Things I learned in the last hour.
1. They don't like AIDS
2. They're not sure if black guys can be Mormon
3. There is no official mascot or sponsor for Mormonism
4. Sex and porn seems to be frowned upon but not forbidden
5. They don't know any historical facts
6. "Believe" is the default verb
7. If you stump them they transfer you to a superior wizard which is loads of fun because the next guy always thinks he knows more than the previous guy but all they end up saying the same biblical bullshit.
8. They didn't know that writing in caps meant yelling.
9. They're unsure if god approves of hermaphrodites.
Talk to these people. Get to know them. They're here for us and they're here to guide us even if they really don't know anything about religion or their religion.

True enough. As they'd tell it, political pressure from the United states Federal Government catalyzed God himself into commanding the suspension of polygamy. But that's all it is, a divinely commanded suspension. They have "prophecies" dedicated to the return of polygamy.
The idea behind polygamy being that the multiple wives compete against one another in this life for a place besides their husband's side in the afterlife, whereupon they become a wife & husband god and goddess of their own planetary system. I'm not sure what happens to all the wives who don't make the cut.

Uh, not really. But I've only read a billion books on the subject and lived 2 miles from Temple Square for oh, about 23 years, so what do I know?
edit: in fact, the restoration of polygamy is what gave rise to the FLDS movement; a series of megalomaniacs claiming to be "one mighty and strong" sent to "set in order, the house of God." i.e. to restore polygamy. It's all there in the 85th section of the D&C's.

So the US govt. telling the territory of Utah that they'll never get statehood while mormons practice polygamy just happened to coincide with God supposedly abolishing it? How dare someone be skeptical of that. :wakeup

I just looked it up and that 85th section never says anything about polygamy. That hardly qualifies as a "special prophecy" about the return of polygamy to me...especially since polygamy wasn't taught in kirtland, but rather started in nauvoo. I guess its special to the polygamists, but lumping the polygamists and lds all together is disingenuous.

I guess it had nothing to do with the US government imprisoning most of the leaders, and seizing mormon land, putting the functional existence of the church at stake. But I can see how you'd see it otherwise.

The mormon church also happened to change it's racist policy when the civil rights act of 67 passed. How convinient, no?:)

Another fun trivia fact is that is was a Mormon-owned bank (Valley Bank) provided the financing that gave rise to modern-day Las Vegas, yet Utah is the only one of two states in the country where all forms of gambling are illegal.

Another neat fact is that several years back, the Mormon church was the majority shareholder in PepsiCo. Manufacturer of delectible caffeinated beverages. The same beverages it tells it's members NOT to drink.

I live about 50 miles from Nauvoo (which is in Illinois) and have had several Mormon friends. I dated a Mormon girl for a while (hehe! Big no no for her! :lol)
Anyway, she pretty consistently defended the practice of polygamy, and openly stated that most Mormons were hoping for the reinstatement of the practice, because they feel it's what was initially asked of them by the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith is about 95% the person that Jesus Christ is to them. He's perilously close to being a deity in their eyes. They say he's a prophet, but it really sounds as if he can do no wrong.

You'd better be some head in the sand, brain-washed mormon... because if you're not, and you're trying to argue that God himself came and delivered a revelation to a territorial Utahn & mormon prophet in the mid 1800's, then well... I don't know, but it's not good.
I hate to break it to you, but God's not in the business of personally revealing himself to polygamous & self-proclaimed prophets every time it becomes politically convenient for them.

That's not what I said. I said its more likely they changed not because of some dubious political scheme to get statehood but rather because their church was going to disappear if they didn't. That's why I only said earlier you took an extra cynical approach.
