Jon Jones: 'I Don't Want to Fight Lyoto Machida'



Aug 18, 2012 - If Jon Jones gets by Dan Henderson at UFC 151, he won't be salivating at the opportunity to fight Lyoto Machida again.

Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion, told ESPN.com on Friday that he has no interest in fighting Machida a second time, despite UFC president Dana White announcing following UFC on FOX 4 that Machida was the No. 1 light heavyweight contender.

"I don't want to fight Lyoto Machida," Jones said. "He was my lowest pay-per-view draw of last year.

"No one wants to see me fight Lyoto Machida. I don't want to fight Lyoto again. Lyoto is high risk and low reward.

"He's a tough fighter, but no one wants to buy that fight.

"Between (Mauricio) Shogun (Rua), (Quinton) Rampage (Jackson) and Rashad (Evans), Lyoto was my lowest draw. Why would I want to fight someone where it's a lose-lose situation? I won't make money on it. And he's a tricky fighter."

Jones defeated Machida via standing guillotine choke at UFC 140 in December. His next title defense will be on Sept. 1 against Henderson, and he pointed out in the same article that he isn't looking past "Hendo."

Machida has only won once since losing to Jones last year. He knocked out Ryan Bader earlier this month in Los Angeles.

Silva seems to be going after what he thinks is going to be easy money in GSP instead. There will be tons of pressure on GSP to say yes to the fight if he beats Condit because Silva has been calling him out for months.. MONTREAL -- With Cris Cyborg's steroid suspension set to expire in December, and the UFC set to bring women's MMA into its octagon shortly thereafter, these should be happy days for Cyborg. But instead, she's faced with a major decision about her career based upon Dana's White empathic proclamation on her place in the UFC.

The thing is, she might not have one.

White made it clear on Saturday night that he is only bringing in one weight division to the UFC: the 135-pound division. And with Cyborg's continued insistence that she cannot cut below 145, well, that could leave her with no place to go.

White confirmed that there would be no place in the UFC for Cyborg unless she hits 135.

"Right," he said when asked if that was indeed the case. "I'm bringing in the 135-pound division. That's what I'm doing."

Ronda Rousey has already been named the division's champion, with her Strikeforce belt being traded in for a shiny new UFC belt. Cyborg was the Strikeforce 145-pound champ but was stripped of the gold after testing positive for stanozolol following her Dec. 17, 2011 match with Hiroko Yamanaka.

That division holds little interest for White and his matchmakers, who see most of the women's talent at 135 and below. And because of it, he warned Cyborg that she'd have to come down to Rousey's weight class or be out of a job.

"I haven’t [talked to her] but our matchmakers have talked to her camp and she doesn’t seem too excited to fight Ronda," he said. "We’re bringing in the 135-pound division, that’s what we’re doing. I’m trying this women’s thing out. Ronda’s the champ. I think that Ronda has the potential to be a big star. She’s already getting media we’ve never even gotten before and she’s never even set foot in the UFC. That’s the division we’re bringing in, the 135-pound division, so I don’t know. We’ll see."

Georges St-Pierre: Anderson Silva fight will happen on my terms, not his

The Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva super fight isn't a done deal just yet, and if GSP gets his way, it may not happen for a while.

In his first major interview since his UFC 154 win over Carlos Condit last weekend, St-Pierre told Radio-Canada's "Tout Le Monde en Parle" ("Everyone is Talking") on Sunday night that the time just isn't right for him to fight Silva.

Below are his translated comments about the fight:

"This fight is the cherry on the sundae," he said. "He wants to fight me so he can then retire. I would like to fight him too, but after I fight him and win the fight, what happens next? These days, yeah, there's a lot of money to be made, but I don't fight for the money. My motivation is to be the best. Like we said, to be the Wayne Gretzky of my sport. So if I fight him, what happens next? It will be over. So yes, I want the fight, but I want to take it when I decide the time is right, not when he wants the fight to happen.

"On top of that, he weighs 234 pounds; I weigh 188. So there's a big weight difference. I've fought guys who were bigger -- I'm not scared of him -- it's just that I will take this fight when it makes sense for me. I just came back from an injury, there's money to be made, there are fights in my weight class, other challenges out there, and if I fight him, I will have to gain weight, while he will have to lose weight, and then afterwards, I won't be able to come back to my weight class.

"First and foremost, I have things to do at 170 pounds. When I am ready and when I want the fight, that's when it will happen."

Other notes from the show:

* GSP wore sunglasses throughout the entire interview because he said he had yet to fully heal from the Condit fight.

* GSP said he had Christmas dinner last year at Sylvester Stallone's house after his doctor wouldn't clear him to fly home from Los Angeles following knee surgery.

* Arnold Schwarzenegger called to congratulate him after last weekend's win.

* He thinks he could fight until he's 45 years old, but he guarantees he will be retired by then.

* The host said GSP makes approximately $15 million a year in addition to his UFC fight purses. GSP did not disagree.

* He said he's not quite the Gretzky of MMA but maybe the Joe Sakic.

So i guess Dana has not talked to GSP or Silva yet about this since both sides are laying out their terms.. Some of these GSP quotes make no sense. You don't have to retire after the Silva fight you just keep going at WW.. The Jones fight would be awesome but Silva does not want that at 205.. What a mess..

SI.com has confirmed through multiple sources that UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture has signed into a multi-year deal with Spike TV, a property of Viacom, to appear in multiple projects for the cable channel, as well as other possible ventures within the media conglomerate's family of networks.

As a part of the multi-faceted agreement, Couture's first role will be as a coach in the forthcoming Bellator MMA reality Series, which begins shooting in February and airs later this year.

Spike TV will unveil this industry-shifting announcement on Feb. 5 during a press conference in Los Angeles, where Couture and Spike TV president Kevin Kay will discuss details of the agreement and what the 49-year-old retired fighter's role will be on the Bellator series and possibly other Spike-broadcasted projects. The series is expected to feature a number of current and up-and-coming Bellator fighters.

Sources told SI.com that the deal with Spike and Viacom was executed in late December, much to the disapproval of Couture's former employer, UFC president Dana White. Since his retirement in April 2011 at age 47, Couture has turned his attention to Hollywood with supporting roles in The Expendables and its summer 2012 sequel, and had most recently served as an on-camera analyst for the UFC's live events on Fox. However, Couture was absent from the UFC on Fox 6 broadcast on Jan. 26, replaced by one-time teammate Chael Sonnen.

Bellator MMA (formerly Fighting Championships), a tournament-format live event series that airs Thursdays (10 p.m. ET) on Spike, debuted on the men's specialty channel on Jan. 17, garnering 938,000 average viewership during its two-hour-plus broadcast. Viacom purchased a majority share of Bellator in October 2011 to replace the programming void left after UFC owners Zuffa LLC moved its sports property to the Fox Sports Media Group in a seven-year deal reportedly worth around $630 million.

Couture (19-11) is no stranger to Spike's loyal male-driven audience. In January 2005, he and Chuck Liddell starred as coaches on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, the reality series largely credited with launching the UFC and MMA's explosive rise in popularity over the last seven years. Couture also appeared on subsequent seasons of the series, which now airs on FX. In 2007, Spike also dedicated a night of primetime viewing to Couture's storied UFC career, which saw him become the first athlete to hold titles in multiple UFC divisions.

The as-yet unnamed Bellator series is being helmed by seven-time Emmy Award-winning producer Bertram Van Munster (The Amazing Race, Cops).

Representatives for Couture and Spike TV declined to make comment until the Feb. 5 announcement.

Last week at Bellator 90, Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal got knocked out by an Emanuel Newton spinning backfist that shocked everyone. Well everyone who hadn't already noticed Mo's habit of keeping his hands down at his waist.

Mo talked to Fight Hype in the aftermath and here's what he had to say:

"I have been here before and I bounced back from it, and I will do the same this time. I am going to work more on my defense with Jeff Mayweather and I'm going to go back to my roots and work with Kevin Jackson, and I think I will be just fine. Emanuel did what he had to do and he caught me," Lawal commented.

As far as the spinning backfist that put him out, Lawal said it was a shot he never even saw. "I didn't even see the shot. A lot of people saying that I was fighting cocky and with my hands down, but if you watch it, when he missed with his right hand, I threw a right hand and then he came with the spinning backfist," he explained. "So he kind of caught me in the act of punching, but no excuses, I'm good, and I will be back and hopefully I get to fight him again in the future. It was the first time I had been knocked out, and the good thing is I came to pretty quick. When I saw the ref standing over me, I just said, 'Damn!'"

Meh boxing is not really more money unless you have a great promoter behind you that can get you big fights. Boxing history is littered with champions ignoring and dodging dangerous foes for easy paydays and making lame excuses.. Going all the way back to the days of Jim Jeffries refusing to give Jack Johnson a title shot because of his color.. Hagler was making like 50 grand a fight for years until he finally got his due and a title shot..

How good is Jon Jones?

As I said, I only just started watching UFC earlier this year, and his record is amazing. Only 1 loss, and from what I read, it seems like that one shouldn't have even counted. The current drug suspension doesn't seem that bad either - it doesn't seem like blatant juicing (Do you guys think he was juicing blatantly, whether it be then or before then?). Anyway, I'm just curious on why I haven't heard him mentioned as one of the all time greats along with guys like GSP, Anderson Silva, Demetrious Johnson. I know there is a lot of other great fighters, but I'm just referring to current guys that are still competing in the UFC. How come with the record he has, that he's not mentioned with any of those guys above?

How do you know your division is pure shit? When 48 year old Glover Texaco is your bloody champion.

I’ve been out of the loop/game for a few years due to some crazy life experiences, but now that things have calmed down and I can relax a bit, I come back only to find a bunch of fools I’ve never heard of in the top 10, and a bunch of old dogs that should be retired holding gold belts. Glover? Olivera? Really?
