Team Greece for EuroBasket 2009 announced - Sep 3, 2009 (by Eurobasket News)

Head coach of the Greek National Team, Jonas Kazlauskas made a decision which 12 players will represent ex European champion in Poland. Today, he thanked Kostas Papanikolaou and Dimitris Tsaldaris for their efforts this summer.

Greece EuroBasket squad: Andreas Glyniadakis (215-C-81), Nikos Zisis (195-G-83), Kostas Kaimakoglou (206-C/F-83), Nick Kalathis (198-G-89, agency: Arik Krayn Services, college: Florida), Giannis Kalambokis (195-G-78, agency: FCM), Kosta Koufos (213-F/C-89, college: Ohio St.), Giannis Bourousis (212-C-83, agency: FCM), Stratos Perperoglou (203-G-84), Giorgos Printezis (206-F-85, agency: FCM), Vassilis Spanoulis (193-G-82, agency: Beo Basket), Sofoklis Schortsanitis (206-C-85) and Antonis Fotsis (210-F-81).

There is no doubt that the first star of this team is Vassilis Spanoulis, who averaged 14.3 ppg at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Spanoulis is coming of a great season with Panathinaikos Athens, who was Euroleague as well as the Greek champion.

Second main weapon for Team Greece could be Giannis Bourousis, who in Beijing had 11.7 ppg. Last season, he demonstrated impressive performance in Euroleague with Olympiacos.

"Baby Shaq" - Sofoklis Schortsanitis is also possible deadly weapon of Team Greece. He is visibly thinner than in the past and in great shape.

Guard Nikos Zisis is another player who is able to explode on this event. Last summer he had 5.8 ppg. He joined Italian champion Montepaschi.
Greece is placed to Preliminary Group A, together with FYROM, Croatia and Israel. In Day one Greece will meet FYROM. After that, its rivals will be Croatia and Israel (respectively).

A league of contradictions is what the Greek A1 has become these days. Franchises with massive budgets are pitted against clubs on the constant brink of bankruptcy. The domestic talent base offers a lot of value, but very tight restrictions on American imports (just two allowed per team). Some markets feature huge, passionate fan bases and NBA style arenas, compared to others who play in almost empty gyms not even suitable for some high school teams. This is a league with a terrific tradition of success, which has been spoiled somewhat by a waning national interest in basketball and the incompetence of far too many team front offices. Still, the competition level is always extremely high, as the teams are well coached, everyone plays extremely hard, the refs call the game fairly loose, and there is rarely such a thing as an easy road game.

Once considered arguably the top leagues in Europe, the Greek league has lost some of its prestige with the ascent of the Spanish, Russian and neighboring Turkish league, despite sporting one of the strongest national teams in the world and two of the most prestigious teams in the Euroleague—Panathinaikos and Olympiakos. Unfortunately, there is a huge drop-off after those two storied franchises, as once powerful organizations such as AEK Athens and PAOK Thessaloniki are trying to restore their severely tarnished images after struggling with massive debts incurred by past administrations.

No other league in Europe is as widely feared by players and agents for its instability and shoddy payment history as Greece, and as evidence we find teams such as Kavala (where Americans Billy Thomas and Will Daniels were slated to play) disbanded from the league last week, just a day before their first game. Basketball insiders will tell you with a straight face that a contract is often nothing more than a piece of paper in European basketball, and nowhere is this spirit embodied more than in the Greek league.

Greece was all over their neighbors from F.Y.R. of Macedonia on Monday afternoon as they opened EuroBasket 2009 with a convincing 86-54 victory.

Vasilis Spanoulis had 17 points in the win.

Turning point: Tip off was actually the turning point of the game, as Greece took over right from the start. Vasilis Spanoulis hit 11 first quarter points and Greece held an 18-3 lead after five minutes that kept increasing more and more until 28-10 right before the quarter buzzer. From there it was a one sided game, all the way to the 86-54 opening win.

Hero: Ioannis Bouroursis of Greece was the main reason his team enjoyed such a smooth start. The first play of Greece in the competition was to push the ball to him in the paint for a successful post-up move, and from there he continued to be a big presence on both ends of the floor. He locked the paint for the opponent to penetrate, controlled the rebounds and scored in great ease on the other side on his way to a great stat line of 11 points and eight rebounds.

Stats: F.Y.R. Of Macedonia didn't score a single two-point bucket the entire first quarter, in only three attempts. All their 13 first quarter points came from three point range or the foul line, and it was a great example of how much trouble they faced against the inside players of Greece. Their first basket inside the arc came only after 13 minutes and by then the gap was already 35-15 in favor of Greece.

Judging Spanoulis, or any other player, by how they perform in these games is ridiculous. They are offseason games played by groups of players who forms teams for a short period of time. The players then go back to their club teams. Some go back to teams that play in the world's best league, while others, like Spanoulis, go back to teams that play in lesser leagues.

I believe Spanoulis has the talent to play in the world's best league against the world's best competition. Sadly, like all native born Greek basketballers to this point in time, he chooses not to.
