I am reading between the lines but I think he's saying it's time to rest and put this bad season away for him.

He also thinks people will talk shit about him now because of him playing in the Olympics even though everybody warned him not too.

Has he been reading this forum because it's already started in some threads....:-) Seriously, I had to laugh to keep from crying......Manu is my favorite Spurs player.

I wish him the best and hope/pray that's he will get healthy and ready to go for 2010. He will make up for this year in 2010......I have confidence in him!
Get well Manu!

So Manu has a really bad injury and he communicates with his fans on facebook. :wow

Mad props to him. Aside of being a great player, he is a damn nice guy. :tu

I agree. I'm not into the social online networks (myspace, facebook) but I wouldn't mind posting a message of condolence and hope for a great 2010.

The Olympics is a moot point since Hindsight is 20-20.

Manu is a warrior, he went with his instincts to play and his instincts were wrong. So be it. If he were a wimp, we wouldn't be dealing these problems, but we'd also have a boring ass player on our hands with no heart. He's not afraid of risking failure to win.

Actually if you take a step back and look at it... you can see Pop was playing around with lineups and such to see what he does/doesn't have while waiting to see if it was going to matter or not (i.e., if Manu came back healthy or not).

Will be interesting to see the rotations the rest of the way.

If Tim isn't going to damage himself for next season by playing this season, then the Spurs have to let him play and keep fighting. I know they won't win a title without Manu but I'd like to see them get to round two.

I am sure the Spurs have come to count on the revenue from the play-offs, as well, and would like as many playoff games as possible as long as Tim's future health is not in jeopardy. Sadly, I doubt they will sell out.

My wife is, shes the 1 telling me this!!!

There are 4:

Stage I - Focal compression of the subchondral bone (bone beneath the cartilage)

Stage II - Focal compression of the subchondral bone with partial detachment of a fragment of cartilage

Stage III - Focal compression of the subchondral bone with a fully detached fragment of cartilage, still situated in place at the site of injury
Stage IV - Focal compression of the subchondral bone with a fully detached fragment of cartilage, detached from the site of injury and floating in the joint space

Calm down, I'm bothered by this too!

Well, I am calm, it's just that my spouse is an MD and we live here in SA. My spouses colleagues give opinions to the Spurs medical staff when called upon. All I heard was laughter when I asked if Manu's fracture would take 12-18 months to heal. And, obvioulsy, my spouse was right, since it's sounding like Manu won't even need surgery just rest and rehab.

Also, sorry about being so harsh to your 12-18 month guess on Manu's recovery time.

I thought you were a Laker fan until I read your avatar again. You're actually a Lakerhater. So, I am sure you were just giving your opinion and not trying to be a hater and making us feel bad with that long recovery time you posted. Also, since we're talking about grades 1-4 for the injury, I'm hopeful it's not the worst grade since they were keeping an eye on it and taking films pretty often. Peace.:toast

This news just has me gutted. Didn't the Spurs take the most cautious approach possible with his latest setback? I feel disappointed for Manu and the Spurs but ticked off about how all this may have come about. My first thought when Manu had a stress reaction was from over-compensating. I feel since the Laker series Manu didn't give himself the best shot of recovering and that started with the olympics. You go back and read some of our concerns this was my biggest fear. About Manu's health and pro-longing his career. Hopefully this is just season ending and not something that becomes chronic. Im gonna still cling to the hope (dream) that Manu can return to his old self next season.

Time to enjoy the ride for the rest the season and play-offs. The expectations are lowered and reality has finally set in .

.

From what was reported and what we do know about the initial injury surgery was always on the cards. That surgery would of happened sooner and this whole process including the stress reaction probably would have happened earlier in the season or might not have happened at all. He simply would of had more time. Manu could of just kept rehabbing, he would of gotten training camp under his belt or he could of even rested longer. Then this last month during his latest lay-off it always felt like it was a race against time to get Manu healthy and ready for the play-offs. Now it seems like the Spurs rushed him back too soon but what choice did they have.

with Manu done for the season, the other spurs especially those who can play SG should stand out manly and try to make up the missing piece left by Manu. Now it's time for Pop to get Bowen out of his underwear's pocket and blow away the untidy smell around his body with the rest games left in the regular season, Bowen won't do anything effective for spurs at the offensive end though.

Sad for Manu.
As for the spurs, despite him being an icon in SA, you have to wonder if keeping a high salary, for a guy that was hurt twice in a row in the playoffs and that isn't getting any younger or healthier, is really worth the matter.
I didn't say I would trade him, but he switches from the "you aren't going anywhere" box to the "show me if your proposal is worth it" one.
As a Spurs fan, this season ending injury is a major blow.

I hope Pop will call up Malik and give him some burn during the rest of the season. Of course, nothing short of a miracle will win it all this year. Very depressing, but I will still be wearing my Spurs fan jerseys and shouting at every game. It would be nice to see some emerging young stars show up on our team during the play offs.

I am kind of saddened about this. Somehow, someway the playoffs won't be the same without the Manumeister. I won't beat on my chest to any Spurs fan in here. I could only imagine what you guys are going through. I don't know what I'd do if one of our key Laker players went down right now. :wow

Very well put. That's exactly what it appears to be. It seems like a wasted year. In fact, with Hill on the bench, it's difficult to tell where last season ended and this one began.

all we can do is to speculate on when manu will return. in medical practice, there is an adage- not all patients are exactly the same, even if they have the same medical diagnosis. so the time frame for his return is still in the air, unless the medical staff exactly state the extent of his injury.

A tough call must be made, what are we gonna do mith TD since he is not 100%, I'd say keep playing but in the big picture I'd prefer to preserve him form next season, assuming ww have enough talent for next season, and some good gas on TD + Manu's tank.

Probably is time to consider TP as the next big star in town, so start creating a team around him.

Man, this is just a weird ending to the story of the 2008-09 Spurs season. At least with TD in 2000, Spurs fans were hopeful each game that it could be Duncan's return. When's the last time the Spurs saw their season end during the regular season?

I don't remember hoping for Duncan to return in 2000, and the smart ass answer to your question is 1996, but I remember when David broke his finger in '92, and that pretty much killed the playoff hopes right there. Of course, that team was notorious for losing in the first round, so it probably only cost the spurs a victory or two.

I think Mason won't do a big job for the spurs in the postseason, what he is going to do won't be too much more than just a "starting SG" who has no minute during the crunch time, just like Antonie Wright on mavs though Mason is much better individually.

The biggest x-factor on spurs is Fin. Through this regular season, Fin has done a wonderful job as the starting SF of the spurs but he will have to sit back to the bench when the postseason comes. Bruce will take back the job to start for spurs at SF and use his remarkable defensive skills to lockup anyone who intends to drop points on the spurs, while Fin will act as the sixth man which had always been Manu's job. Inarguably Fin can not functions as effectively in offense as Manu could do, but his lack of creativity will be well made up by his experiences and his long-range shooting which is still awesome, and Fin is at least a lateral substitution at the defensive end.

As I said, I don't remember that. He tore his meniscus with four games to go in the regular season and ended up having surgery on it. The only talk that he might play on it was because Duncan wanted to play so bad, but he wasn't ever going to play that year. This year Duncan has a condition that's not going to be worsened by playing, and that rest won't fix. The situations couldn't be more different.

I'm so sad and disappointed for the Spurs. I'm hopeful Manu's rest and rehabilitation will bring him back hungrier than ever to win another Championship next year. The problem is we need some youthful pieces. Apparently, we can't have Manu and TD playing heavy minutes all year long. I also don't want the team to kill Tony by having him play heavy minutes to compensate for resting the other big 2. We need more youthful talent.
Timmy manned up and took less money when he renegotiated his contract. Holt needs to follow suit and loosen up those purse strings. I know Timmy, Manu and Parker have one more Championship together, but it's time to pull the plug on the old vets like Finley, Bowen, JV, Oberto and Udoka. With Mason, Gooden and Hill, we have some sort of beginning but we need more talent. The off season is a time for rest and renewal for the Spurs. The summer will be the time for the front office to man up to all the other teams that have been infused with youthful talent.

As always, I'm just reading the news this morning. What a way to wake up. :depressed

It's unfortunate for the team, but especially for Manu. I hope this doesn't turn out to be career ending. It would be a shame for him to go out like this.

As far as playing for Argentina this past summer, I just don't understand all the anger and hate towards Manu. All along, it has sounded as though his injury was a ticking time bomb, and it would have happened at some point.
Because he played in the Olympics, it happened sooner rather than later. It gave him time to get surgery and rest up for a while.
It is what it is. Time to let it go. :deadhorse

As for the rest of the season and the playoffs - I'm with the person who said they'd rather have an injured Manu out than a Manu who is half healthy on the court. I'm paraphrasing.
At least now, Pop can shift the lineups around and try to make something happen.
Everyone has been bitching about Mason as the backup point guard, and now that issue will be fixed.
The point is, maybe all of this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Maybe all is not lost. We will soon know.

Get well, Manu!
And Go Spurs! :huddle:

The Spurs are now forced to do what they should have done right after Ginobili's insubordination regarding his Olympic shit and dump his useless, crippled ass. The $10 million plus annually that they waste on this Argentinian piece of shit will buy some RELIABLE and CONSISTENT talent in the NBA.

Screw all this, David Robinson former Spurs franchise player and two time champion was elected into the basketball hall of fame. In other news Spurs fans look forward to the 2009-2010 season when a new movement infused with youth and veterans look to pound the league with a steady dose of championship vigor ala 2005 post 2004 ousting. Spurs fans are overly optimistic siting Lakers and Cavs fans as having had their 15 minutes of fame and look to reclaim what has belong to them for the past decade.

The Spurs are fucked this season for sure, but if the right decisions are made after the first round playoff exit, the glass is actually half full. :toast

What an appropriate moment to use this: :pimpslap

Pop loves Manu, and barring that this injury turns into career-ending, I'm fairly sure he'll get extended next season. Now, when that happens, please do us all a favor and GTFO.
BTW, pink looks great on you.

There sure is a lot of horse shit floating around this thread that true fans should be ignoring. I guess I take a more selfish view of this situation. Of course as a Spurs fan I feel bad that the team has suffered the loss of a key player. But for me I will miss the sheer joy I get from watching him play. The unbelievable passes, shots, hustle...things you just don't often see. I enjoy it because every game you see something different. Rarely do you see a player compete to his fullest every minute he is on the court, whether it is a playoff game or a game in Chicago in November. Not always perfect, but always giving it everything. I laugh at those who talk about the foul in 06. The thing I remember about that game is being down 20 and only one guy playing like he felt the Spurs still had a chance. Never giving up and along with TD, putting his team in position to win a game that looked hopeless, where most of his teammates had given up. Spurs fans should feel damn lucky to have had the privilege of watching this guy play the game we love. No more doom and gloom and playing the blame game. This stuff happens in sports all the time. He will be back and so will the Spurs.

so,

anyone upset at Manu for the olympics?

No because this could've happened during training camp, preseason, regular season.

I have no issue with Manu's decision to play for the Olympic team.

I felt compelled to register for this forum and voice my condolences, I have always admired the organization and been an enormous fan of Pop, Buford, Duncan and TP, for an organization to stay on top for a decade and counting is truly remarkeable in todays NBA. although I am a lifelong Laker fan I have always enjoyed the rivalry with the Spurs dating back to when Tony was a lightning fast erratic point guard (he's still lightning fast but no longer as erratic) and Duncan could not hit free throws in the post season, to watch them mature and battle for the last decade with my team (aside from those 3 years immediately Post-Shaq) has been a lot of fun.

I dont think San Antonio can get it done without a healthy Ginobili and it is unfortunate because i always hate to see players (especially ones I like) get hurt and a team that is capable of winning it all not be able to compete at full strength when it matters most.

heres to Pop and Buford working their magic to retool the roster and have the Spurs back to contender status for the next decade.

I had already lowered my expectations for the playoffs. This Spurs team is just not up to the task and I'm not sure where the blame should be placed. And now that Manu is out for the rest of the season, I'm just wanting this whole miserable year to be over! :depressed :cry

It's been quite a long time since a Spurs team has been bitten this bad by the injury bug - but I guess we were due. Sucks big time and I just hope we can get completely healthy and regroup during the off-season and then break the even-year curse and win it all in 2010!!! :lobt2:

BTW - I think it's also highly unlikely that the Celtics repeat - they've been hit with injuries too; and with KG not at 100%, I don't think they're going very far either.

I think we're going to see the Lakers and Cavs in the Finals this year - which will make Stern happy as a pig in slop! I can see the ads now - KOBE vs. LEBRON :smchode:

off topic here but I wonder...do you think Manu will show up to the home games, regular and playoff now that his season is over? I certainly hope so...we don't get many SA games in la-la land but during home playoff games, I think it would lift spirits to see him there....it would certainly lift mine! :king

BTW, does anyone know if he has entered any new postings on his facebook page since last night?

I don't remember hoping for Duncan to return in 2000Really? The Spurs listed him as day-to-day and Pop kept talking as if it were a real possibility that he'd play the next game. Local and national media had around the clock coverage each day regarding whether or not Duncan was going to play that game. Pop even hinted that Duncan was 100% going to play if the Spurs made it to the second round. The pointed out that Terry Porter tore his meniscus earlier in the season and ended up only missing a couple games.

As it turns out, Duncan actually wasn't ever close to playing. But as it was happening, Pop (and even Duncan) were feeding the hope that #21 was about ready to play.

and the smart ass answer to your question is 1996, but I remember when David broke his finger in '92, and that pretty much killed the playoff hopes right there. Of course, that team was notorious for losing in the first round, so it probably only cost the spurs a victory or two.IIRC, in that case, Robinson might have been able to go if the Spurs would have advanced to the second round without him. I know he was supposed to be able return either in the first or second week of May.

But yeah, that team winning a first round series without Robinson was about as likely as this team winning a championship without Manu.

That's true. Duncan tore his meniscus on April 11 with four games left in the regular season. They listed him as day-to-day and never said he was officially out for the playoffs or anything. People were even saying that he might play through it and it wasn't going to get any worse by playing, but the Spurs never intended to play him at all.

I'm not doubting your facts. I didn't live in the area at the time, so I wasn't subjected to 24 hours a day of propoganda and wishful thinking. If I heard any of it, it's possible that I simply just didn't believe what they were saying. That season ended when he landed after that dunk, and I remember seeing the replays on the news and thinking exactly that.

Now that you mention it, I do remember that they just needed to try to get through the first round, but it just wasn't going to happen. They played really hard and were just overmatched by the Suns.

This should come as no surprise. Unfortunately, that's what happens to older players. They become more susceptible to injury. It's simply a consequence of age.

BTW - I think it's also highly unlikely that the Celtics repeat - they've been hit with injuries too; and with KG not at 100%, I don't think they're going very far either.:

See my preceeding comment.

That's why I'm imploring the FO for having better roster balance, in terms of both talent, skill and age. That's where I blame the Spurs. It's no secret that Manu's incredible talent cannot be easily replaced by a single player. Yet, if the team wasn't relying on a group featuring Finley, Bowen, and Udoka, the void wouldn't be as significant and collectively the team would be better positioned to make up for his absence.

Manu brother Leandro told to Clarin, Argentina newspaper that the Spurs told Manu to skip the Olympics but Manu decided to pay and now is paying the price.

He also said the Spurs will put a clause in his next contract that will keep him out of Argentina NT

“Quando Manu for renovar contrato, posso dizer, seguramente, que o San Antonio pedirá, por meio de uma cláusula, que ele não volte a defender a seleção argentina”, afirmou Leandro.
I think our friends from Argentina can give us more details on this.

You cannot put a clause in a contract (as far as I know) that would prohibit a player from playing with his country.

If you can put a clause prohibiting someone from riding a motorcycle or going skiiing, I'm not sure how playing in highly competitive international basketball tournaments is any different.

Why not? Is there an NBA rule against it? Under an employment contract, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that if both parties agree.

2 years ago, the NBA send a memo to the league after Spurs asked Manu not to play with his NT. Some extracts of this memo :

This is a reminder that, under the NBA's agreement with FIBA, NBA teams are required to permit their players to play in certain major national-team competitions, provided that adequate insurance is obtained.
These include the Olympics, world championships, continental championships [such as the European Championships], and relevant qualifying tournaments.
The NBA/FIBA agreement also provides that NBA teams may not take any steps that are intended to deter players from playing in such competitions

If you're under contract, you have an obligation to your employer to keep yourself prepared for work and not take unnecessary risks which would otherwise impact your ability to fulfill your contractual obligations. Regardless of whether it's allowed to be explicitly stated in a contract or not, it's a moral issue for the employee.

So the question really is: Is playing for your national team in the off season considered an unnecessary risk?

That's not a question I care to take a stab at......
