Free agent guard Von Wafer has signed a two-year, $10 million deal to play for Olympiakos, the same Greek team that landed Linus Kleiza from the Nuggets earlier this week.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard will leave for Greece on Friday, said Giovanni Funiciello, who is Wafer’s international agent.

The contract will allow Wafer to opt out after one season, but only to sign with an NBA team. Wafer confirmed the deal Wednesday after it was reported by KRIV-TV in Houston.

Wafer, 24, averaged 9.7 points and shot 39 percent from 3-point range for the Rockets in 2008-09. He made about $800,000 in his only season in Houston.

Funiciello said the offer from the Greek team was the best one Wafer got over the summer.

“Financially, he wasn’t going to get that type of an offer in the NBA,” Funiciello said. “As far as I knew, he really didn’t have anything concrete as far as the NBA was concerned.”

The Greek club team also recently signed former Denver forward Linas Kleiza.

Denver Nuggets officials said this week that Kleiza has agreed to a two-year deal with Olympiakos worth more than $12 million.

VW: Actually, this is my first time outside the U.S. and I can tell you: Athens is beautiful, amazing. I just saw the Arena where I'm going to play this season and it's fantastic. Huge. I'm just happy that people out here understand English (laughs).

Can you feel history around you there?

VW: I'm yet to see all the buildings and temples, but I'm specially excited to see the place where Olympics were born.

You were one of the most coveted U.S. players in Europe. What was the main factor for you in order to decide to accept Olympiacos' offer?

VW: I just wanted a situation where I can be a better player, a situation where I can help my family out a lot more... That was pretty important to me.

You are now among the best paid American players in Europe. What does that mean to you?

VW: That means a lot. I worked real hard in the NBA, just felt good to be recognized as a good player that plays hard. And I will play hard this season, as I always do.

Even AEK old Greek league arena has been sitting empty for a couple years now.

They were using it for finals of the Greek Cup tournament. They switched to Panionios arena for that now. They have a shopping meet sitting inside the arena now.:rolleyes:blah

But anyway this is the arena they used to use for Greek cup final (now they use the big one of Panionios) but it is just sitting there empty and with a shopping meet being held in it.

Olympiacos is building a new arena of 14,000 (they canceled the 20,000 plans because of economy). The new Olympiacos arena will be built to modern features that no NBA arena has currently.

Panionios is building a new modern 5,000 arena just for when they play games in Greek league.

The Larissa clubs will eventually be merged into one and they are getting a renovation project to their arena for 2013 Mediterranean Games.

Kolossos is building a new 5,000 arena.

Irakleio already has the 6,500 arena they just won't use it unless they get back in top division.

Panathinaikos was building a new arena but they canceled it and instead the Greek state will do another upgrade of OAKA for them and the senior national team that mainly use it.

And there are 4 big and new arenas just sitting empty.

I think it's very safe to conclude that several A1 clubs continue to play in smaller, shittier venues like those pictured in the thread for economic reasons, and I have no problem with that. If the Toros tried to play in the Frank Erwin Center, they wouldn't have stayed here more than one season. They were toying with the idea of playing in an even smaller venue than they do now to get better scheduling. I probably would have canceled my season tickets in that case, as bench seating is a deal breaker for me.
