His two break out seasons were in 07-08 with Washington and in 08-09 with the Spurs. Even though these were his two best seasons, his stats weren't spectacular.

This season, all of his averages have taken a nose dive. Yet, I don't think that it's all because of lack of playing time. Mason has played in 78 games and averaged 19 minutes a game.

This guy is good as gone.

Only team I think would be interested in signing him is Washington.

he won't get offers as good as what the Spurs gave him. but there will be quite a few teams willing to sign him for minimum to BAE money.

We missed the opportunity to trade him when his value is at the peak after hitting those winning shots.

Amazing how far he's fallen. I thought he'd be fine playing some PG after being serviceable in Washington when Arenas was out. Guess the system was just too difficult. No excuse for his defense though.

His often terrific play last season made him a great value, such that trading his modest contract wouldn't have gotten us an equal value in return. Nobody could have predicted he'd fall off a cliff as badly as he has this year.

Many people seem to believe we would lose a lot by getting rid of Mason. I disagree.

Here's some reasoning :

- With the addition of a healthy Manu Ginobili and prolific scorer in his own right Richard Jefferson, Mason's opportunities will be cut drastically.

Yes many fans have pointed out Mason's shooting will be missed. With Finley back it won't be missed as much as you may think. Yes Mason had a great one dribble pull up on his pick and roll opportunities early in the season, when the defense was lazy or went under the screen nonchalantly. Hate to burst your Mason bubble, but those screen and roll opportunities won't be there next year.

Mason won't be seeing anywhere close to the 30.4 mpg he got last year with RJ and Manu taking up 60 minutes that were available last year.

Not to mention Pop stating earlier in the off-season that Hill will get more time at the 2-spot. And don't forget Michael Finley either. Finley will get some run.

All this leads me to thinking, will Mason's shooting really be missed if his minutes were to be cut by 40 % ?? Something to think about.

I don't believe giving up Mason would be as detrimental to the Spurs as some may think, not only because of the PT and opportunity factor, but also by his liability on the defensive end ( one of the worst, if not the worst perimeter defender on the team last year.)

All in all, Spurs might think the best time to get anything significant for Bonner/ Mason is now. Given the fact that their opportunities will be decreased, and therefore their trade value may fall.

Yet that trade was never made, meaning the FO received no interest for the package, or the Spurs didn't think potential trade partners were offering enough value in return. Does this change my point?
