You don't own the man because he plays sports. He lives in the lap of luxury because he's a very good basketball player, and that has nothing to do with what we are talking about.

As for "he doesn't have to live here", what horseshit. Just because he doesn't agree with your point of view, he should move to another country? He did not insult the soldiers, nor did he insult the flag - if he burned a flag and said that "America is shit" then he might be anti-American, but he didn't do those things, he simply said he doesn't "celebrate" the anthem. It is unreasonable to call him "anti-American" just because the anthem doesn't mean the same thing to him as it does to you.

You're not listening to what I'm saying. I'm not saying anything about the fans owning the players, even though without the fans, they have nothing..I'm saying the guy should have RESPECT! The national anthem of the country you live in should mean the same to everyone in that country...especially in a country where people fight for the freedom of those people. What I'm saying is, if he doesn't respect the country, and the people who fight for it, or the national anthem, which is the symbol of this country, he doesn't HAVE to live here. Don't put words in my mouth. The guy said he didn't believe in the national anthem because he's black. That's garbage..period. Anti American, maybe not...maybe I was wrong...but he damn sure should have more respect for his country, and the people who fight for it.

No, I am listening to exactly what you're saying and have heard it many times from Americans just like you. We will never see eye to eye because you look through the very narrow slit of jingoism, whilst I try to see a bigger picture. You have extrapolated "I don't celebrate the anthem" into "I hate America and its soldiers", and I think that's unreasonable. You have also judged a man on a couple of soundbites, which I think is unwise.

There is plenty of dissent about the Australian anthem - some people like it, others completely hate it - but no one calls anyone else un-Australian for their opinion about it. Nor did people here label each other as "true Austalian" or "anti-Australian" over their opinion on joining the latest Iraq war - it is a peculiarly American trait to hound others to tow the line over issues that people should be able to dissent on. We are talking about something very similar to the Dixie Chicks saga - they were not being "anti-American", or hating on the troops - that was patently obvious to anyone with half a brain - they simply objected to their country's involvement in a war that they disagreed with, as is their democratic right and responsibility, and yet they were hounded as if they had betrayed the nation. Jingoism at its finest.

Anyway, have a nice day in your black and white world. I'll stick to my shades of grey.

Go ahead..you do that. I think the guy saying "I don't celebrate this shit..I'm black" is disrespectful, especially when you've become a rich man by playing a game in that country. And I find that more people agree with me than you. Believe what you will, and that's fine, but jingoism? I'm sorry..our anthem means more than that. It's not jingoism..it's just plain old patriotism.

How is saying "I'm ashamed that our President is from our state" simply objecting to their country's involvement in a war?

It's amazing (and maybe a little sad) that an Australian understands the basic concepts of America better than a lot of Americans. The United States was built upon the concept of dissent. Its Constitution enshrined the principle of freedom of speech. And yet you have all these so-called Patriots who cannot understand such simple concepts. Do people think the founding fathers believed that Americans should walk in lock-step, turn their brains off and worship the flag like automatons?

Nice argument. I didn't interpret J-Ho's comments as "I don't celebrate the anthem" or "I hate America and its soldiers". Noone is celebrating the song when they stand. The song is a celebration that I'm sure some enjoy and some do not. We stand in recognition and appreciation of what we have, and by extension respect for those who've sacrificed for it. That's the celebration. I don't think Josh Howard hates America or its soldiers. I think he's an idiot trying to look cool for a camera who doesn't know what he's standing for.

Edit - Hah look at that, I made a point without generalizing or insulting anyone. AND without tooting my own horn...aw damn.

what they said?

G Payton and C Webb saying TP one of the best...
GP said tp will be a hall of famer and almost apologising for not paying enough tribute to him when mensioning th best PG of the league...
C Webb talked about TP consistensy and toughness in the league that is really amazing since so many "stars" often shine during 2 or 3 years only and tp has been there every night for 8 years!
Nice TP interview too!

But I'm not "comfortable" with my english so I let other STalkers do it for me! :lol

But that's exactly what he said...his quote was "I don't celebrate this shit..I'm black." That's what really got to me. I guess because I've had a lot of people in my family, and my best friend fight for this country, and they've told me that the anthem is a symbol to them. To me, if someone disrespects that symbol, they're disrespecting them. I guess I could be wrong, and that's fine...but that's just how I feel.
