Manu Ginobili
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/emanuel_ginobili.jpg A
Offense
This was one of Ginobili’s better shooting games in a while. He shot 5-for-7 from the field, 2-for-2 from beyond the three-point line and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The three days between games obviously helped Ginobili’s energy level, especially on the offensive end. He finished with 16 points in 21 minutes.
Defense
Ginobili destroyed Marko Jaric on both ends of the court. He held his former European teammate scoreless in 26 minutes of action.
Overall
The game Ginobili played Wednesday night against the Clippers is the type of game the Spurs need from him. He’s been beat up a lot and has suffered from fatigue, so the Spurs are contemplating resting him down the stretch of the season. The bottomline is the Spurs have to do whatever it takes to make sure Ginobili is fresh for the playoffs.

Bruce Bowen
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/bruce_bowen.jpg A-
Offense
After only hitting four of his last 16 shots over the previous two games, Bowen broke out of his mini-slump against the Clippers. He shot 4-for-8 from the field, while connecting on half of his four three-point attempts. He did a great job of getting out on the break and finishing.
Defense
It was another day at the office for Bowen defensively. He was all over Corey Maggette from the moment the ball was tipped. He never gave him any room at all to find any sort of a rhythm. Maggette finished 6-for-16 from the field, and had to hit some tough shots to even shoot that well.
Overall
With Duncan and Brown out of the lineup, Bowen has stepped up huge. He’s taken a bigger role in the leadership department and is playing well on both sides of the court.

Brent Barry
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/brent_barry.jpg A-
Offense
It was pretty much a flawless offensive performance by Barry. He was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, to go with four assists and one turnover in 24 minutes of action. When he is shooting like that, the Spurs are tough to beat. Even without Duncan.
Defense
His defense was pretty good for Brent Barry standards. He didn’t get beat off the dribble too much and went to the boards to pull down five rebounds.
Overall
This is how the Spurs need Barry to play. They need him to hit down shots, lead the fast breaks and get everyone involved. They need him to be the offseason acquisition that the whole league was expecting before the season.

Tony Massenuburg
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/tony_massenburg.jpg B+
Offense
Offensively, Massenburg played a physical ballgame. He roughed it up inside to finish with six points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field in 19 minutes of playing time. Too often this season he’s looked out of place and unsure of his spot in the offense. Wednesday night against the Clippers, he acted like he knew what he was doing.
Defense
Massenburg did a good job on defense and, like always, wasn’t afraid to lay the lumber. He picked up five fouls … all of which seemed to prove a point.
Overall
While Duncan has been sidelined with his ankle injury, Massenburg hasn’t fully stepped up to the plate. He’s played some ineffective minutes over the last couple weeks. Against the Clippers, he played how the Spurs need him to play.

Sean Marks
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/sean_marks.jpg B+
Offense
The one thing you have to love about Sean Mark’s offensive game is that he’s not bashful. Around the rim he’s always looking to dunk the basketball. On the perimeter he’s always looking for his shot.
Defense
Marks had a very good defensive outing against Los Angeles. In only 17 minutes of playing time, Marks had ten rebounds and two blocks. His defense has improved immensely as he’s been given an opportunity to learn the system.
Overall
Marks is making a case for himself on the Spurs’ playoff roster. He’s played exceedingly well as of late and is outplaying his competition at his position.

Glenn Robinson
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/glenn_robinson.jpg B+
Offense
Robinson is the type of shooter who could take a year off and come back and hit his first jumpshot. Actually, that’s exactly what he did Wednesday night at the SBC Center. He hit all three of his jumpers on his way to seven points in 13 minutes. Once a shooter, always a shooter.
Defense
Defense has never been the strong suit of the Spurs’ newest player. As a matter of fact, he might not have played defense in his NBA career to this point. Popovich will no doubt stress to him that he must put some effort on that side of the court.
Overall
It was a good showing for Robinson in his debut. The Spurs hope that he can add an offensive punch that can help caring them while Duncan is out.

Robert Horry
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/robert_horry.jpg B
Offense
Horry had a tough time shooting the ball Wednesday night. He hit only 2-of-7 shots from the field and 1-of-3 from downtown. The Clippers’ long and athletic bigmen gave him some trouble. However, Horry did a find job passing the ball as he finished with three assists.
Defense
Horry’s defense was solid. Though he only finished with three rebounds and didn’t have a block in his 23 minutes of play, he made it tough for the Clippers’ bigmen to get it going.
Overall
Big Shot Rob has really stepped up as the playoffs approach. Once Duncan returns to action, the Spurs will have a great power forward weapon off the bench.

Rasho Nesterovic
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/radoslav_nesterovic.jpg B
Offense
Nesterovic wasn’t effective offensively against the Clippers. He missed a variety of jumpers and chip shots inside. For the game, he finished 2-for-9. The good news is he went to the line … and hit both free throws. No news at this hour on the time and location of the parade to celebrate the accomplishment.
Defense
Five rebounds and two blocks in 26 minutes is a pretty good outing defensively for the Spurs’ center. He bothered a lot of shots, but could have done a better job on the defensive glass.
Overall
With Duncan still out for a while more, the Spurs need Nesterovic to score some on the low block. He has good moves and a good touch, he just lacks confidence sometimes. On the upcoming three-game road trip, the Spurs need him brimming with confidence.

Beno Udrih
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/beno_udrih.jpg B-
Offense
Although Udrih missed seven of his ten shot attempts from the field, Popovich has to be happy with his effort. He is always pleading with his young Slovenian point guard to be more aggressive and to compete more. Udrih also did a good job of running the offense, handing out five assists in 21 minutes of play.
Defense
He did a pretty good job defensively, although recently he’s struggled on that end of the court. He’s getting beat off the dribble a lot and has been slow to rotate at times.
Overall
Udrih has been streaky so far this season -– as most rookie point guards are. The Spurs need him to be on a good streak heading into the playoffs.

Tony Parker
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/tony_parker.jpg C+
Offense
After five minutes of action, Parker already had seven points. By the end of the game, Parker only had 11 points. That’s pretty much how it’s been going for Parker over the last month. He starts out hot offensively and then cools as the game goes on. Against the Clippers, the Spurs really didn’t need too much scoring after the first quarter, but hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come.
Defense
Parker’s defense was average. Shaun Livingston and Rick Brunson got some good looks against him and he was caught out of position at times. However, he did a good job of playing pressing the Clippers’ ballhandlers fullcourt.
Overall
Only three assists in 26 minutes isn’t good enough for the Spurs’ starting point guard. His head also didn’t seem totally into the game. With the Spurs having a bunch of games coming up, they’ll need a better effort from Parker.

Nazr Mohammed
http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/nazr_mohammed.jpg D-
Offense
The more Mohammed plays in the Spurs’ system, the worse his offense looks. Nowadays, he’s resorting to reverse layups that he either misses or gets blocked. At least the Spurs have realized he’s not a threat in the post.
Defense
Mohammed might be even more of a disappointment on defense. His rotations are horrid, he doesn’t alter shots too often and seems to only get defensive rebounds that come right to him.
Overall
The trade of Malik Rose for Mohammed isn’t looking too good for the Spurs right now. There’s no doubt that Rose would be helping the Spurs far more than Mohammed is, especially with Duncan out. Mohammed needs to turn it around quickly or else he could find himself off the playoff roster.

I give TimVP an A for these grades...What kept him from an A+ is that he was a bit tough on the big dog, who played a flat out excellent game for an allegedly washed up guy that hasn't been on the court in a year.

For the season TimVP's grades grade out at a C-... :depressed

He started out strong, but during the heart of the season his grades were scarcer than an Avery Johnson jumpshot...even worse was when he admitted on the forum that he didn't want to put the effort into doing them at times...the slacker.

SpursTalk needs TimVP to finish strong if they expect to have grades throughout the rest of the season...this means TimVP needs to follow Brent Barry's lead and step up under the pressure of the brutal finishing schedule...he can't take anymore games off and he needs to be dependable down the stretch for SpursTalk to have a sucessful grading season.

Nice post L L Cool J

I think Robinson deserved an A-, but apart form that, the grades were spot on. You could argue that Rasho was worse on offense, but I think he showed potential Also, TP needs to step up against Dallas, if only to give him more confidence

Kori Ellis
04-07-2005, 01:12 AM
Rasho's shooting was horrendous, yet still a B? What's up wit dat? He should get a B+ for defense and an F for offense....average that out and he gets a C-.

You don't measure players against each other, you measure them against their capabilities and what's expected of them. Rasho isn't really about offense, so his defense carries a lot more weight.

Also, how classic is it that Robinson missed his first FT? If that's not a sign of a Spur, I don't know what is.

exactly, for a guy that can't miss a mid range jumper, to miss a free throw is amazing.

I was just trying to explain to you that it's not about the average of his offensive and defenisve output. That's all I'm saying. You come across very abrasive and insecure with the "I'm right, you're wrong" style posts all the time. And in the last few days, I was bombarded with emails/messages regarding your behavior after you lost the Battle Blogs. So maybe you should try to ease up instead of thinking you are a know-it-all.

does NOT deserve a B after shooting 22 percent in a game

he does, if hes a defensive player

AND HAD A GOOD DEFENSIVE GAME!

WHAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND!

if he is so bad at offense, why does he take shots away from other players and take 9 of his own

Who is he taking them from, Mike Wilks???

Hes not horrible on offense, hes very talented, but for some reason he cant get it through his thick skull that he is.

Just because he had an off night doesnt mean hes NOT talented offensively.

emails? maybe from someone else...

Yes, emails. You aren't understanding -- I'm talking about people emailing to complain about you. And I don't care if you disagree or agree with me or anyone else. Disagreements make for good discussion. I was just trying to explain that the grade isn't decided by averaging the offense and defensive production.

Kori Ellis
04-07-2005, 02:02 AM
The point wasn't for you to agree with the grading system. I was just explaining what the system is -- you can write your own analysis on a completely different system and so can everyone else on the board. I was just trying to "help out" with a clarification.

But whatever.

Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich

On the game - “A lot of people had the opportunity to play and they played well. Bruce led the way establishing our defense. It was a good team win.”
On Glenn Robinson - “If he missed a shot he’d be in trouble. That’s not why we brought him in (sarcastically). He did pretty good. It’s got to be difficult (after sitting out so long). I was surprised with his rhythm. He’s a jump shooter and that’s what he does. You don’t forget how to do that.”

On playing Dallas tomorrow - “They are one of the best teams in the league. They do a great job and are as good as anybody. Playing a team like that will be a challenge. Teams are what they are and they’re not going to change their whole system (due to the coaching change).”

Glenn Robinson

On the game - “I felt real good out there. I had some good looks and got some good passes. I need to get into better shape, but I was glad my shot was going down. I felt pretty comfortable.”
“This is a championship atmosphere so I came in with a lot of energy. I was so excited I almost fouled out in the first half. My adrenaline was really flowing.”

Manu Ginobili

On the game - “I haven’t been playing very well lately. I have hustled a lot but haven’t really put a good game together. I don’t think I’m risking my body so I’ll just keep at it.”
“We could and should start playing a lot better on the road and in general. We have been winning at home, but with the exception of the Houston game we haven’t played really well. We need to step up and play better.”

Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy

On the game - “I was disappointed in the way we played tonight. I thought that we had way too many turnovers, particularly in the first half. We had 15 in the first half, but we did a little better job on turnovers in the second half. For the most part we struggled shooting the ball, part of that is the fact that they are a pretty good defensive team. We didn’t make shots, which could be the by product of the last game of a long road trip. We just didn’t play a very good game.”
On the Clippers’ defensive effort - “Defensively we were okay. We played some zone and matched up, trying to take their quickness out of the game. But we let some guys slip behind us and they hit some buckets and that is disappointing.”

On the Clippers’ most recent road trip - “We will be happy to get home, but the fatigue from the road trip didn’t play a factor in tonight’s game. We should have played a much better game than we did tonight. We just missed too many shots tonight.”

Chris Wilcox

On the game - “We just got outworked. We should have been better than we were tonight. We just didn’t play hard. We didn’t come out ready to play from the beginning. They got a lead on us at halftime and we just were not able to come back.”
On holding Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker below their season averages - “It doesn’t matter how many those guys get. We are not satisfied unless we win the game. All of that containing one guy to a certain amount of points doesn’t mean anything if you lose.”

Shaun Livingston

On the game - “They came out tonight and beat us in every facet of the game. They out worked us, they out shot us, they out rebounded us and they had more blocked shots than us. They did the hustle plays that you have to make to win the game. They just played better than us.”

Two points, Nazr box score showed 3 blocks. D- may be a little harsh as is Marks grade, what more do you want than 10 boards? He should have got an A or A- IMO.

Grades are back!
I think that Marks should get an A for his rebounding performance and for his overall contribution. This guy is on IR for 3 years and is doing a good job over Nazr and TMass. I also love the fact that he supports the guys when he isn't playing.
I am a bit disapointed with Tony's performance but he shot well 5/8 and had 1 TO.
About his "disapearance act", it isn't that bad in this game where everyone was shoting well and it was a blowout. It will be a lot more important for him to step up against Dallas today.

Marks is playing really well. How about Robinson? After he hit that first shot I felt like they all would go in. Barry has been playing much better. He got a little careless with that dribble turnover, but he was doing everything else right. Nazr has not been playing well at all. I did see him alter a few shots, but he isn't really in the flow on either end.

Wrong!

People post in this forum because it is extremely well run. It's a virtious circle. A well managed site attracts good posters who become repeat users and finaly stay for good. And the good posters make the site even better.

All the great posters in this site have posted elsewhere but decided to stay here. There's a reason for that.

Props to Kori and LJ. I will never get tired of saying it.

Got on the ESPN chat and asked Tom Tolbert about Big Dog. Here's the excerpt:

Bill (Houston Texas): Does Glenn Robinson help the Spurs? What's the skinny around the league about him?

Tom Tolbert: (11:42 AM ET ) I've never been a huge Glenn fan. He's a me-first type guy. It surprised me when he signed. He's all about offense, he can flat-out score. But he's doesn't offer much defense. Pop does a great job at getting people into his system, but this one was a little surprising. A guy that really doesn't play defense is going to the team that's known for its defense. ?? We'll see how that one works out.
