claim that their championships make is so they know more than Mavs and Suns fans, I must say that I'm impressed with the NBA championship(s) you have won. If you don't mind, could all of you tell me what year you won it, and what your jersey number was (or if you were on the coaching staff). I'm sorry, I'm just amazed at how lucky I am to be posting on a message board with so many NBA champions.

Whether you choose to accept it or not, when you watch a shitty team the majority of the time, especially when you follow one religiously, you have a distorted view of basketball, and less total knowledge than those who religiously watch teams that win.

This has been talked about ad nauseum. It is human nature to associate with teams you root for and refer to them as your team. The team is an extension of the community. I refer to LA as my city. Do I have to be an employee of the city to do so? Fans have a direct impact on the team they support both emotionally and finiancally. I think refering to the team you root for and support by using words such as "my", "we", or "our" is common and perfectly acceptable. It's what being a fan is all about.

That being said, I can completely see why Mav's or Sun's fans wouldn't want that personal connection with their respective teams. It's very difficult to associate with losers.

Are you proud to be an American? Do you feel good about how our country has come to the support of many throughout the world? Are you proud of the way "we" kicked Germany and Japan's ass in WWII? Or since you accomplished nothing along those lines do you refer to the USA as "they" when discussing such topics?

It's arguable (and IMO pretty fucking probable) that fans play a role in the outcome of games (there's a reason teams with home court advantage have a higher winning %), obviously the quality of the players and coaching staff play a bigger role, but no matter how small, fans still leave an imprint on games so is safe to say that when their team wins something the fans are champions too.

I personally contributed to the win. I didn't play the game no. My "personal" team won 8 national championships during my playing years. I have the rings and trophys to prove it. We were sponsored by a local business all those years and everyone in that business felt a part of the team. We would not have won shit without that support. How did you personally contribute to the Minneapolis Lakers' 1949 championship?

Come on.... So Jerry Buss cannot say we won the title in 1972? He's totally out of line unless he says Jack and the Lakers won it in 1972.

You are taking a natural human association with teams and community and making it a semantics debate.

Not really. We're the ones well aware of the fact we have no NBA championships. There are plenty of Laker/Spur fans on this board who are secure enough to stay away from this thread happy with their own personal achievements and don't need to ride the coattails of an NBA team.

Everyone loves a winner. You claim you've won state titles in high school, is this right? If this is true, then you know damn well if you play on the football and basketball team, you are superior to the other students in your school. The teachers treat you different, the bus drivers, and the school nurse. If you were good, then students, teachers, parents, and coaches from the other schools treated you superior as well. Parents of other players wish you were their kid. So, in a sense, we are superior not only because we've won, but we've kicked your ass along the way.

So you just compared yourself to someone who actually played on the team? Explain?

I disagree.

Fan bases are both smart and dumb...just like there are fat people and skinny people.

Stereotyping fan bases, just like stereotyping a race, may be funny but usually is untrue.

I generally find most of the fans posting (in the NBA section here) have a pretty good understanding of the game. Homerism gets in the way; but it's not due to a lack of knowledge.

It's unlikely that non Spurfans posting on a Spurs board would be just "casual" team followers.

Partially true. There are some smart and dumb fans for every team, but there is certainly a pecking order. Some of the ratio's are wayyyy off. Laker fans should be smarter, but I would say 1 out of every 19 is smart. They are a seriously dumb fan base...with regards to basketball.

This has nothing to do with "domination" as some mention. Just simple fact. Suns fan base is not very knowledgeable at all, but there are some good Suns fans here.

The irony in believing the NBA is rigged so Big Market teams win.

try again. Every small market typical fan thinks this

cobbler

Partially true. There are some smart and dumb fans for every team, but there is certainly a pecking order. Some of the ratio's are wayyyy off. Laker fans should be smarter, but I would say 1 out of every 19 is smart. They are a seriously dumb fan base...with regards to basketball.

This has nothing to do with "domination" as some mention. Just simple fact. Suns fan base is not very knowledgeable at all, but there are some good Suns fans here.

There is not any more knowledgeable than the other, pffffft. That is like giving all the little kids a trophy, even when there are teams that dominate and others that should transition into music/theater.

Show me how you qualify this simple fact. Show me your qualitative data that in any way shape or form proves your 1 out of 19 comment.

try again. Every small market typical fan thinks this

Then they all share in the same stupidity when the absolute proof to the contrary is in the form of the Spurs, one of the smallest markets owning almost half the rings in the last 10 years.

Of course, for a lunatic who is in love crazily or ties with Kobe can think as he won many times NBA Championships.

As a fan, does it piss you off/make you feel like shit when the team you root for loses? It should. If it does, that means your identity has become part of theirs. If such is the case, I have no problem allowing the true fans to identify with the success to the same extent they identify with the failures.

Maybe not everyone claiming a stake in the Title has such an extent of fandom. It's for them to know they are fake... hollow... that the claim they stake is an empty claim. They will never know that feeling of going from the depths of despair to the absolute heights of ecstasy, and that fan will forever covet that level of joy, despite his claims.

This is a hard issue, i'd say both of you guys won. Without fans for championship teams, the NBA probably won't be as popular as it is today. But a person shouldn't be judge posting wise just because they haven't won championships. As a Cowboy fan, I was a fan in 2000, I didn't watch football before that because I didn't know much about it. Just because the Cowboys didn't get a win in the playoffs doesn't make me have lesser knowledge of what it's like to go to the playoffs. And me using the 5 rings argument would look stupid because I wasn't a fan or even born when they won some of those championships. (btw, Houston Texans and forty-winers still suck balls and cowboys>houston+SF bitches)

xellos88330
10-18-2009, 01:38 AM
Interesting thread.

I for one don't really care about who won how many championships and do not care if someone has more basketball knowledge than I do. It doesn't matter. The only thing that DOES matter is that I love watching my team and noone can tell me to do otherwise.
