View Full Version : Why LeBron James is better than Kobe Bryant
MiamiHeat
12-21-2009, 06:46 PM
There has never been a player this good at this age.
LeBron is best, most complete player to ever play in the NBA right out of high school. He is light years ahead of Kobe Bryant at every age since 18.
When Kobe was sitting on the bench for his first couple of NBA seasons, LeBron was averaging 20+ PPG, 5 asst, 6 rebs right out of the gate.
-----------------------
Statistics prove LeBron is head and shoulders above Bryant (http://nba.suite101.com/article.cfm/lebron_james_is_better_than_kobe_bryant)
Key Offensive Stats
There are many categories to compare, but the top three offensive statistics offer the best starting ground. Kobe Bryant averages 25.1 points per game, 5.3 assists per game, while shooting 45 percent from the field. The Cavs LeBron James averages 27.5 points per game, 6.6 assists per game and shoots 47 percent. The most obvious assessment here is that LeBron is better in every key offensive category. Interestingly, Kobe is known as a much better outside shooter, yet he is only a fraction better from 3-point range than LeBron (34 percent to 32 percent).
Defensive Comparison
A couple of years ago, most people would say Kobe Bryant was much better than LeBron James defensively, likely due to Bryant's on-ball pressure. With LeBron exerting himself, though, this opinion has changed in NBA circles. Plus, LeBron has always had better statistics defensively than Kobe Bryant. LeBron outrebounds Bryant, outsteals him and blocks more shots.
So, any argument that Kobe Bryant is a better defender than LeBron James is really no longer a valid argument.
Single Game Performances
The only category that Kobe Bryant owns is single-game scoring outbursts. He has numerous 60-point games and one 81-point eruption. LeBron James, though, has always been more interested in the all-around game, as evidenced by LeBron's 20 triple-doubles, compared to only 16 for Kobe, who has played hundreds more games than James.
Plus, anyone who saw LeBron James against Detroit in a close-out game in the 2007 playoffs would see what a gamer he can be, when he wants to take over. King James scored 24 straight points in the fourth quarter that night, including some unseemly 3-pointers with defenders draped all over him. James also hit the game-winning shot.
Summarizing the James versus Bryant Debate
There are times when intangibles make a difference when comparing athletes. This is not one of those times. There is certainly nothing intangible that Kobe Bryant can do better than LeBron James; both are supreme athletes who can run and jump with the best players in the NBA. Both have the proverbial killer instinct that great players have.
So, the numbers have to settle the debate. In this case, they certainly do. LeBron James is simply better than Kobe Bryant.
------------------------------
Top 5 reasons why LeBron is the best player in the NBA, better than Bryant (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1823001/top_5_reasons_lebron_james_is_better.html)
Reason #1
Kobe's 40, 8 and 8 were good enough to beat Orlando, but LeBron's 49, 6 and 8, nor his 44, 12 and 7 performance were good enough to beat Orlando. That tells me one thing: Kobe's team is way better than LeBron's. If Kobe can have a night like that and blow out the Magic by 25, then why wouldn't a similar night result in at least a win for LeBron? It just goes to show you what type of talent the two have playing around them. That's why LeBron's accomplishments with this team are amazing, and it is also why the "Kobe made the Finals" argument doesn't win the debate for Mr. Bryant.
Reason #2
LeBron is the better passer and rebounder. Say what you will about Kobe's ability to score, but LeBron is better at just about every phase of the game, especially passing and rebounding. LeBron's assists numbers destroy Kobe Bryant. Even when Kobe Bryant was
more of a facilitator and had Shaq-Daddy to throw lob passes to, he only averaged 5, or at best 6, assists per game. Compare that to LeBron's 7.5 and it's a not contest, especially when you consider the no-names he is pass the ball to. As for the rebounding, it's not even close. Forget the actual boards, LeBron grabs 11.9% of all boards available, and 19% of all defensive boards. That's an amazing stat for a guy who plays out on the perimeter as much as he does.
Reason #3
LeBron is in his prime. Listen, there was a time when Kobe Bryant was a better player than LeBron James, but that time has passed. Not to say that Kobe is losing it already, but he's not the high-flying, super crossover, defending Allen Iverson type of player he once was. LeBron on the other hand is still doing all of those things, and he is doing them at a high level. I mean can you really imagine Kobe doing all of the acrobatic, dunk contest type of stuff he use to do? You can't, and neither can I. Which is why, at the very least, Kobe backers have to admit that LeBron has passed Kobe as an athlete.
Reason #4
LeBron is playing defense. Just last year, the big issue everyone had with LeBron is that he wasn't a defender. ESPN analyst after ESPN analyst would point to the fact that Kobe gets it done on both ends of the floor and that's why they considered him a better player than LeBron. But those days are over. LeBron is a defensive stand-out. I'm not saying he's the best defender ever now, but those AP guys did vote him to the first-team All Defense this year, meaning that they considered him among the top 5 defenders in the league. Yes, Kobe was right there alongside of him, but no longer can anyone say that Kobe's defense is what separates him from LeBron, because right now there is little separation in that department, if any.
Reason #5
LeBron James is more clutch than Kobe Bryant. Can we really stop with the nonsense that Kobe is the guy you would rather have in the last 5 minutes of a game? Have you seen what LeBron did against the Magic? He was as clutch as ever. It's not his fault his team wasn't up to the task!

"But even though it's hard for me to be objective, because I brought Kobe to Los Angeles, I do think LeBron has surpassed Kobe as a player."
"I look at Cleveland say to myself, 'How many games could they win without LeBron James?' West told Reuters in an interview. "That's how great he is.
"He has a chance to be arguably the greatest player ever to play the game."
West, the NBA's executive of the year with the Lakers in 1995 and the Memphis Grizzlies in 2004, said playing both ends of the floor was what made Jordan so great.
"Michael Jordan was the best defensive player in the league but he was also the best offensive player," said West. "It wasn't a one-year fluke, he proved it over time.
"LeBron James will do the same type of things because he's getting better. He's a much more effective shooter. When's he's making his shots from the outside, you can't play him.
"He's just too big, too strong, too quick. And he has incredible body control. But more than that, he's a great team mate. You can see his team mates love him." - Jerry West - May 2009

First off, who's the best supporting player that LeBron has ever had? A guy name Mo Williams, who can shoot when he's open and score a few buckets. He now has a washed up Shaq past his prime, but even that may be enough to win a title.
Who has Kobe had?
Shaq, in his prime. He now has Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, the best front court in the league. He also has Lamar Odom, and many veterans such as Derek Fisher.

Because your computer froze and you logged on as your other account by mistake.
It would have made more sense had you allowed ChrisRichards to continue to pretend that he was in fact trying to troll you. However, instead you went another route and had ChrisRichards deny what he said as well and edit his post after the fact. Good thing I quoted it. I don't think you quite get it. Sure, Kobe had Shaq and Lebron hasn't had anyone. But the fact is, supporting cast and non supporting cast, one guy has won, and one hasn't...that's all that matters. You can't say a guy is better than another guy because he hasn't had the same teammates. That just doesn't work. Kobe makes other players better. He made Derek Fisher a good shooter by taking all the pressure away. Once Lebron figures out how to make his teammates better, he'll be on Kobe's level, but who knows when that'll happen.

LeBron is the better passer and rebounder. Say what you will about Kobe's ability to score, but LeBron is better at just about every phase of the game, especially passing and rebounding. LeBron's assists numbers destroy Kobe Bryant. Even when Kobe Bryant was

Kobe is a great great player, one of the best offensive weapons in the NBA while he played, and a very good defender (for 30 seconds at a time, no more than 3 times a game).
However, Kobe has shown a kryptonite-like weakness to his game: Phil Jackson. Kobe is ineffective as a player when Phil doesn't coach. Not that he can't score, or can't win regular season games, most of the time, but he can't put things 'together' without him, at least not yet.
LeBron has had his own issues with coaches (Snow getting rid of Sials? Yeah right...), But he has at least been able to cary his team into the playoffs and advance fairly far. Now his Finals run was a bit fraudulent (a paper thin injured Wiz, mentally unstable Pistons, etc.) but he was fighting his coach the whole way, as he does to this day.
That is pretty amazing.

NBA Commissioner David Stern will be on The $ports Take with Rick Horrow (on Versus) on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Stern was asked about LeBron James, and this is some of what he had to say:
He may be the best player ever to have played. Michael might dispute that, but he has a lot of canvas yet on which to paint. I have no doubt the picture is going to be beautiful.
You know, he hasn’t won anything yet but he may be the best player ever to descend to this planet. It’s a delight to watch him; it’s a delight to watch him grow, to see his width and breadth, in terms of his interest and capacities. He’s a great kid and a great player.

If 18-year old Kobe Bryant walked into the exact same thing as 18-year old LeBron James walked into: a Cavaliers team that had lost 50-plus games four seasons in a row and had finished with the worst record in the NBA the year before...
Instead of the best and most prestigious organization in the sport, and one that was all loaded up for another big run with the league's most dominant big man...
Do you think Kobe would have gotten the Cavaliers as far as LeBron has gotten them?

What I know is Lebron still wouldn't have a post-game if he was on the Lakers.
Doesn't matter what the team they are on. Kobe is the superior basketball player. Lebron may be more physicall and athletically dominant. But basketball skill? Kobe and it isn't even close.
Imagine Kobe posting the league up like he has been in a 6'8 275 frame.

Interestingly, Kobe is known as a much better outside shooter, yet he is only a fraction better from 3-point range than LeBron (34 percent to 32 percent).Easier to get more assists when the entire offense is LeIso. And LeBron didn't get drafted by a Team with an All-Star playing his position. And he was drafted in a time when players out of HS were given more of a chance
LeBron outrebounds Bryant, outsteals him and blocks more shots.Blocks and Steals can be indicative of poor defense as well...And LeBron is not close to Kobe on ball defensively
James also hit the game-winning shot.Kobe does that, he gets whipped for "BallHogging"
Both have the proverbial killer instinct that great players have.I'd like to see some of LeBron's killer instinct...LeBron has won ONE playoff series against a 50+ win team. Kobe, WAY more.
I don't remember LeBron locking up Allen Iverson or any Star Scorer...ever.
LeBron also was voted 2nd in DPOY, but does anyone seriously believe he deserved second over Shane Battier, Ron Artest, KG (Before Injury), or Tim Duncan?
Can you really call LBJ more clutch than Kobe after the Miami game and the Bucks game? And there is a reason LeBron's teammates are just spot up shooter waiting for a pass. It's because LeIso's style of play forces that role on them.
Jerry West says LeBron is the best player today (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE54H5PF20090518)
------------------------
"But even though it's hard for me to be objective, because I brought Kobe to Los Angeles, I do think LeBron has surpassed Kobe as a player."
" - Jerry West - May 2009

Get real. Horry was a role player not one of the top two players on a championship team.
Comparisons are for great players only:
Kobe Shaq
Jordan Pippen
Magic Kareem
Bird McHale
etc.
Bottom line is Lebron's career will never favorably match up with Kobe's until he wins multiple rings. It's no different than KG and Tim. When KG wins multiple rings then people can start comparing him to Tim. Same thing with Lebron and Kobe.

Is it Kobe's fault that the Lakers went out and got all those pieces? Or are we giving Cavs management a pass and give LeBron a pat on the back because they've given him less talent to work with?

Kobe is more skilled than Lebron, but I still think Lebron has a greater impact on basketball games. It's all about perception really... after the Cheat were gifted a title by the refs a poll on ESPN if I recall correctly had D-Whistle leading as the best player in the NBA... and Kobe/Lebron were on mediocre teams at the time.
Now Kobe is coming off of a championship, and the Lakers still look like the best team in the NBA... I don't think the Kobe v Lebron debate is that legitimate, Lebron to me clearly has a greater impact on basketball games, the only reason it is such a debate is because of Kobe having a great team around him at this point in time.
If you give D-Whistle Kobe's supporting cast we're probably having a D-Whistle v Lebron debate with Kobe considered the 3rd best player in the league... everyones perceptions are skewed by how good a players' team is at a given point.

Wrong. Kobe has hit the most gamewinners in the NBA with 3 seconds or less since 2005 ...
Lebron makes great blocks and HAS IMPROVED on defense but he is not a shutdown defender ....When focused Kobe still is ...
And I am NOT saying ...that EVERYONE who thinks Lebron is better is a Kobe hater that was just talking crap ...
Im just saying that if you watch the game with no bias, or have played the game at a high level you can SEE with your own EYES that Kobe's skill level is on a much higher plane than Lebron. Lebron is now (and always was) the better athlete and I think he may even have that edge on MJ. But where he lacks:
1. Clutch shot making Lebron has gotten better no doubt about it and his willingness to pass makes him especially dangerous IF his guys are hot.
But every GM or player poll shows that Kobe would be chosen to take that shot STILL ...until this changes Kobe is more clutch
2.Lebron's foot work (except where it matters MOST on the dancefloor LOL) is suspect on defense and in the post ...watch Lebron on a regular basis his inside game is all speed and power and his blocks are hops ...his foot work sucks (well needs work) that is why he travels so much ...
3. HIS FT shooting still is suspect ...i know I chose him first in my FANTASY draft ..over Kobe, Wade and CP3 and he kills me ...a player of his baliber should be 85% and above as much as he gets fouled at that rate he would probaly outscore Melo and Kobe ...easily ...
The things Lebron does Exceptional now drive, pass, dunk and come from behind blocks ...dont make up for Kobe's superior post game, foot work, shot making mid-range game use of his left ...
If im making a tape of b-ball between the two defense (JVG pointed this out vs. Miami) I use kobe, jumpshot: Kobe, post game: Kobe FT? Kobe Only thing I use for Lebron? Dunking and Passing that is it ...
Anyone that would argue otherwise don't know ball ...

Kobe has taken the most, and missed the most, clutch shots since 2005
LeBron is much higher efficiency in clutch time than Kobe does.
Fact
Kobe being the best closer is a myth
