Brah, MK the games licked balls. Take away the blood and the fatalities and you have a shitty SF2 knockoff that really isn't very good.
sons maybe so, but the MK character roster easily shits upon any other fighting game ever, with a distant second going to Killer Instinct and then Tekken somewhere after that.

Seriously...it's a FUCKING game...get over it...I grew up with MK when I was in middle school...which...back then...was THE SHIT...there was nothing like it...blood...gore...the first MK sucked ass as far as game play...but the characters were new and interesting...MKII really took it up a notch...adding all those new combos...new costumes...the fact that they COULD wind up making this...AND making it Rated R...makes up for so much...I like how they're really trying to tie it back to the real world rather than just mythical creatures and powers...but more about assassins and killers...

i THINK Mortal Kombat was the first video game to use real blood, right? im not sure.
it was a big fucking deal back then, I remember my parents got me Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis and the Sega Game Gear back when it first came out.
Mortal Kombat was seen as the "cooler kids" game compared to Street Fighter 2. plus, MK was newer, since everyone had already played Street Fighter to death.
and that's one thing I think you younger kids missed out on...
before the explosion of home PC's and video game consoles....
you had to go to the Arcade at the mall or someplace to play these new games :) only AFTER it's arcade run, did you get a home console version on the SNES or Sega Genesis.....
people would crowd around the arcade machines and it was a matter of pride to be the best and get to keep your spot on the machine as you beat all challengers... i once beat 4 guys in a row when i was like 12 yrs old, all of them older than me, felt awesome having so many people watching :)
I do think Mortal Kombat got stupid once they added too many fatality types... like "Babality" and other garbage.... just became too gimmicky, i stopped playing them after MK3.
Street Fighter 2 and MK ruled the days :)
you guys remember the Mortal Kombat commercials?

It's an interesting take on the whole thing. Could have done with out the dumbass "Codename:..." garbage where it just sounded so painfully forced to work the character names in. Right around the time I'd start thinking that they had a cool idea on bringing some of these more supernatural characters into the real world they'd awkwardly spit out their name from the game. I'm pretty sure that anyone whose going to bother watching this trailer knows damn well who the characters are. Could have done more subtle things like say, "He doesn't just look like one, the guy's as cold blooded as a reptile," or maybe give Scorpion a scorpion tattoo they can pan onto. I realize the games were never about being subtle but that sort of hamfisted dialogue over shit like that is a problem in every video game movie.
And they should have killed Stryker instead of Cage. Makes more sense to have a cop undercover and you'd probably get a standing ovation in the theaters when he gets it.

Mortal Kombat is one of the worst fighting games ever produced. MKII was good, but it's still nowhere near many other fighting games. It appealed to teen kids with a thirst for blood, and gore was thought of as "cool" in a video game. It was a novelty, and little else.
Virtua Fighter 4/5 is still the best fighting game in history, IMO. It blows away MK.

Gimmicks or no, MK was a good game for its time. Any game from back then is outdated by definition. People did not play it back then for game play or even because it was a fighting game.
MK and its sequels were played because of the fatalities and the blood and gore. That's the reason everyone thought it was cool. It was always about the fatalities, so you're missing the point. That's why MKII came out with two fatalities, babalities, and friendship. That's why subsequent fighting games like Killer Instinct and Primal Rage had their own version of fatalities.
You may be right about what you say but its irrelevant to MK being a good game. Had you actively played or watched these games at an arcade at the time, you would know this.

Way to contradict yourself, but theres more
I used to play MK1, but I was a retarded child back then. The games rely on gimmicks and are behind the curve fighting game wise.
Just so I can own you further, which fighting games besides SFII as of 1992 made Mortal Kombat "sooo beyind the curve" in your "non young", "I played this game alot even at arcades" opinion?
Like I said. Any game from 1992 compared to the new crop two years later is outdated and gimmicky not only by opinion but by definition. And saying it's gimmicky now in the year 2010? You sound like you read a book on video games or something. Way to wow us with that one professor.
Even if you want to move further to 1994 MKII which was just as gimmicky I will agree. With these characters you could "juggle" your opponents with players like Scorpion, Reptile, and of course Katana. Everyone did this. It became what the game was. The gimmick was the game. So what did the next crop of fighting games have? Combos. Wow, what a coincidence. The gimmicks became part of the game.
This has nothing to do with nostalgia, just you not knowing at all what you're talking about.

The videogame that introduced Fatalities to the gaming masses is going back to its gory roots. Warner Bros. Interactive announced today a rebooted Mortal Kombat is in development by NetherRealm Studios.
Warners promises a "triumphant return" to the franchise's mature gameplay. To prove that point, the publisher said Fatalities are back and in more gory detail than ever before.
"We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play," said Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand's legendary characters and fighting style."
An all new graphics engine is being used to reinvent the classic 2D fighting mechanic, and franchise creator Ed Boon is on board as creative director.
"We can't wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat," Boon said. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever."
The game will also feature a new four-player tag team mode, online multiplayer, and a roster of fighters that includes Mortal Combat's iconic characters.
The game is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and is set to launch next year.

Exclusive Interview with MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH Director Kevin Tancharoen; Learn How Short Film Came Together and What He Wants to do in a Feature!
I love his comments about the matrix movies and the "too many character" issues with Spiderman 3 and Transformers 2(only 1 of many problems with that movie)
If yall listen to this you'll know his goal is to make a movie, not anything related to a video game. Sounds like it's going to happen too

It's not a movie, it was a TV show. Mortal Kombat: Conquest (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0170982/)
You can find them here. (http://www.letmewatchthis.com/watch-10580-Mortal-Kombat-Conquest) Episodes 2 and 21 seem to be missing though.
On another note, I can't find Tekken to download anywhere. Torrents get to 10% and then the DL speed drops to almost zero. Damn it.
So...finally was able to "find" the Tekken movie online...wasn't too bad...better than most video game movies...they did a decent job with most of the characters...Jin...Heihachi...the chick assassins...Raven looked spot on...Brian Fury looked spot on...they changed up Kazuya a bit...but it still worked...still felt like a B movie...

Just finished watching. Yeah it was ok. I liked MK better though.

It was cool to see some of the characters and what their take was...too bad this didn't have a big budget...seemed like it had potential...I can only cross my fingers for the MK rebirth to me made...
