View Full Version : Mason Wants Out?

I just put this in the speculation thread but will crosspost it here:
Ford had this in his chat today about OKC (http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/30864):
Take Nick Collison off their hands for an expiring contract and get one of their first round picks.
Mason + Bonner for Nick Collison + 1st.
Mason & Bonner are both out of town then plus a first. Plus Collison is just the kind of stiff that would be a mistake that Pop, the FO, and a lot of Spurs fans are in love with, plus his contract only runs one more year. Plus this deal gets the Spurs slightly cheaper luxury tax obligations.

I don't know about losing RMJ. He seems to have shot us out of alot of jams and would leave us lacking at the 3 point line.

Not to be a cynic, but the Spurs may actually want to keep their 1st Rounders this year. We'll mostly likely be picking higher this year than in recent years.

That trade suggests a first rounder coming to the Spurs from OKC as the price for taking on Collison's contract and freeing up cap space for the Thunder.

true.
That would free up RC to burn a first on whichever terribly undersized 25 year old 2-guard that RC swears is the best shooter in America and worthy of drafting even higher!

Put another way, (If this could happen)
If the Ty Thomas trade would take giving up a pick, and this trade would get a pick, effectively
Ty Thomas(EC and the better player, Would be possible to resign) or Collison(1 year left) + 2 picks(20, 22).
What do you do?

sorry man, it's just funny. Not so much that RC is declaring they would have taken McClinton if Blair wasn't there, but the whole "He's the best shooter in the draft" stuff when Stephen Curry is in the very same draft. That was giggle time.

Just for speculation purposes, if Mason is traded, would the Spurs want a similar player in return, or would the Spurs let Hairston get a shot at filling Mason's role, along with Hill, Finley, etc...?

I think this thread is about Mason...
Mason never struck me as an unintelligent player, in fact he seems like a very smart guy.
When he arrived...everyone here loved him...tried to find him a nickname, praised his character,etc...
I always thought he was ---Spur material---
this latest development got me to thinking....
what IS going on behind closed doors...what happened with Bowen last season?...
what exactly is going on with team chemistry...
where DOES pop stand with his team---as far as RESPECT?
are the players losing faith?...
if I worked my ass off and Finley started over me to start the season...how would I feel?
Maybe Mason saw the writing on the wall and decided---what's the point? Pop is in control of this ship and pop would rather have the whole ship sink than actually give up control.
Maybe Pop would rather see the whole franchise go down the drain before admitting that maybe HE is the problem.
I once thought Pop was the BEST coach in the league...but he has really sucked this season---and last season.
Maybe Mason knows firsthand just how bad things have become.
thank you!

Realistically speaking, 20 minutes a night is great for a 30 year old slow, unathletic player who can't defend and who is supposed to be a shooter when he's actually shooting 43%.
I'm not sure what more Roger wants but I think this is his first step out of the NBA.

Agreed, hes a average to below average playmaker, can sometimes create his own shot and although he plays hard on D, he just isnt very good. But if he believes in himself and believes that he'll get a better opportunity somewhere else then so be it.. i just hope we get something of value back for him.

If this is true then I honestly have to laugh. Exactly how much minutes does Roger expect to get when he doesn't play any defense?

Come on guys. Mason didn't ask to be traded. He knew he would be trade bait and saw the writing on the wall. I think he just tried to preempt it. I mean only a few days ago he stated he wanted to stay in SA for his career and try to win a Championship.
Anyone who thinks Mason orchestrated all these trade talks on his own is delusional.

POSTED: Feb. 17 -- 4:39 p.m. ET
http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/nba/med/mia.gif
Marc Stein: The Miami Heat (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=mia) have indeed expressed interest in San Antonio's Roger Mason (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1721), but the Miami deal that interested the Spurs most is no longer possible.
The Spurs were hoping to tempt Miami into absorbing Mason's $3.8 million expiring contract into a $4.3 million trade exception that would have enabled the teams to complete a deal without San Antonio needing to take back another player. A future second-round pick from the Heat would have completed the transaction.
But the Heat, dealing with their own luxury-tax issues like San Antonio and reluctant to add to their payroll, ultimately declined.
And the trade exception in question -- created through the departure of Marcus Banks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2165) in Miami's Shawn Marion (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=510) trade with Toronto on Feb. 15, 2009 -- expired Monday at midnight.
The Spurs and Mason's agent, Mark Bartelstein, have mutually agreed to pursue trades before Thursday's 3 p.m. trading deadline, but it'll take a new trade construction to get Mason to Miami now if the Heat want to try again.
San Antonio is more than $10 million over the luxury-tax threshold, so the deal proposed Monday to Miami would have cut their tax bill by nearly 40 percent. Miami is roughly $2.8 million over the tax threshold.

Well, he shouldn't be. Besides his contract could be used to bring another useful player (for ex. T. Thomas).
I think that this trade proposal (Mason for cap space) and the fact that the Spurs are shopping practically everybody makes me think that they're giving up on this season.

According to one source, the Sixers have inquired about San Antonio Spurs guard Roger Mason, as well as Golden State Warriors swingman Anthony Morrow. Neither player was available for the Sixers. In one case, the team wasn't willing to part with the player. In the other, the Sixers couldn't offer enough in return.

Interesting. My guess is that Morrow wasn't available and they couldn't give up enough for Mason. As much as the Spurs were willing to give away Mason for nothing, I think they'd rather keep him than get any old expiring contract.

When I first read this I assumed it was the Warriors who weren't willing to part with the player, but I'm hoping that it was the Spurs and that they are still trying to use Mason to work a trade that will help them (wishful thinking, I know, but maybe . . .).

The Memphis Grizzlies have about $3.2 million in cap room and are taking with several clubs seeking luxury tax relief. The main targets of the Grizzlies could be the Heat for Dorell Wright or the Jazz for Ronnie Brewer.
According to The Commercial-Appeal, "It is likely that the Grizzlies will pull off a trade at the 11th hour, according to sources with knowledge of the team's dealings. There is, however, confusion within the organization and an element of desperation coming from owner Michael Heisley. The Griz are seriously considering four or five scenarios, according to the sources."
As we noted yesterday, the Grizzlies have shown interest in Roger Mason.

Mason is a little sensitive perhaps, but he's worked hard, played out of position, tried to improve his game...and got stuck behind Finley and Bogans. He's in a contract year. This is his last "big" contract. A lockout is looming. The smart move is to get traded to where he has a better chance to play. Seems pretty logical. This team isn't doing shit this year and the Spurs clearly don't want him.
