Nuggets guard J.R. Smith's tweets are raising questions among fans. Several recent posts by Smith on his page — twitter.com/jr_smith1 — are written in a way that is commonly associated with the Bloods street gang.

Words that would have a "C" in them are replaced with "K," or if a word has both in them, the "C" is removed altogether. Smith has nearly 15,000 followers on his Twitter page.

"Those are still little messages that are being transcended back to some of the neighborhoods," said Rev. Leon Kelly, executive director of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives in Denver. "Not to say in no way is he promoting a gang. But people got to understand that a lot of these kids come from gang neighborhoods. Their friends are still involved in doing what they do. Just because one was able to get out of that lifestyle, many of them don't forget where they come from."

On a post Sunday, Smith exclaimed "Vegas here I kome!" Last week he wrote that he "Kant wait to get bak in the swing of things."

A post last week, upon his release from jail, caused an online debate among Denver Post readers about the topic. Smith, at the time, thanked his fans and wrote, "I just Kame home. . . . I kouldnt have done it with out yall."

Messages to Smith and his agent, Arn Tellem, seeking comment were not returned Monday.

Smith, 23, is aware of what is posted on his account. Monday morning he implored those writing messages to "watch what you say on here it gets me in a lot of trouble!"

On June 9, 2007, Smith and two passengers were injured in a car accident on Stagecoach Road in Millstone Township, New Jersey, when the SUV he was driving collided with another car. Smith and a passenger, Andre Bell, were ejected from the vehicle at around 5:30 p.m. Smith's vehicle appeared to have gone through a stop sign and collided with the other car. Smith was taken to Jersey Shore University Hospital. Bell suffered serious head wounds before being pronounced dead on the night of June 11.

Smith's driving record included five suspensions in eight months, but was "in good standing" at the time of the crash in New Jersey. He was required to pay restoration fees and fines. Smith totaled 27 points against his record from April 2005 to January 2006, including eight violations on seven different days. Five citations were for speeding. Since the accident, he has received two more speeding tickets and three license suspensions in New Jersey.

On June 30, 2009, Smith pled guilty to causing an auto accident in which the passenger of his car was killed, after Smith drove through a stop sign and hit another car in a June 2007 accident. His friend, passenger Andre Bell, died as a result of his injuries. Smith was initially sentenced to 90 days in a Monmouth County (N.J.) jail, but 60 of those days were suspended, on the condition that he completes 500 hours of community service.

On July 31, 2009, the Denver Post reported that Smith was released from jail after serving only 24 days of his sentence

Don't see a huge deal unless he's actually involved in some serious gang activity. So he's a young immature asshole. So what? Like half of the league isn't immature and/or assholes or both. I don't care if he wants to pretend he's repping gangs unless he's actually doing criminal activity as well.

If I were a Nuggets fan, I'd be more concerned about his shot selection than whether or not he uses the letter "C" on his twitter account.

son how about you tell all of that crap to the mother of the "friend" of his who was riding with him that he killed in the car accident that was 100% his fault. or tell the two people that he hit who are both still suffering from their injuries to this day ... son you see J.R. Smith seems to think that the law doesn't apply to him ... and his 13+ traffic violations proves that. (5 of those violations came AFTER he killed his friend and injured 2 others)

son this piece of shit shows absolutely no remorse for anything he has done and stunts like this make it even worse. the dude is a joke to begin with. he was pretty much born with a silver spoon in his mouth, yet he prances around in the NBA acting as if he was raised in the streets of Compton throwing up gang signs.

You don't know much about gangs do you? And for the record, I'm not calling you out because of that, it's actually a good thing that you don't.

But you can't just rep a gang without really being a part of it. If he isn't known in his neighborhood or set as a blood, he wouldn't be able to throw up the signs without getting killed whenever he visits home. That's what they call "false flagging" in the gang world and it's something that can land you in a lot of trouble. I imagine this shithead is really a blood and that's why he does things such as running stop signs and getting his friends killed. He has that arrogant, don't give a fuck, attitude of a typical gangbanger.

What does the car accident have anything to do with throwing up gang signs? Are you saying he's never to act any other way but solemn because his friend died? If he laughs on the court, is he also not showing remorse for his friend getting killed? If he gives a high five, is he disrespecting his friend's mom? Come on.

Apparently you have trouble following your own posts in a thread you made. You created this to complain about his thuggish behavior about his spelling on his twitter account and throwing up gang signs on the basketball court and then criticized how he thought that the law doesn't apply to him. Newsflash, it's not against the law to purposely misspell words or to make hand signals on the court. You want to blast dude for subsequent traffic tickets or for running with gang bangers, fine. That's not what I said wasn't a big deal. I said him not using the letter C on his twitted page isn't a big deal. Come show me the law that says it's illegal to replace the letter C with the letter K and you got me. Otherwise, stop bring butt hurt by misspellings on the internet.

Son there are a lot of good things that athletes do that go unnoticed. Of course the bad always outweighs the good when your an athlete or a famous figure. Not trying to make excuse for what he did, but clearly it's not entirely his fault that both he and his friend at the time of the accident were not wearing their seat belts, which had they did, might have spared his friends life. However still, that doesn't excuse him from the fact that he ran a stop sign like a retard which resulted in all this, but at the same time that does not mean that he has no remorse for what he did either. I mean that was a close friend that he killed in that accident, you don't think he regrets it? As for his friends mom, she sounds very forgiving.

"He respects the Bell family and feels terrible, because this is somebody who was a good friend of his. He knew it was possible jail time. He's 23, a tough kid. He could have had 90, he got 30, and he's going to handle these 30 days and be stronger."

According to Hexstall, Bell's mother, Wanda, considered "J.R. to be like a son" and wrote a letter stating she did not want Smith to go to jail. Bell's family has filed a wrongful death suit against Smith.

"It's not like something like this happens and you just move on," Smith said Tuesday during the hearing. "I can't talk to 'Dre. . . . He's still a part of me."

Smith also apologized directly to Wanda Bell, who then blew him a kiss.
"I told her I wish the shoe was on the other foot," Smith said in court.
Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien declined comment when reached Tuesday night by The Post. The team later sent out a news release.

Pop probably would. I have no beef with Pop and actually love the hell out of him. Damn good coach and damn good person from what I've read and heard.

You on the other hand can probably take a lesson from Pop's book of grace and class and stop being such a, well,.....hater.

IRA, you're thinking of maybe?

The worst part of Boston is the south side. That's where alot of those gangs come into play. I lived on the north side of Boston... not as bad there. There's a lot of crime, but it's not very organized, afaik. Again, I haven't lived in Mass since I was 11, so things may have changed. (Except the South side... that's gonna be Irish for awhile hehe)

You are way off. Most, if not all the all athletes represent their hood in some way, shape, or fashion. Wearing the colors, the caps, throwing signs, or just hitting each other up. You're taking this way out of context.

Growing up in the worst part of LA, during the worst gang and crack epidemic of all time, you learn to adjust, and adapt to your environment. As a child, the only thing you live for is just to go outside and play with your friends. As you get older, these friends become homies. At some point between 10-13, you make a conscious decision to either play sports, become a book worm, or hustle and bang.

In most cases, if the parent is not in the house to provide, then you're going to hustle and bang. You see the older guys in your hood driving nice cars, getting the pretty women, wearing nice clothes, and flashing lots of dough. Some of these hustlers still played sports, because this is what they loved to do while growing up. If you didn't choose to play sports, you never really lose that friendship with your homie that did play sports.

In most cases, if you're a serious athlete, your coach, or parent will try their best to keep you away from your friends that chose the life of a hustler/gang-banger. But they fail to realize that its not always a bad thing to have homies that gang bang while in high school.

I can remember on more than one occasion catching the bus, or just walking by myself, and a car full of gang-bangers would roll up, and hit you up, (what set you from?) I would always say I didn't bang, but their would be times when that wasn't enough, and you had some knuckle head that was eying your shoes, your jewelry, cap, or he just might want to whoop your ass to show off. It would always start like this; blood, don't I know you from somewhere? If you from a blood hood, your reply would be, yeah, I think I seen you in the streets, you know a nigga name Mookie? Mookie would be that one friend that you grew up with that chose the life of a hustler/gang-banger. And that would be the end of story. If you didn't know someone, or was from a rival hood, you better start running.

Most of the athletes get major love from the gangsters. When you see them, you greet them, (what's happnin blood, or cuz,) and its accepted. If you're not from the hood, then don't act like it, cause it could come back to haunt you in more ways than one.

At some point, guys like JR have to understand that you can not take the hood into Corporate America, whether it be to play college ball, or pro ball. If you choose to go back to the hood, then it should only be to change it, or improve it. You hear about so many athletes getting robbed, shot at, or even killed because they still hang out in the hood, or they choose to surround themselves with friends that still hang in the hood. At some point, you have to make a choice.

Excellent post.

You gave everyone in here a glimpse of what happens in the real world of gang-life and what it means.

Bankrupt State economy Riots Gang war Hollywood wannabees Yeah its a veritable Shangri la. The Only People who don't realize LA SUCKS. Are the native Angelinos that haven't moved away from there. You have no perspective.

Here is a quote from an E-mail from my Cuz Cuz out in Redondo about LA,

"yeah it can get real crazy out here at the drop of a hat and for no good reason sometimes too, it's seems like everyone wants to be a movie star like Clint Eastwood "go ahead make my day kinda shit" the cold part about it is that you never know who's acting or who's foreal. yeah I love my little quiet Redondo Beach who cares if Charles Manson went to the same High School that my kids go to what difference does that make?"

gSN_AuI9S50

I was born and raised in SoCal boy. Don't come in here preaching about perspective. All major cities in the United States have a "shit-hole" element to them be it a barrio, slum, ghetto including your beloved St. Paul. Sure, L.A. and the surrounding southland has some crappy areas but being that you obviously aren't a much traveled lad, you wouldn't know. Instead, your world is Planet St. Paul and have yet to really experience the diversification of our countries cities both good and bad.

I now live here in San Antonio. Gorgeous city but it doesn't escape the reality that all major cities have; Some good folk. Some crappy folk.

We are talking about a basketball player here. And no, it wasn't a stupid comment. You must have had a real hardship early in your life Hater to think there are a**holes in all walks of life because unlike you, I know good people and smart ones at that.

JR is a thug and if he isn't a legitamate thug he sure in the hell acts like one and portrays one. I don't like that crud. I could care less what Charles Barkley said yerars ago regarding sports figures NOT BEING role models and that it was up to the parents to raise kids. That's a nice comment from that idiot but in the real world we both know kids eat up what they see on T.V.

You call yourself a Spurs fan? Tell me you would not want to see more David Robinsons playing sports than these JR types. Whether they like it or not, they DO HAVE a responsibility. But then again, what would your obvious political affiliation know about responsibility. And no, I have no hand outs.

Whats funny is most people from LA don't even know of some of the places you just mentioned, and none of it is expensive. Most states have a few highlights, and that's it. I think you can find a comfort zone even in Mississippi, but it is extremely limited.

Mississippi sucks. straight up. :)

Though to be fair, I haven't gone into the northern part of the state, only the coastal parts.

Anything other than that, you're driving to New Orleans or Mobile.

King Taco's red salsa is great, and their carnitas, carne asada, and cabeza are outstanding. Sadly, their al pastor is crap compared to what you get from the street vendors in Mexico though (as is all other al pastor I have ever had in the US). My favorite East LA place is El Tepeyac though; their guacamole and red enchilada sauce are maybe the best I have ever had, and the Hollenbeck machaca is an outstanding burrito.

Stop it Bum! All I've got here is this lousy Taco Cabana stuff. Not bad if your really hungry but this Tex-mex crap doesn't come close to anything back home. There are some local dives around here in S.A. in the southside and west side owned by nationals that put out REAL Mexican food. The perpetual argument here with my local San Antonio-native friends is that Tex Mex is it's own cuisine and leave it at that. Don't dishonor REAL Mexican food by calling Taco-Cabana, Las Palapas or any of these other joints REAL. It's insane.

Taco Cabana is one of the best fast food places I have found in this nation. It ain't King Taco, but it beats the hell out of Del Taco. Taco Cabana makes great chicken fajitas. Las Palapas makes great breakfast tacos too - carne guisada, chilaquiles, and barbacoa are my favorites. Texas barbacoa is seasoned differently or something from Cali cabeza, and I prefer the Texas stlye. As for Texas guisada (brown) vs Cali guisada (red) on enchiladas, I like both. Cali definitely puts Texas to shame on pork and seafood, but the situation is reversed on beef. Cali/NW Mexico tacos are too fucking small too.

The MEDIAN housing cost in LA is nearly 400k that means that a person or household need to earn 160k a year to JUST afford a 400k mortgage..

The Median Household income for California is 74k.. That means that the majority of people living in your state can't afford a house in LA.. Now lets go to Watts..or Compton..you name it... How many Black people can earn that amount of money?

I'm out of touch..

Your out of your mind..but that goes hand and hand with the outragouse statements Laker Fan makes...

No basis in Fact.. In reality.. in the existence of the universe they just say things and because they say them..

Then by god..

its true..

LOL. Median home price is about $360k in LA county, and if the person has decent credit (>=700), makes a decent down payment (maybe $20G), doesn't get suckered into an ARM, then the household is looking at spending less than $25G a year on that $340G 30-year mortgage even if he doesn't shop around and ends up paying 6% interest. A lot of money, but LMAO at the idea you have to pull $160G a year to pay $25G. :rollin

Damn, $400K for houses, those were the days. I live in a mining town when im not at uni, and the average 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house goes at around $800K - $1M. If you want one on the beach (a shitty beach by the way) you have to pay upwards of $1.5M. This is all for just your basic house.

And the town is nothing but a working town - nothing really to do in terms of social activity.

Property tax on a $360000 house in LA county is about $4300. That's offset and then some by the tax credit you get from the federal government, cutting about $20G off your taxable income (25% on $54G).

no you don't then insurance.. your 25 g is mor like 35 or 40 g wich is 34000 a month which is 40 k a year..

So you're paying $15G/yr in insurance? Now I can see why you're such a miserable fuck.

now if the median income for the state is 75k then they can't afford that mortgage already... so double that 160 at 45 percent tax rate..

Um what? Double the income so he's now paying 36% fed, 9% state? I guess it is convenient so the family just misses out on that nice tax break on the home. :lol

you state taxes 88 k a year gross income which is about half of that hosing obligation.. now food..now cars..now add healt insurance..

You state taxes? Why did we double the income again? Why don't you throw in a sick grandma and maybe a nasty criminal case too?

now food..now cars..

Cars? How many brand new cars do you want? How about Laker season tickets too?

now add healt insurance..

He's pretty fucked on that unless his employer is giving him something decent. Welcome to America.

and that using YOUR figure..

My figure is pretty easy to calculate; annuities aren't exactly like solving PDEs.

and MEDIAN is not an average there are more homes more expensive than that..

It's like you don't even understand what a median is. Averages are skewed by outlier samples... i.e., the fact that the Hiltons live in a giant mansion in Hollywood Hills doesn't have a whole lot to do with the price a typical (i.e., median) home fetches in the valley.

My aunt has a ol hose in redondo OLd and its on the books for 700k..

No shit a house on the far west side of town near the Pacific is far more expensive than one in the city itself. Who would have predicted that?

:nope Your insane. That's a crap hole. If you like Tex-Mex stuff, go for it. Just don't call it a Mexican food joint becuase it's far from it.

Then by god.

its true..

Son,

Just stay up there in your wintery tomb and play dolls in your igloo. All cities have their issues including yours. Look at you; you still live with your parents. :lol
