Hi there !
I'm the webmaster of TonyParkerBlog.com (http://www.tonyparkerblog.com) , unofficial french TP's blog. I've been very surprised of one thing : on french basketball forums, lots of basketball fans can't stand TP. For several reasons, but that's not the subject here.
I'd like to make a study on the way / the reasons why TP is loved or hated and the differences between France and the US. I think it can be interesting...
So I posted topics on several french basketball forums and spursreport.com forums is one of the US forums I've selected.
Please tell me if you love, hate, do not have opinion on Tony and why.
I'm not only speaking about his game or his personnality, but about the whole Tony
(please scuse me for my poor english, I really suck : )
Thanks for your help.
ps : I have another question... do you know a huge general basketball forum. This one is about Spurs and should be full of Spurs fans... I'm looking for an US general basketball forums with lots of basketball fans, not only Spurs fans. If you have suggestions, please send me a PM ;)

Ask Eva about the love and IceColdBrewski about the hate.

There's no article about that subject. That's the reasons why I'm making a study ;)
It seems they think he's pretentious, selfish... especially after the defeat of national French team in European Championship 2 years ago. Some players didn't seem to be 100% in the game, and Tony criticized them in the media after the game.
There are lots of reasons, but that's not the subject here. I'd just like to have your opinion, coming from the US ;)

It may be also because journalists love TP too much that some french basketball fans hate TP ;)

Don't take this the wrong way but...
I would think a Tony Parker site would be more concerned with the positive aspects of fan support towards Tony.
I'm not really seeing where you're going with this whole love/hate thing unless it's some bent to make Americans more cynical than the French.
Can't you just celebrate his good performances and leave it at that?

C'est vrai! Une vue saine. (That's right. A sound viewpoint)
The same thing (la meme chose) can be seen here among fans of a particular team. The more attention a player from an opposing team receives, the more he is despised by the fans of other teams. We may intellectually accept the dominance of Shaq, but our gut instinct is to hate him - even though he is a graduate of a San Antonio high school. Even though we may accept the fact that he is a "native son," the fact that he doesn't play for the SA Spurs damns him in the eyes of Spurs fans.
So, although we San Antonians love TP (I, for one, absolutely adore everything about his game), it's only natural that many French citizens see him as no longer the hometown idol. If he were still playing in France, he'd be idolized, n'est pas?
Ici, en les Etats Unis - San Antonio - le sentiment: "En voila un qui fera son chemin!" (Here, in the United States - San Antonio - the sentiment is: "That kid will go far!"
By the way, doesn't Tony turn 23 today? Or is the 18th?
Merci pour le question! Bon chance! :elephant

Well imo, Tony deserves more respect for his game in SA and more respect for what he's doing in the NBA. People from SA enjoys his way of playing, follow his performances week after week. Lots of people from France doesn't know anything about bball and just stick with Tony cause is playing "good" in the NBA and because he's fashionable. A good "product" to sell in France. In Texas you see the player, in France we have, mostly, to deal with his "product" image.
So, as a player, people from US are more objective and like/hate him for his play on the court more than for his last gf or if he does look sexy...

I would not be suprised if the people that don't like Tony are also some of the Bush bashers...

I really know very little, if anything, about Tony Parker's personality, so I really cannot make a valid judgment of him. His image is fine enough to me. I did hear that he was "bashful" if not rude at Malik's restaurant grand opening in San Antonio by beelining to the back of the restaurant to avoid contact with fans, presumably. Meanwhile, Malik, David Robinson and other players had big smiles on their faces and mingled with the fans.
As long as Tony Parker continues to improve I have no problem with him. I would certainly say that Parker appears much less fan-friendly than, say, Manu Ginobili. But Manu is rare.

Manu's personality looks better to me too... I mean he seems more fan-friendly at least...
Tony's personality may be much more enjoyable in the locker room.
But Manu's a little bit older so may had something to do too...

If a person let's public opinion shape what and how they do... they are not very much of a special person. Tony is a good guy that enjoy's life. Hopefully he an anyone else won't care much what negative people say about him.

I like Parker a lot, he's a great PG for the Spurs.

Who cares? Manu has an accent as well, and neither of them grew up in the US. I don't think anyone dislikes them for their pronuciation and english speaking skills, I mean, they are professional basketball players. Being a pro athlete doesn't require talking at all.
I don't really know where people are getting this hate for TP, after all, he isn't the one being attacked by every opponent on purpose (k-mart,melo,jerome james, george karl, etc.).
(please scuse me for my poor english, I really suck : )
Your english is great!

Tony-
ON a personal level, most fans like Tony very much. He's a young guy, well spoken, and confident. He's even a pretty funny guy. Sometimes he can be a little too hip hop for people, but overall his personality meshes well with people in San Antonio.
On a professional level, it's Tony's extreme inconsistency that drives people crazy. When I say extreme I mean he can score 30 pts and be totally unstoppable in one game, and the very next game score 2 pts with 5 TOs. However, this year Tony has been way more consistent and when he has struggled in the playoffs, he has figured out a way to be productive for his team.
Overall, Tony is very good point guard with the chance of being great very soon.

How many NBA players aren't conceited? For that matter, how many professional athletes aren't conceited? This doesn't matter to me. What matters is that he works hard on both offense and defense, and he is coachable. He isn't a chest thumper and a hot dog, and he doesn't get into trouble off the court. His demeanor on the floor is great. In my opinion, he doesn't get enough press, but that may be because he can be a little inconsistent at times. Tony Parker is one of the best PGs right now, and I think when all is said and done, he may end up being one of the best statistically. After this year's playoffs, Tony Parker may be 23 and have two championship rings. How many players that have played in the NBA can say that?

Focus. Consistency. Perimeter shooting. The lack of those things is what drives many fans nuts.
His potential is huge. If he ever successfully conquers those three areas, he'll be great.

There will always be haters
end of study
Excellent conclusion. Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one.
Tony seems like an ok guy to me. I think quiet and reserved guys are often confused as conceited. I can see his teammates love him so this must mean he's a good guy. There will always be haters in every sport, in every country.
No offense, but your "study" seems like a waste of time, you won't find any "special reason" why Tony is hated/loved. Its the same thing for all athletes all over the world. Your "study" could be interesting if you generalize it for all athletes.
tp owns, rocks, sexy 4 woman, and good looking for gay guys. End of story.
