Actually, didn't Hill literally stink it up in Summer League play? I'm not just talking about playing poorly, but playing so bad that EVERYONE was second-guessing the pick over Chalmers and CDR even more than they were on draft night? Am I remembering this whole thing wrong?

Hill did poorly in his first summer league, and there have been quite a few summer league wonders who did nothing in the regular season.

No, I wasn't remembering it wrong. Hill had a HISTORICALLY bad summer league that I'm sure he would wish that nobody ever reminded him of.
In 3 games - he averaged 31.7 minutes per game, averaged 8 PPG, shot 2-25 (.080%), 1-6 from 3 pt. range, grabbed 7 RPG, dished out 3 dimes per, had 1 steal and no blocks. He also averaged 4.66 fouls per game.
To be honest, you mentioning George Hill when speaking of the validity of play in the Summer League disproved your whole argument. Damion James may end up being a great player, but I personally wouldn't put too much stock in his stats during Summer League.

Actually, Hill played well but he didn't shoot well. Many people seemed to forget that he was at the top of the nation in scoring and thought it was some indication that he'd suddenly forgotten how to shoot. Hill was able to get to the rim, handled the ball and defended well.

Hill rebounded well, but that was about it. He looked very uncomfortable out there and I remember many people using your argument of being at the top of the nation in scoring only to be ridiculed with the opposition stating that he did so playing at a small school against inferior talent (and then to further use his poor play in the Summer League to back up their arguments). Honestly though, shooting 2-25 against Summer League players is much worse than "he didn't shoot well". He was HORRIBLE. Don't get me wrong though, because I am glad that he overcame that horrendous showing and display that the Spurs' FO knew what they were doing when they drafted the player from IUPUI. He is now one of my favorite players in the league.

He likely won't, but the last actual report that I saw was McDonald stating that he was "iffy" due to hamstring issues.

You say you're a huge Spurs fan and you have no idea what George did in his first Summer League. 2008 was George Hill's first Summer League and he was horrible, maybe one of the worst performing players there. 2009 was his second time there and he was a lot better, maybe the best player there for that one. Either way SL isn't the best indicator of how someone will do in the NBA as George was better in his first NBA game that he was in any SL game.

This is what you all are talking about.
It has been the best line of summer league. Maurice Cheeks has used it. P.J. Carlesimo has used it. Every journalist here, practically, has quoted it.
It's a story about how great players can have terrible games in their first summer league. And the story is that Greg Ostertag killed Tim Duncan in his first summer league appearance.
I linked to such a quote, from Cheeks, the other day, and enterprising TrueHoop reader Cyn spent a day at the library going through old newspaper stories proving Cheeks wrong.
Cyn writes:
As for Ostertag 'killing' TD ... that's a matter of opinion.
Certainly the Utah team killed the combined summer league team of the Spurs and 76ers, as the final score was Jazz 85 and Spurs/76ers 59. Ouch.
Ostertag was a second year player. The article describes Ostertag as going up to slam a dunk on Duncan, but he hit the back rim instead.
Ostertag did block some of Tim's shots. The article doesn't specify how many but Ostertag had six blocks in the game.
Anyway, here are the boxscore lines from both players:
Tim Duncan 14 points/6 of 10 FG/8 rebs/3 assists/2 blocks
Greg Ostertag 21 points/7 of 12 FG/10 rebs/0 assists/5 blocks
Tim fouled out of the game getting his sixth foul at 2:52 of the fourth quarter. Maurice Cheeks got the game wrong (fifth not first) and while 'killed' might be harsh; Ostertag did get the better of Tim.
I appreciate the legwork, Cyn.
This story has been used to laugh off performances like Kevin Durant's 4 for 19 in his second game. I'm not worried about Kevin Durant's future. But I am worried about using a tale of a player who shot 60% from the floor to explain a player who shot 21%.
UPDATE: Tim Duncan spoke about that experience with Slam's Lang Whitaker: "Jermaine (O'Neal) destroyed me. He was with Portland, was real young ... and Tag threw my stuff into the first couple of rows a few times."

You're probably going to need to go back and look at the game logs. Hill was able to get to the rim and wasn't able to score. People were freaking out because they said he needed to develop a finishing move against shot blockers, when all he really needed to learn how to do was draw a foul instead of avoiding contact.
Those of us that said he was a good scorer and it didn't matter if the ball wasn't going in the hole so long as he was learning his new position and showing confidence were right, so I'm not sure how much ridicule there could be.

I was at that Utah summer league game and had a front row seat. Duncan looked like he'd be a great player but he was in foul trouble, which explains why he didn't score as many as Tag. But everyone could see Duncan with a few games under his belt would be a beast.

Honestly it's not that big of a deal and I'm glad that it turned out that the doubters (however many there were) appear to be wrong since George Hill has turned out to be the better player (compared to Chalmers and CDR). Being a good scorer in college doesn't always translate to being a good scorer in the NBA (in fact, there are many occasions where it doesn't). I remember pages and pages in various threads here on SpursTalk about how Hill was the wrong choice based on his Summer League play - but there were posters on the opposition saying to be patient and that saw the good qualities in the young guard.
Regardless, are we in agreement with debunking the premise of the thread in that good Summer League play doesn't necessarily mean that the player will be successful in the NBA (especially when you are basing your opinion off of the first few minutes of that players very first Summer League game)?

hill was so terrible in summer league we had pop already having to talk to him about getting his confidence back.
parker was the one who had a solid summer league.
anderson may very well not play in the summer league as buford has indicated the #1 priority is getting his hamstring right.
