I would say you missed alot. "Do as I say not as I do" It gets tiresome with this administration. It does cost more to travel overseas. America is hurting money wise. And yes we should not have to pay for the Obongos to fat cat around the globe becasue she wants to help a friend grieve.
so basically while a president is in office, you are saying he/she and his/her family should never take a vacation?

Not so fast. "They" may be coming. And when "they" do come, it is going to be bad. It is going to be real bad.

If the first couple really cared about this nation, they wouldn't have it spend so much over them.
And disagreements?
How much extra does it cost the taxpayer for an overseas vacation opposed to one here? Assuming that the Secret Service detail complement is the same, the only big difference would be the cost of the plane flight. (And considering she wouldve taken a plane to vacation in the US, it's merely a matter of how much more gas it took to get her over to Europe.)
I'm guessing the sum isn't greatly different than what a vacation in the US might be, perhaps a few ten thousands more for the flight.

Some of you really are misinformed here…Have any of you ever seen an action film to get an idea of what it takes to insure safe travel for the President & 1st lady? The military, CIA, FBI & local police are all involved…Entire cities are placed on red alert…
Have any of you ever watched the news to see the tremendous security efforts when Michelle Obama travels in just the U.S.? There are secret service men with sniper rifles placed on roof tops…The state police have to coordinate efforts with local police & sheriffs...And were just talking a visit to Sea World here…
When the 1st Lady went to Spain the CIA closed beaches & had to fly in security vehicles, coordinate emergency efforts with the Navy, along with Fighter jets, helicopters, to be within striking distance in case of an emergency…

not to mention she's safer outside the US.

Blake Has the 1st Lady ever visited your work? Has a President of the U.S. ever visited your work? Maybe this is a good time to just be a good listener…:lol
I don’t care what her trip costs…Just don't say that there is no extra expense to travel abroad…

What does the FLOTUS or the POTUS visiting me at work have to do with anything at all?
I don’t care what her trip costs…Just don't say that there is no extra expense to travel abroad…
I won't say that and I haven't said that. I don't see where anyone else has said that there is no extra expense to travel abroad.
Maybe this is a good time to be a good reader.
The question was "how much extra does it cost......?"

I also should add that I was not aware that there were so many 7 foot tall Secret servicemen…They never showed that in the action films I have seen…

I wasn't aware of that either.
What action films have you seen that make reference to the extra travel costs for the P/FLOTUS to travel abroad?

That's not true.
Most of the time president Bush (43) or president Reagan took vacation, they went to their own homes. I don't know how Bush (41) did his vacations. i forget. Anyway, security is already in place at these residences 24/7. The added cots to taxpayers on a daily basis isn't significant. When you shut down hotel floors, having to buy all the rooms, for how long... That gets expensive.

Well, I imagine that whenever a first lady travels, the Secret Service has to take precautionary measures. I don't think the first lady gets to decide how many security agents accompany her. I'm also fairly certain that other first ladies have taken vacation and had to have security accompany them when they did, whether it is here is the US or abroad. Are you all alleging that Michelle Obama demands greater security than the others? Or that she's had more hotel stays than than the others, whether here or abroad?

non-issue noise is what right-wingers and hate-media excel in. It's all a distraction from real problems, for which they offer no solutions.
Demagoguing to rouse the rabble, which is their ignorant base of losers.

Aren't Secret Service members on salary though, being government employees? It's not like they don't get paid if they're not used, correct?
And considering that Michelle paid for all the rooms (assuming the article is correct) then that isn't a factor.

Right... but all the people you mentioned are on salary, correct? So they're either working doing this or working doing something else.
And if they shut down cities no matter where the Obamas go, I don't see how that answers your bolded question, which is how much it would cost to vacation overseas vs America.

lngr, I imagine they get paid extra. They have to hve a type of tdy and per diem. So I don't think it is exactly the same pay.

salary? I don't know. Still, if they go away from home, I'm all but certain they get paid more. Doesn't that stand to reason?
I used to have a job that I was paid $21.60/hr. in the early 90's. If I was on standby, to be called at a moments notice, I got paid an $5.00 per hour just to sit at home and do anything, but I couldn't get intoxicated. If I was away for business.... I was paid something like $38 per hour for a minimum 8 worked, plus the $5 per hour for hours not worked, plus per-diem.
And considering that Michelle paid for all the rooms (assuming the article is correct) then that isn't a factor.
If she paid for all the rooms, I don't have a problem in that aspect. I stated this before. I still think the first family is taking more vacations than they should for the state of the economy, and compared to how other presidents took their vacations. Doesn't it stand to reason that they should be considerate of tax dollar expenditures that they have control over?

At least $40,000 per day more. I know, not a whole lot compared to government spending, but it's the principle.

I agree, and for vacations I have no problem if the Obama's pay what it would cost for a plane ticket and rooms, etc.
My problem is the frequency of vacations, and in this economy. Shouldn't they set an example if they wish to be seen as leaders?

.....We checked with the White House for a price breakdown of the trip, looking for a smoking gun. And honestly, there isn’t one. The bulk of the trip—the hotel stay and all meals—were paid for by the Obamas and their close friends who joined them. “Any additional footprint,” says a White House aide, “including additional rooms needed for security support, falls under the same rules as have applied to any previous first-family travel: the costs are split appropriately, with private expenses paid for privately; government expenses are paid for by the government.”..........
