Nuggets guard J.R. Smith's tweets are raising questions among fans. Several recent posts by Smith on his page — twitter.com/jr_smith1 — are written in a way that is commonly associated with the Bloods street gang.
Words that would have a "C" in them are replaced with "K," or if a word has both in them, the "C" is removed altogether. Smith has nearly 15,000 followers on his Twitter page.
"Those are still little messages that are being transcended back to some of the neighborhoods," said Rev. Leon Kelly, executive director of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives in Denver. "Not to say in no way is he promoting a gang. But people got to understand that a lot of these kids come from gang neighborhoods. Their friends are still involved in doing what they do. Just because one was able to get out of that lifestyle, many of them don't forget where they come from."
On a post Sunday, Smith exclaimed "Vegas here I kome!" Last week he wrote that he "Kant wait to get bak in the swing of things."
A post last week, upon his release from jail, caused an online debate among Denver Post readers about the topic. Smith, at the time, thanked his fans and wrote, "I just Kame home. . . . I kouldnt have done it with out yall."
Messages to Smith and his agent, Arn Tellem, seeking comment were not returned Monday.
Smith, 23, is aware of what is posted on his account. Monday morning he implored those writing messages to "watch what you say on here it gets me in a lot of trouble!"

On June 9, 2007, Smith and two passengers were injured in a car accident on Stagecoach Road in Millstone Township, New Jersey, when the SUV he was driving collided with another car. Smith and a passenger, Andre Bell, were ejected from the vehicle at around 5:30 p.m. Smith's vehicle appeared to have gone through a stop sign and collided with the other car. Smith was taken to Jersey Shore University Hospital. Bell suffered serious head wounds before being pronounced dead on the night of June 11.
Smith's driving record included five suspensions in eight months, but was "in good standing" at the time of the crash in New Jersey. He was required to pay restoration fees and fines. Smith totaled 27 points against his record from April 2005 to January 2006, including eight violations on seven different days. Five citations were for speeding. Since the accident, he has received two more speeding tickets and three license suspensions in New Jersey.
On June 30, 2009, Smith pled guilty to causing an auto accident in which the passenger of his car was killed, after Smith drove through a stop sign and hit another car in a June 2007 accident. His friend, passenger Andre Bell, died as a result of his injuries. Smith was initially sentenced to 90 days in a Monmouth County (N.J.) jail, but 60 of those days were suspended, on the condition that he completes 500 hours of community service.
On July 31, 2009, the Denver Post reported that Smith was released from jail after serving only 24 days of his sentence
He is a truly worthless piece of , sons. I don't know how somebody can root for such an immature asshole.
He's a good player, but it would be hard to have to root for him on your team. I'd rather see Bruce Bowen put on the blue and green before JR Smith.
No doubt JR has Talent! However
JR's Talent<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<JR's stupidity
Ah, self-awareness.Monday morning he implored those writing messages to "watch what you say on here it gets me in a lot of trouble!"
so those signs he was flashing during the playoff game were gang signs. i knew it
fukkin' lame... i kan't believe the bs that is "this player is gang related by what he says and or does on and off the kourt". total bs!
Told you stupid ers he was throwing up B's in the re ed raptor dance.
raptor dance>
you were all cheering for him when he was lighting up the Lakers in Game 4 of the WCF.
Ah yes, great memories..![]()
yea, and like you wouldn't be rooting for Kobe in that hotel room in Colorado?!![]()
Don't see a huge deal unless he's actually involved in some serious gang activity. So he's a young immature asshole. So what? Like half of the league isn't immature and/or assholes or both. I don't care if he wants to pretend he's repping gangs unless he's actually doing criminal activity as well.
If I were a Nuggets fan, I'd be more concerned about his shot selection than whether or not he uses the letter "C" on his twitter account.
^^^I'm more worried about fatass Karl subbing Anthony Carter in for him whether he's playing well or not.
So he wears powder blue 16 out of 24 hours in the day and he decides to join the bloods? Idiot's gonna get Stonewall Jackson'd one of these days.
reminder of what people are referring to in the playoffs

son how about you tell all of that crap to the mother of the "friend" of his who was riding with him that he killed in the car accident that was 100% his fault. or tell the two people that he hit who are both still suffering from their injuries to this day ... son you see J.R. Smith seems to think that the law doesn't apply to him ... and his 13+ traffic violations proves that. (5 of those violations came AFTER he killed his friend and injured 2 others)
son this piece of shows absolutely no remorse for anything he has done and stunts like this make it even worse. the dude is a joke to begin with. he was pretty much born with a silver spoon in his mouth, yet he prances around in the NBA acting as if he was raised in the streets of Compton throwing up gang signs.
