WASHINGTON — The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.
PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.
"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.
"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.
"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."
Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.
Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."
Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

PETA isn't upset. They know that if they say something about Obama the national media will run with it. This is just a chance to get their name out there. It's free advertising. They're not retarded, they're clever.

That's not clever. It just makes them look stupid, not that they needed any help. Watch Penn and Tellers Bullshit episode on PETA, pretty funny. It makes them petty, whiny, and foolish for caring about a stupid little fly. :wgaf:

We all know spiders are the most dangerous animal in the universe. If my life is on the line I will fight back.

They don't care whether or not you think they're stupid. They just care whether or not you thought about them today. And you did. Is it stupid to make a fuss over a fly? Of course. But today all across America people are thinking and talking about PETA. Even though 99.9999999999% of those people are saying "they're stupid", they're still thinking about PETA and their message. It's nation wide advertising and it didn't cost them a dime.

I'm surprised the Secret Service didn't do something about, instead leaving Obama to fend for himself.

Do they want me thinking about them, or trying to help them? I would think they would want people joining their cause, not just thinking about them. Their cause is admirable in many cases, however, they have a lot of retarded ones. They're not getting more people to join their cause by getting upset over a fly. Get upset about the cat killer in Florida. Do something productive. Saying something over a fly is ridiculous, and doesn't make people want to join them in their cause. Sure we think about them, but that's it. Now they look like idiots, and they should care if they're truly into their cause.

How many millions of dollars is that kind of free advertising worth?

What about poisonous flies? I wonder if PETA would have a problem with killing a fly that was poisonous. Or how about spiders and scorpions? Killer bees? I'm surprised that PETA hasn't came out and said that they support bestiality.

Well they oppose honey because it's exploitation of bees (not making that up) so I'm guessing they would side with killer bees.

This thread is only a little sillier than the iPod thread.
At least everyone is taking this in good humor. It's good to see once in a while. :toast
As for PETA, it's amazing to think that we're only about 100-150 years removed from hunting as a mainstay for food in many parts of the country (or less!), and we have been consistently the most advanced nation on Earth. :lol There are still many parts of the planet where hunting is a depended-upon resource.
Yes, screw PETA. Even in nature, you see animals killing each other for survival. It's.... something I like to refer to as.... the circle of life.

In a serious direction about life, death, and ethics:
I don't like to end the life of things without just cause, but a fly is just a biological machine. They have no sentience, they are just robots. If their foot detects water, they extend their proboscis and start to drink. Their stomachs are so simple that they work off a little nerve that indicates if they are full or not. If you cut this nerve, a fly will drink water until it bursts. That's not a living being that needs to have it's life protected. It has no value to other flies or even to itself outside of the instinct to avoid death and reproduce as much as possible, it only has value to people who get emotionally attached to a faceless biological robot. They feel sorry for something that can't feel itself, just because it lives.
Life in itself does not carry any worth. The ethics of life and death are based off of things like sapience, sentience, learning, feeling, person-hood, self-awareness and other things. These things are what make smashing a worm different from smashing a dog, from killing a cell from killing a person. These values are at the core of animal-rights and abortion debates.
PETA applies none of this, but sees the world in black-and-white. This goes towards all their activities, from their supposed moral viewpoints to their arbitrary decision of what is OK and not OK to eat, and to why they kill off stray pets. They are irrational and illogical. Frankly, they are a total embarrassment to the animal rights movement. As much as I like to laugh at them, they undermine the attempts to legitimately further animal rights issues.

Animal lovers worldwide now have access to more than a decade’s worth of proof that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.
PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2008, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets.
Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.
Why would an animal rights group secretly kill animals at its headquarters?

:wow
Some really damning stuff on PETA:
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/downloads/PetaKillsAnimals.pdf
On its 2002 federal income-tax return, PETA claimed a $9,370 write-off for a giant walk-in freezer, the kind most people use as a meat locker or for ice-cream storage. But animal-rights activists don't eat meat or dairy foods. And during a 2007 criminal trial, a PETA manager (testifying under oath) confirmed the obvious -- that the group uses the appliance to store the bodies of its victims.
In 2000, when the Associated Press first noted PETA's Kervorkian-esque tendencies, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk complained that actually taking care of animals costs more than killing them. "We could become a no-kill shelter immediately," she admitted.
PETA kills animals. Because it has other financial priorities.
PETA rakes in nearly $30 million each year in income, much of it raised from pet owners who think their donations actually help animals. Instead, the group spends huge sums on programs equating people who eat chicken with Nazis, scaring young children away from drinking milk, recruiting children into the radical animal-rights lifestyle, and intimidating businessmen and their families in their own neighborhoods. PETA has also spent tens of thousands of dollars defending arsonists and other violent extremists.
PETA claims it engages in outrageous media-seeking stunts "for the animals." But which animals? Carping about the value of future two-piece dinners while administering lethal injections to puppies and kittens isn't ethical. It's hypocritical -- with a death toll that PETA would protest if it weren't their own doing.
PETA kills animals. And its leaders dare lecture the rest of us?

They're not getting "free advertising", they're getting bad publicity. There's a big difference. This makes their organization seem like a joke.
Like any other organization, PETA is concerned with the bottom line. They DO want you to join and they DO want you to send checks. That's how they keep their jobs. This ordeal may not have halted somebody who was in the middle of writing a check, but it might have made a few rational thinking contributers question how PETA uses its donated resources.
Then again, I don't know how any rational thinking person could ever give their hard earned money to PETA.

People already thought PETA was a joke. So what difference does it make if the publicity is bad? Since rational thinking people aren't giving them money anyways, then it's exactly opportunities like these that they need to be looking for. They still got millions upon millions of people to think about PETA and to think about their message and it didn't cost them a penny. As far as they're concerned there's no such thing as bad publicity because no publicity at all is way, way worse. I'm not saying these guys aren't a bunch of loons, they are. But they're loons who are pretty clever in ability to garner a nationwide audience with limited financial resources.
