on a Spurs board trashing them.
Good question.
Guy makes himself look like an idiot asking someone why they care about the Lakers so much when he's the first idiot to jump at the Spurs when they lose or not playing Spurs ball.
