ok so first off, they released the NBA cap, which turned out to be $2 million more than what was speculated; Spurs were clearly waiting all along for this official number (and I'm sure Splitter's agent was as well) to know what they had "to play with" financially.

On top of needing to know their financial situation, they also wanted Bonner to agree to their agreed upon amount in order to have a full/stable offer to Splitter.

The reason it is an agreement versus signing probably has to do with Splitter not physically being in San Antonio (I'd imaging the organization wants to throw a press conference with him when he gets in town...so scheduling blah blah blah).

Splitter signed (5M?), Bonner re signed (3.2M).....

hm....

assuming that Blair will be more than just the 5th big in the rotation, Spurs would pay a hell lot of money for whoever else this 5th big is.

can anyone else see a Dice trade on the horizon?
I mean, he is also the only trade asset Spurs have outside the core players, who can bring back a MLE size salary.
in case of a Dice trade, the Bonner re signing immediately makes much more sense.

Splitter signed (5M?), Bonner re signed (3.2M).....

hm....

assuming that Blair will be more than just the 5th big in the rotation, Spurs would pay a hell lot of money for whoever else this 5th big is.

can anyone else see a Dice trade on the horizon?
I mean, he is also the only trade asset Spurs have outside the core players, who can bring back a MLE size salary.
in case of a Dice trade, the Bonner re signing immediately makes much more sense.

that would be a huge mistake. Dice is the most consistent outside shooting bigman we got!

Now 2 moves remined.

- Sign with Jefferson to a lower contract, not more than 4 years 32M.
- Sign with Shaq for MLE.

I hope they have a lot more planned than that. Bringing in a 38 year old has-been with health issues and bringing back a failed experiment with RJ - we KNOW he doesn't work here - is pitiful. The rest of the good teams keep getting better....we keep re-signing matt fucking bonner. The splitter thing? What a joke...he's NOT going to save us.

Nobody is acting like he's the 2nd coming of Duncan. But he's the best player we could have acquired this year. He will help us in the paint, which is where we were weakest last year. Anytime my team acquires a good player, I'm happy about it.

Also I think 6 and 4 is very conservative.

Ticket 760 has learned that the San Antonio Spurs have reached a contract agreement with Tiago Splitter. He is expected to sign the deal on Monday. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Matt Bonner has also agreed to a 4-yr extension with San Antonio. He is also expected to sign his deal on Monday. Terms of Bonner's deal have not been disclose, but the Concord Union Leader reports that it should pay him annually more than the $3.2 million he earned least season.

firstly, with 2 more mils. added to the salary cap, we can sign bonner as a 5th man. do not tell me we could have gotten a better 5th man. he prob. would not be signed if the cap had been lower.

moreover, rj signing is a decent one - not great, but decent. look at how much ppl pay for quality/below-par SF on the market - rudy gay 80 mil, durant 80ish mil, etc. he has plenty of experience and he may have had a bad season last year. heck, in 09, he averaged 39% from 3. last year, he only got 33%. hopefully both rj and tony bounce back from bad years and we are all healthy.

I wouldn't be shocked if McDyess is gone.

Pop is going to be playing mad scientist with five legit rotation bigs. It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Bonner is the worst of the bunch, but he possesses one thing that the other four don't and that one thing is a thing the Spurs are both lacking and value greatly, so he's going to play.

He's not going to just play 10 mpg as the fifth big and not play some games. I can't imagine him at his peak going from a 20 mpg third big accepting being a fifth big and given that he's signed for 4 years and I'm guessing $15 or 16 million, presumably the Spurs didn't pay him that to be a fifth big.

I know McDyess is retiring after next season, but still. I've got to believe Bonner would not have signed if he were going to be out of the rotation more often than not for a year.

If they do trade McDyess, my guess would be they'd receive a combo forward in return. No one springs to mind immediately though.

Report: Tiago Splitter finally coming to the NBA, agrees to terms with Spurs
Fri Jul 09,2010 6:45 PM ET By Rob Mahoney
Tiago Splitter may not be but a blip on the average NBA fan's radar, but he's about to step into one of the finest organizations in the sport with the potential to make a huge impact. After much delay, Splitter will finally join the Spurs, according to a report by The Ticket 760 in San Antonio, giving Tim Duncan a proper big man running mate for the first time in a long while.

Even if Splitter doesn't quite make headlines in the LeBron aftermath, this is a huge signing for the Spurs. Antonio McDyess' season wasn't all that productive, and as impressive as DeJuan Blair may be, he was never the ideal candidate for a full-time gig at Duncan's side. Tiago's perfect for the job, and so much a stylistic fit for the Spurs that it's sickening.

Splitter's signing may not be earth-shaking, but it does have legitimate implications for the rest of the conference. Maybe the rest of the West's second-tier teams won't be goaded into making reactionary moves in the coming days, but the stability and depth the Spurs just picked up mandates their inclusion in any NBA outlook. Gregg Popovich's big three may have one more run in them yet, and with Splitter, Blair, an emerging George Hill, and possibly another acquisition in tow, San Antonio has quietly created a team reminiscent of their title-winning roots.

Though terms of Splitter’s NBA deal may be near completion, there remains one significant hurdle to clear before a deal to bring the 6-foot-11 Brazilian center to San Antonio can be finalized.

The Spurs must first negotiate a buyout of Splitter’s contract with Caja Laboral, Splitter’s Spanish League club, a caveat that could hold up an announcement. There are signs a deal could be completed early next week, and there are reasons for both the Spurs and Splitter to want to get something done quickly.

Splitter has until June 15 to opt out of his deal with Caja Laboral, or else he remains committed to that team for two more seasons.

Uh, I thought Splitter didn't have a buyout this year if he went to an NBA team. At most, I thought it was a small set amount. WTF?

See, this is why you don't celebrate Splitter coming until the ink is dry :pctoss

I'll try to look it up, but I think the buyout was merely a formality. Sure, it could take a day or two to clear with the Spanish league and what not, but I don't think it's going to be a problem if Splitter wants to come over.

If Splitter buyout works like the other European buyouts, the buyout number is fixed and Caja Laboral can't keep him if the buyout is paid. There can always have some negotiations to lower the buyout.

Caja Laboral is a small team that made some of its money from selling its players. This summer they sold Prigioni and Vidal to Madrid. Getting the most money with Splitter is maybe more important than not seeing with a rival.

You can imagine a scenario like:
Splitter buyout for the NBA is €1M and is €5M for Europe.
Spurs made an offer to Splitter and so does a top team in Europe.
Splitter then said to Caja Laboral: "Either I go to the NBA and you get €1M or you accept to lower the buyout to another European team at €3M, I sign with them and you get €3M"
IMO, Caja Laboral will make the money choice.

Even if in his contract Splitter's buyout for Europe is ten times higher than for the NBA, it doesn't really matter.

I think Splitter and Parker are going to gave a dynamite pick and roll.

I am so grossed out with this off season. Bonner + RJ = Massive Fail. Even with Tiago (which is the only shred of good news), this team has not done anything to really help themselves as things stand.

Same bad fits & playoff chokers on the roster.

You said it dude.

We are a joke now, I don't see how Parker and Duncan even truly try this regular season with all their hearts....when they know theres no chance we are championship contenders. No chance at all.

From this (http://www.noticiasdealava.com/2010/02/23/baskonia/el-madrid-abre-la-puja-por-splitter) spanish article about the Madrid interest on Splitter:

Aunque el capitán azulgrana finaliza su vinculación en 2012, su contrato establece una cláusula de salida especial al finalizar la presente campaña. Si el destino es la NBA, la cantidad a pagar ronda el millón de dólares. Si no se mueve del viejo continente, esa cifra se eleva a cotas mucho más altas.

English:

Even though the red-and-blue captain tie with the team ends in 2012, his contract establishes a special exit clause at the end of this season. If the destination is the NBA, the amount to pay is about $1 million dollars. If he doesn't move from Europe, that number can elevate much more.

The trick here is that I think the Spurs can only offer to pay $500K (correct me if I'm wrong), so the rest has to come from Splitter's pocket. Doesn't look like an insurmountable amount.

million bucks? pfft.

Nothing.

Spurs pay 500 grand Splitter ponys up the rest, not too bad since he will make 6 mill this upcoming season.

Sell Splitter to sponsors and get him some commercials and make up the 500 grand that way.

Retarded NBA rules only allowing up to 500 grand.

Buyout expected to be between $1 million and $1.2 million. Let's hope there's no magical "$13 million buyout" like there was with Scola.

Which is what the Rockets did with Scola. I recall Yao getting him a shoe sponsorship to make up the difference.

We don't have the individual talent of the Lakers, Miami, probably Boston, orthe athleticism of the younger teams... there is only one way we can ever hope to be real contenders again:

1) Be the most efficient, sharp, ball moving offense
2) Assasins behind the 3 point line
3) And a DISCIPLINED DEFENSIVE MACHINE.

That's the only way Pop knows how to win titles.

Pop has the know-how. Does he have the right guys to do it?

I think our offense will be good enough to compete against anyone, we can score 100 on anyone. But can we make stops?

And who are our 3 point bombers off the bench? And you don't need the best athletes to be the best defensive team, but they have to be sharp and disciplined. Do we have guys that can do that? Enough of them?

I don't think we are a joke :lol. I just don't see any moves (as things stand) that really give the Spurs a legit shot.

I am just upset that if the Spurs aren't winning now realistically that they are investing somewhat long-term in guys like Bonner and RJ.

Spurs are still going to be a damn good team and imo getting Tiago helps out a lot from last year. Hopefully Anderson can have a role as well.

But if the goal is to win a title, we are still no close to LA. But there is a lot of time left.

Homey if you talk to anyone without a Spurs-bias (and we all have spurs bias to one extent or another) one of the biggest knocks on our team was our blind faith to playing Matt Bonner. He goes and indisputably proves he is a playoff choker and we are about to re-sign him for four fucking years and more money than he already made.

It's the biggest contract abortion of a FO move by this team I've seen since I've been following this team very closely.

If we give him that kinda money, it prob means we get rid of people that actually contribute like Dice, someone I would not mind see retiring as a Spur. You, me, everyone on this board except fuckin TPark KNOWS that we have no chance at accomplishing anything of note with Matt Bonner earning minutes as the big man stretching the floor.

No. Chance. You know its true.

Ehhh. Depends on who else is here. If the Spurs would have gotten a better fit at SF I think they could survive Bonner. But I do agree that Bonner is not a championship role player. Ok in the season of regs, but not in the money time.

From the salary cap FAQ by Larry Coon:
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q65

65. How about signing bonuses? Are they allowed? How do they count against the cap?

Payments in excess of $500,000 that are made to non-NBA teams or federations to release rights to a player. Note: It is a common misconception that teams cannot pay more than $500,000 to release a foreign player. They can, but any amount above $500,000 is applied to the team's cap.

Does this mean that if the Spurs pay the full $1M buyout, the extra $500K gets charged to the MLE? Or the LLE? He says against the team's cap, but if the Spurs are over the cap, how does that work?

This means that the full MLE couldn't be all for Splitter's salary, then, which would cause the raises to be slightly smaller?

Also makes it less likely that there will be any of the MLE left once Splitter signs.
