Never said I was.
Duncan was on my radar early, I was in Rhode Island when he considered going to Providence College before he chose Wake. I followed him to the Spurs.
I was an NBA fan long before Duncan, but he's the reason I'm a Spurs fan and I've never claimed otherwise. :)

Ok sorry, got a little sidetracked by a jackass....Alright well what can I say? I personally don't feel like I know more than other fans just because the Spurs have actually won. I just know and feel differently about the reg season than I used to. For example, reg season can sometimes mean nothing. At least make the playoffs, and all they have to do is play thier best 16 games of basketball. Also if a team has a great reg season, does it really mean anything at the end of it if you lose?

rooting for a winning team does not make you any smarter ...
but it does gicve you insight and perspective ...
you also raise your standards after winning a title ...it's why the spurs fans here are so hard on POP, RJ etc.
once you EXPECT to win you demand greatness
when you havent won you put up division and conference chamipionship banners ...

If you get "insight" and "perspective" by watching people you've never met win a championship then so does everyone else who watched the same playoffs you watched.
PS - They're nationally televised games, so that means everyone in the country has access to the same thing you claim gives Lakers fans insight and perspective.
The fuck? I'm willing to bet that some random Bobcat or Grizzlies fan has more 'insight' and 'perspective' than 90% of laker fans.
Probably, considering most LA fans live outside of Cali, have never seen Staples, and have been "diehards" for about 4-5 years max.

claim that their championships make is so they know more than Mavs and Suns fans, I must say that I'm impressed with the NBA championship(s) you have won. If you don't mind, could all of you tell me what year you won it, and what your jersey number was (or if you were on the coaching staff). It's funny Laker/Spurfan has to put this before basically saying it does make you smarter because deep down they know how douchestained, stupid and moronic it would be to actually say it makes you smarter.
Have any of you ever applied for a job and said, "Since I'm a Lakers fan I have more insight and perspective than the average person," according to the above post it would be perfectly logical to do so.

You guys can poke fun if you want ...
So you guys don't agree that playing on a losing team does not breed bad habits? That you may start to play more selfishly work less hard and take shortcuts?
Same way rooting for a losing team seeps in to the culture you expect the worst, blame the refs, come up with conspiracy theories etc ...
INSIGHT and PERSPECTIVE are not THE SAME ...INSIGHT just means you see winning you are sround winning you read quotes from winners, you read interviews by WINNERS ...
Those that say you don't gain any insight from CLOSELY following a team would probably argue that watching reality trash TV doesnt kill any brain cells or watching 60 mins or CNN doesnt provide any "insight"
The perspective you come with when you root for a title team is that you realize that al that time you spend watching, posting on sites like these there is a payoff... OF COURSE the fanbase that is ripping my post will say it means nothing to root for a winner ...how WOULD THEY KNOW?
Goran Dragic

SOME of you started in the LAST decade so not put me in the same class with the bandwagon laker fans ... I was here before Kobe will be there after Kobe my cast was set when Magic put on the greatest NBA Finals performance ever against the SIXERS ...that was the FIRST NBA game I ever watched ... and Magic was and still is my favorite player of all time ...
I was at Staples for 2000 WCF
I was there when the Lakers lost at the AT&T on Mason's jumper
I was there in the playoffs when the lakers were swept by Utah (FORUM)
Magic johnson's retirement ceremony
Kobe's breaking Jerry West's record in memphis ...
Lakers vs Blazers in 1982
I could go on ...but don't ever question my dedication to my squad ...I stayed with them through the 90's when we sucked ...

I do agree. That'd be relevant if anyone in this thread played for a losing or winning team.
I went to suns website after the Horry incident ...don't TELL me (even though i agree they got screwed) was a result of a "losing culture" ...
Or that the Spurs ESPECIALLY after duncan's 3 a few years back did not gain a mental edge ...I
don't believe the current Suns players OR FANBASE even believe you guys can beat a Duncan led Spur team ...
How many posters on here said JR's miss was part of the "spur curse" ...AGAIN loser's mentality ...
another example some Lakers fans (casual)are scared of the Blazers think we should be worried if we meet 1st round ...
BUT the real fans know come playoffs WE OWN the Blazers EVEN when they have the better team.
Magic upset them in 1990 and lakers kept them at bay last decade ...but you get that from being around winning ...something many here ihave no clue about ...

Anyway I appreciate the debate ...just make sure you don't mistake whta I said ...
I don't speak for ALL Laker fans but to say that watching and closely following a team that is about winning doesnt have an effect is short-sighted.
To say that a losing fanbase cant be intelligent about basketball is ignorant as well.
The OP was moaning that the champion fanbase think they know more and Im not saying they do but you do have access to better players, better coaching, better play-calling and better fron-office management.
Every title team has all of teh aove ...being around that even in the stands or watching on TV has an effect whether you want to admit or not ...

Posters bring up the championships just like non-championship team fans troll about regular season standings/wins/other bullshit.
Hell, what else are these damn icons for : :lobt2: :lobt: :flag:
The only respectable non-Spurs fanbase around here are the Pistons anyway; and they've at least some glory days to look back on :toast

The way people talk about how they won championships on this board he expects a few.

Whether you choose to accept it or not, when you watch a shitty team the majority of the time, especially when you follow one religiously, you have a distorted view of basketball, and less total knowledge than those who religiously watch teams that win.
Because you only watch your team and never games that don't involve your team. :toast

Are you saying watching quality does not help one learn more? I mean, it is like school. You go to Harvard and you are likely smarter than someone who goes to community college even though you are both in school.

I'm saying I watched the same quality playoff basketball as Lakerfan and Spurfan did.

That's the wrong analogy. It's like saying you only check out shitty books from the library and not the classics. No matter what team you root for, you have access to League Pass, live streams via the Internet, and then the playoffs if your team isn't involved. A true student of the game wouldn't consign himself to only watching his team play, whether that's the Lakers or the Nets. How are you expected to have informed opinions of other teams and other players? His premise is that you don't have access to watching quality, championship-caliber basketball, and that's wrong.

If you don't mind, could all of you tell me what year you won it, and what your jersey number was (or if you were on the coaching staff). I'm sorry, I'm just amazed at how lucky I am to be posting on a message board with so many NBA champions.

To answer your question DPG, yes, someone who has watched every Spurs game since 2005 and nothing else would know more about basketball than someone who has watched every Suns game and nothing else since 2005. That's rarely the case.

I know at one time I used the original argument to flame a debate but i don't think that basic premise is true. That would be silly. But I would say watching a smart team, with a smart coach does give you some insight on playing the game the right way and if you watch 82, 16 or 162 of those over time how could that not have a positive effect on your sports knowledge? It doesnt mean it always does or that losing teams have dumb fans ...but to dismiss it completely is probably short-sighted. Again not saying i buy it. Just playing devil's advocate

For the sake of argument's sake I will respond to this.
While watching a good team play can help you learn about the game, there are also many other ways to learn. Just watching any team, (NBA, college basketball) and listen to the commentators. If somebody does a little thing right, they will acknowledge what they did, and if they didn't they will criticize and tell them what they needed to do.
Another thing that you're forgetting is that great teams like the Lakers have superstars who have talents that none of us could ever dream of having. If Kobe has a sick crossover, drives by everybody, and dunks over a 7 footer does that mean any of us could learn to do that just by watching?

Bump appreciate the honest response. Like I said I did NOT agree with the premise ...just looking at it from another side.
Let me ask you this ... If you wanted to learn about soccer. do you think you would learn more by watching the champions League or MLS? Does that mean MLS fans are dumb and European soccer fans are not? No. But most hardcore fans would advise you to watch English premier level soccer to learn the sport. Do you lose anything by not being able to bend the ball like the best in their league? No. But you do learn to appreciate the value of elite level set pieces ...another example, you could watch the WNBA and see sometimes better fundamentals thanthe NBA. however you would miss the speed, atleticism or the momentum shift of a dunk on someone ...by watching lower quality of play you do miss some of the finer nuances of the sport ...
That is all I am saying ..laker fans or spur fans are not better than non title fans, they are just luckier or bandwagon fans in some cases. But they do get the benefit of seeing basketball at it's best. And i do believe they learn a bit in the process ..it may not be much but something if they pay attention.

I just think that it's sometimes hard to learn fundamentals watching professional sports players because they have talents that none of us will ever posess. And if they do give out "tips" it's usually very vanilla stuff that you can learn from a lot of people. The only way I think that it pays to watch good teams is if you are completely new to a sport, and since I don't know jack about soccer then ya, I would watch English Premier leagues if I was just getting into it.
For me, I learned everything by playing in high school, practicing, and listening to coaches. I grew up in Plano and played 2 years varsity at Plano Sr. High (didn't you say that's where you live?). I watched the NBA religiously in the early 2000's and learned relatively little compared to what I learned from my coaches.
The Lakers were a good team, but I didn't learn a lot just watching Shaq dunk on 7 footers and Kobe swishing contested shots.
The Kings were a fundamental team, but they just used a million variations of the backdoor cut.
The Spurs were good as well, but I knew I would never be as good as Tim Duncan.

Yeah I work in Plano, live in Frisco/Colony area ...
I agree you will learn more from coaches than just watching of course. As a player you should be watching instructional videos not games to learn fundamentals. but how to read defenses in any sport comes from watching games and gametape IMHO ...and the better quality of play helps that. Anyway I think we are cool Im trying not be the antagonistic egotistical Laker fan. Yes we have a good team and i am proud and i love to talk trash, but i am trying to do it without being an ass,. yes i have got sucked in a few times riht after the title because there was a lot of bitter hate flying ...but i have enjoyed your post and even ambchang's today.
Im trying not be the antagonistic egotistical Laker fan.
Yeah I know it just made for an interesting discussion and different people will have different opinions.
Too sum up my opinion, I think that the NBA is a lot more about 1on1, and talent prevailing over lesser talent. Of course team's run styles of offenses (pick and roll, triangle) but they're pretty vanilla and I don't think you can learn a whole lot from the NBA unless you're fairly new to basketball.
On a side note, I think watching college basketball gives you a lot of different looks to the game that you don't see in the NBA. The different styles of zones, presses, motions that you don't get when you go professional.

I felt utter relief when Artest hit in Game 7 two months ago, but, when Duncan hit that 3 I was just overjoyed. I remember I took the boys to Olive Garden to celebrate that one.

:lmao @ all the faggots trying to justify feeling all proud and good about themselves for what someone else accomplished
it is called human nature......when you root for someone to do something and they do it, you cheer and are proud...whether it is a pro sporting event, the olympics, our troops kicking ass on foreign soil, or a family member or friend academically, athletically, or artistically.
I guess you only cheer and feel proud about your own accomplisments. I guess you never cheer or smile for others. I mean we wouldn't want you to be a silly faggot for cheering on your kid to win the spelling bee, do great in the school play, or make the winning score in the game.....
Your logic is foolish, assinine, and illogical. People like you make it so easy to bash Mavs fans.
