More heart trouble for Oberto

By Jeff McDonald on Mar 27, 2009 11:28 AM | Permalink (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/03/more-heart-trou.html) | Comments (0) (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/03/more-heart-trou.html#comments)

The return of a familiar heart ailment will leave Fabricio Oberto sidelined for at least the next two games.
Oberto, 33, began feeling heart flutters after Tuesday's game against Atlanta. An EKG performed Wednesday confirmed a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, a condition that has sidelined Oberto twice before in his career, including for the first two games of this season.
Atrial fibrillation causes the heart to beat out of rhythm. To correct it, doctors use an electric shock to restore it to a normal rhythm.
Oberto will not be available tonight against the Clippers, and probably will not make the trip to New Orleans so that the team's medical staff can continue to evaluate him.
A 6-foot-10 center from Argentina, Oberto had fallen out of Gregg Popovich's front line rotation since the arrival of Drew Gooden. However, with Tim Duncan fighting sore knees, the Spurs can use all the big men they can muster.
"We're all worried about him, we all wish him the best," said Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, Oberto's fellow countryman and longtime friend. "It's a bad thing for him, because T.D.'s not in a great condition, and he's having the opportunity to play, to get on the court and to get the feel for the game that he kind of lost. Now he can't play, so it's a tough one."

This doesn't sound good especially since it keeps coming back. Hope he gets better soon :depressed.

Wow-Poor Fab. Hope he gets better soon and it doesn't affect his career. But it certainly seems odd and disquieting because of the reccurence of this ailment. Our prayers are with you Fab.

Will the injuries ever end for the Spurs?

That's very scary..with guys like Gathers, Maravich, Lewis, Johnson and Duckworth, Oberto should definitely consider retiring. He's a great piece of the team, but his well being is more important.

Wow. Hopefully it doesnt have to come to that yet but if it does...what better way to send him in to retirement than with a championship. :toast

Damn it sucks.

If playing basketball is even slightly risky for him, Oberto should retire in the second. It's a no brainer after his long and very successful basketball career.

Get well soon Fabri.

Maybe Fab should walk away from the game. As Spurs fans we love the contributions he's made for us, especially in the 07 championship, but none of us wants him to cut years off his life trying to compete at the NBA level if his heart isn't in tip-top shape. Good luck and we wish you nothing but the best Fab.

Fabricio Oberto Medical Update

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Fabricio Oberto will miss the team's next two games (3/27 vs. L.A. Clippers and 3/29 at New Orleans) due to atrial fibrillation.

Yesterday Oberto felt abnormal sensations in his chest. After being seen by the team's medical staff he had an EKG which confirmed he was experiencing atrial fibrillation. He then underwent a cardioversion which restored his heart to its normal rhythm.

Over the next four days Oberto will receive daily EKG exams to confirm that his heart maintains its normal rhythm. Barring any unforeseen complications, he is expected to be available for the Spurs-Thunder game on 3/31.

Update from before the Clippers game.

Doctors to keep close eye on Oberto (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/03/doctors-to-keep.html)
By Jeff McDonald

Fabricio Oberto has had three episodes of atrial fibrillation in the past 23 months. If it happens again soon, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, Oberto's heart condition will be cause for grave concern.

"When you're seriously concerned is when it starts to happen more frequently, when the bouts come much closer together," Popovich said before tonight's game against the Clippers.

Oberto's first occurence with the condition, an arrythmia hallmarked by heart flutters, came in April 2007. He had another episode in October of last year, just before the start of the regular season. IThis time, as in the previous instances, doctors used an electric shock procedure to get Oberto's heart back in rhythm.

"If all of a sudden he starts getting one every three months or every four months, then we'll really start to wonder what the hell is going on here," Popovich said. "At this point, they say they've been far enough apart that as long as they get it back in check, he's fine."

Obert has been ruled out of tonight's game, as well as the Spurs game Sunday in New Orleans. He is scheduled to visit the doctor Saturday and again on Monday. If his heart checks out, he should be able to return to the court after that, Popovich said.

We need Oberto to keep our big-man rotation at its peak. It's good to know that he's fine now.
