ATM has received an invitation to the SEC. I've looked everywhere on the validity of this story but cant find anything. Anyone know anything about this?
Intersting.
Would be even more intersting if they were to accept, becuase I think UT has no interest in going to the SEC, which means that the Big 10 might once again be in play if A&M accepted.
I wonder how valid that story is though, interesting nonetheless.

Got this from twitter:
Mayorofsports: Word from Austin. Ags to SEC was done yesterday but Gov. Perry shot it down. Didnt want split with UT. Many Ags infuriated.
MayorOfSports: Legendary Gene Stallings in another stare down with Gov. Perry over Ags to SEC.
MayorOfSports: Colorado to Pac Ten. Well played, Buffs. Baylor would replace Ags in Pac if they go to SEC.

Just saw on ESPN they confirmed that A&M got an invite from the SEC. They then flipped over to a guy in Austin who said that A&M and UT officials are meeting in Austin making sure that they're both on the same page. They seem fairly certain that both teams are going to the new "Pac-16" along with the other good Big12 teams.

Now KC TV station reporting that UT & ATM to BIG 10..
Twitter:
MayorOfSports: TV station in KC says UT and A&M to Big 10. I don't believe it. Meanwhile, TT and Baylor have been allowed into meeting.
Who the hell knows what will happen. It would be nice if A&M goes to the SEC conference and UT to the BIG 10 conference and TECH to the PAC 10 (as of now) conference so we can possibily have a Texas Shootout in the national title game in the future. It could happen if all of the Texas teams stop holding hands and go their own way.

The Big Ten makes even less sense geographically than the Pac-10.
As for Perry, what can he really do directly about where A&M wants to go? He may have a great deal of indirect influence (appointing regents), but can he really stop us from going?

Pacific-10 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott, University of Colorado President Bruce D. Benson, and University of Colorado–Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano held a conference call this afternoon to discuss the news that Colorado will be joining the Pac-10 in 2012.
Scott would not address specific scenarios that may see the Pac-10 continue to expand in the coming weeks.
Below are some of the comments Scott made during the 30-minute conference call.
This is a very exciting day for the Pac-10 Conference. We are just thrilled to be welcoming the University of Colorado. The Pac-10 has a very bright future [ahead of it].
We’ve been looking at Colorado for quite some time. It was clear to us that for any scenario, Colorado is a great fit... Under any circumstances we are thrilled to have Colorado be part of our conference.
Reaction to a report that Oklahoma State has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10:
That would be news to me. No, that is not accurate.
On whether the Pac-10 will look to add more teams:
There are no assurances [that the Pac-10 will continue to expand past eleven teams]. No invitations have been issued.
On future expansion plans for Pac-10:
We are evaluating different options and waiting to see what might develop nationally before we decide what we might do next.
When the Pac-10 invited Colorado to join:
The first formal contact was on Tuesday after the [University of Colorado] Board of Regents met. That’s when an invitation was extended.
When the next move will be made by the Pac-10:
I can’t predict what kind of timing we might see here... Sometimes I’m having trouble predicting what is going to happen tomorrow.
The presidents and chancellors really have a bold vision for what they think the Pac-10 can be... The vision ultimately for being proactive, being innovative... stems from the vision of our presidents and chancellors.

The Big Ten makes even less sense geographically than the Pac-10.
Go figure.
Dallas to Seattle is farther away then Dallas to State College, PA as a general point in Texas.
Most the Pac-10 is 2 time zones away. Have fun with those 10:30 p.m. kickoffs. 5 Big teams as of now and soon to be 6 with Nebraska are in the same time zone as A&M and UT.
I'm not seeing how it makes less sense geographically than the Pac-10, could you at least provide some points for discussion other than a general statement.

In the Pac-10, there would be two divisions of eight teams. In our division, we would have most of the same teams we had in the Big 12 south. We'd have a couple of games against the 'Pacific' division a year, but for the most part we'd be close to the people we'd play against in our division.
In the Big Ten there are already 11 teams (12 now with Nebraska). Assuming they add Texas and A&M, there are only two more teams to add to reach 16. Even in the best-case scenario if they added Oklahoma and Ok. State, half of the teams in our division (the teams we'd play most often) would be 700 miles or more away. http://statsheet.com/cfb/conferences/big-ten/map

which is what....a 4 hour flight?
Pac 10 makes for the worst travel schedule, imo.....especially for A&M

Ok, I was bored and did a little research. I assumed either going to the Big Ten or going to the Pac-10, Texas and A&M would bring Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (not guaranteed for the Big Ten, it could end up being Missouri, Kansas, or some other more distant schools, which would make it even worse for the Big Ten distances). The real travel difference in the two would be the other 4 teams in the division.
Pac-10
Austin to Lubbock: 326 miles
Austin to Tucson: 789 miles
Austin to Phoenix: 867 miles
Austin to Boulder: 789 miles
Pac-10 total: 2771 miles, an average of 693 miles for the 4 schools.
Big Ten
Austin to Iowa city: 853 miles
Austin to Lincoln: 724 miles
Austin to Champaign: 859 miles
Austin to Bloomington: 880 miles
Big Ten total: 3316 miles, an average of 829 miles for the 4 schools.
I worked out College Station, and it's not as bad a disparity (average of 756 miles for Pac-10 vs. 782 miles for the Big Ten). You could argue that the occasional greater distances you'd have to cover in the Pac-10 might negate the difference, but I don't know if the trips to the far north of the Pac-10 will be frequent enough to do that (once every other year).
Again, in the Big Ten there's also the chance that Oklahoma and Ok. State don't come with us, and our other 'close' division members could be even further. Also, whether I like it or not Texas seems to be the lead school on choosing the conference (unless A&M breaks off for the SEC), so they would be more likely to choose the Pac-10 based on geography (including the fact that there will probably be generally better weather in the Pac-10, which could affect game play as well as travel time), though of course there may be other issues that might be an advantage for the Big Ten.
I might come across as a dumbass here, but I would be thrilled if A&M went to the SEC. I'd be a maroon t-shirt fan in all honesty. At this point, I don't really care if Texas goes to the Big Ten or the Pac 10 - it'll be fun and new - and seeing the Ags try to establish relevance in a conference against LSU, Florida, and Alabama is oddly compelling.
I haven't been on orangebloods.com much lately but I assume it's more of the "fuck them" type of attitude toward the Ags. I applaud A&M for potentially seizing a chance to get out of the burnt orange shadow. UT has made everything so onesided lately for them.

honestly, if A&M has sucked for a decade in a slightly weaker Big XII conference, they will get crushed for another decade in the SEC.
I don't think it's quite as green pasture looking as Aggie fan think it is. Just ask Arky fan how things have gone in the last 20 years of football...

I mean I understand this but I don't think any Aggies are claiming that we would go into the SEC and be competing for SEC championships all of the sudden. What would happen is the recruiting aspect would get better for A&M which will definitely help and the past decade of mediocrity was a result of a terrible hire in Franchione. Also, other aspects factor into the decision like location of the schools, and how A&M fits in culturally and as a city. Football isn't the only sport also. A&M is very competitive at every sport and being the lone SEC team in Texas will just bring better athletes.
I would prefer Texas and A&M go to the SEC together but obviously Texas doesn't want apart of it for whatever reasons.

Tech is relevant because in the Pac-10 we can bring them along, but in the Big Ten, they already have 12 teams. Texas and A&M make 14, so at best we could have 2 'close' schools in our division, whereas in the Pac-10 we could have 3 'close' schools.

Maybe the Pac-10 blinks just to net Texas/Oklahoma, but there's an understood, albeit unwritten rule that no religiously affiliated school can be in the PAC-10. It's a reason BYU is not being considered, despite its obvious rivalry with Utah, a recruited school.
From what I understand, while maybe not a "religious" school, Baylor has strong Baptist ties that could eliminate it from Pac-10 consideration. But, with them wanting Texas so badly and a spot now likely available, perhaps they tell Cal to suck it up and accept it for the green it brings.

On related matters though, here is a tweet regarding the SEC and UT and ATM.
